ZERO HEDGE
ECONOMICS

There’s a lot to be worried about going into 2017 both in terms of financial markets and in terms of geopolitical concerns. See the graph below

First, as Goldman warns, while investors have been focusing on the prospect of a lower statutory corporate tax rate, the firm's US economist Alec Phillips notes that it will likely come with provisions that will offset much of the benefit of a lower rate. For instance, under the House Republican plan, several corporate tax incentives, such as the interest expense deduction, would be repealed. Furthermore, the plan proposes a redefinition of foreign and domestic income based on where sales, rather than production, occurs. Furthermore, under Mr. Trump’s plan, the deficit as a percentage of GDP  would jump from 3.2% in 2016 to 5.0% in 2017 and 6.1% in 2018. The annual deficit will rise from a projected $590 billion in 2016 to $960 billion in 2017 and $1.2 trillion in 2018.

Second, another key risk of President-elect Trump’s proposed economic policies is higher inflation. Realized measures of inflation have steadily risen in recent months. Core CPI now stands at 2.2% while  core PCE, the Fed’s preferred inflation metric, has risen to 1.7% from 1.3% last year (see Exhibit 24). At the same time, reduced labor market slack has supported wage growth and our GS Wage Tracker stands at 2.6%, its highest level post-crisis (see Exhibit 25).

HERE THE CONCLUSION SUMMARY:  Open the web above to read its explanation
While Donald Trump and Brexit shocked the market (and the world) in 2016 (albeit briefly), Bloomberg's John Fraher, Flavia Krause-Jackson and Mira Rojanasakul turn their attention to the unthinkables in 2017 in 9 worst case scenarios:

  1. Trumplandia
  2. Yalta 2.0
  3. China and America Go to Economic War
  4. Kim Trumps Trump
  5. Heads Roll in Europe
  6. Internet of (Bad) Things
  7. Cuba—Back in the U.S.S.R.
  8. Mexico Meltdown
  9. Saudi Arabia’s Golden Boy is Sidelined

From social breakdown in the U.S. to a nuclear crisis in North Korea to the defeat of Angela Merkel in Germany, the potential for chaos is just as great in 2017.

These aren’t predictions. But they show what your social-media news feed could look like if things go wrong.

The U.S. monthly international trade deficit increased in October 2016 according to the U.S. Census Bureau, rising from $36.2 billion in September (revised lower from $36.4 billion) to $42.6 billion in October, higher than the $41.8BN consensus estimate, as exports decreased and imports increased which was to be expected following the recent surge in the US Dollar.

US Productivity rose a disappointing 3.1% in Q3 (missing expectations of a 3.3% rise). However, on a year-over-year basis, Q3 saw a second consecutive decline - the first two-quarter decline in US productivity since 1993. Unit labor cost growth slowed in Q3 to 3.00% (with QoQ growth tumbling from 6.2% in Q2 to just 0.7% in Q3).

POLITICS

The Michigan Republican Party filed emergency motions with the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals early on Tuesday, seeking a stay of a federal judge's order that started a statewide presidential recount in Michigan on Monday, even as another potentially "dealbreaking" snag has emerged to Jill Stein's recount effort.

President-elect Trump's choice of Gen. James Mattis to be Defense Secretary has raised more than a few eyebrows. Not only as a military officer in a traditionally civilian position, but also as an executive in a leading defense contractor. His views on Iran are also considered extreme and not grounded in reality. Ron Paul asks "Will the mad dog be leashed?" in the following live discussion...

Just a day after a Texas Republican "faithless elector" explained why he will not cast his vote for Donald Trump, The Denver Post reports two Democratic Colorado electors are filing suit challenging a state law requiring them to vote for the winner of the state’s popular vote. WORLD ISSUES and ME

Accusations and allegations that the Turkish government - and, specifically,  members of Erdogan's family- has an active role in the oil smuggling from areas that are controlled by the “Islamic State”, were some of the most important subjects that were breached but never confirmed in 2015. Today, the leaking of all the emails from the Turkish energy minister by Wikileaks confirms these allegations.

NATO is on a war footing, and has made it clear that «nuclear weapons are a core component of the Alliance’s overall capabilities». The Belgian F-16 deployments, deliberately and provocatively in a most sensitive area on Russia’s borders, have been authorised and greeted with approval by western governments whose citizens have little understanding that the west’s policy of confrontation is increasing tension day by day.

Russia, along with Iran, could turn into the big winner of the agreement, enjoying high output and higher prices, which would allow it to further expand its global market share. Unless, of course, OPEC lies, as former Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi plainly said this week. “Unfortunately,” he said, “we tend to cheat,” commenting on how OPEC handles its only tool of market rebalancing: production cuts.

WASHINGTON BLOG

The terms gaslight and gaslighting are entering the political media lexicon, with partisans of both parties accusing the other side’s candidate of gaslighting in the presidential election. The terms refers to the 1944 film Gaslight in which Charles Boyer subtly manipulates the environment to cause Ingrid Bergman to question her memory and sanity.

Generally speaking, gaslighting has been used in the context of personal relationships to describe a manipulative person’s attempts to undermine and control their romantic partner.

As I understand it, gaslighting refers to a specific set of manipulative techniques:

1. Questioning, belittling, discounting and undermining our experience of places and events.
2. Overwriting our memory of events with false memories, again by undermining, questioning and belittling our memories.
3. Discrediting and marginalizing our definitions of self and identity, in favor of the manipulator’s definition of our identity and place in the world.
4. Using authority and “experts” to disqualify and discredit dissenting views.
5. Denigrate and deny our lived experience and memory by repeating the institutionalized authority-approved narrative of “what actually happened.”
6. Disorient, discredit and destroy dissent with a torrent of false statistics, false narratives, false accusations and false claims of our errors.
Correspondent C.D. suggests gaslighting can be applied to the entire financial system. Here are his comments in reference to last week’s post Beyond Income Inequality:
