The big Ice Age call was that the tight positive correlation between equity yields and bond yields that market participants had enjoyed since 1982, driven by ever-lower inflation, would break down. The "long bull market" (see chart below) had been a mirror image of the 1965- 1982 period when yields on both assets had risen together. The Ice Age thesis, predicted that while interest rates and bond yields would continue to fall, equity yields would decouple and begin to rise on a secular basis. For those with a historical perspective the Ice Age would be a mirror image of the 1950-65 period, which had been dubbed in the 1950s "the culting of the equity market" - a term popularised by George Ross-Goobey - link.

In the Ice Age, government bonds would rerate relative to equities, with the latter declining in absolute as well as relative terms.

One important implication of the Ice Age thesis was that widely used metrics from the 1980s and 90s, such as the bond/equity earnings yield ratio, would break down. Hence you should no longer buy equities when this ratio fell to 0.8 as they would be undergoing a secular de-rating.

"The level of complacency about where markets are today is pretty scary,” the TPG co-CEO said Wednesday. “People are just sort of assuming it’s OK, that it is what it is, and I have to say that I’m a little bit concerned about it."

Goldman pointed out recently, the very reason why volatility is so low - the biggest red flag for many of the abovementioned billionaires - is because turnover at hedge funds has collapsed to record lows.

If the gentlemen above want to see higher volatility, and see their warnings realized, the solution is simple: all they have to do is sell.

In the latest red flag for the US economy, moments ago the Fed reported that consumer credit for the month of April rose a paltry $8.2 billion, barely half the consensus estimate of $15.5 billion, and 40% of march's $19.5 billion. This was the lowest monthly increase in consumer credit going back nearly 6 years to August 2011.

Fracking was only the beginning. What comes next is an extraction coup of gigantic  proportions...

Just when you thought there couldn’t be any more oil in TEXAS … new technology is about to unlock an extremely shallow field that is brimming with heavy oil that has been impossible to recover--until now.

Many oil companies have spent many millions of dollars trying to unlock this gem, but expensive steam injections weren’t efficient enough to make it competitive or economic, even if they had succeeded.

While steam injections cost $50 per barrel, the new technology lifts the oil at under $10 per barrel—an astounding savings, even if oil prices crashed to lows not seen since the late 90s.

This dramatically reduced cost of extraction should send the Saudis back to the OPEC negotiating table in a panic.

But this is the story of Petroteq Energy - a small company with huge ambitions to become a driving force of a brand new chapter in the American oil revolution ...

The Field of Dreams
The Texas Permian Basin has been producing oil for almost 100 years, but geological assessments show that even though billions of barrels have already come out of this sleeping giant, billions more are still waiting to be pumped.

Texas: The Oil Giant that Never Sleeps
Nothing is inaccessible anymore. We proved that with shale, but that was only the first step in a momentous journey.
Fracking was only the beginning. What comes next is an extraction coup of gigantic proportions.

Update: the bill has passed, Bloomberg reports:

TURKEY APPROVES BILL ALLOWING TRAINING TO QATAR SECURITY FORCES
[[ So: Qatar won’t be invaded by Saudi’ friends, including US?. .]]

Turkey's parliament will fast-track a bill on Wednesday allowing its troops to be deployed to a Turkish military base in Qatar, officials from the ruling AK Party and the nationalist opposition said, according to Reuters.

In the ongoing diplomatic crisis between Qatar and its Gulf/Arab peers, which is either the result of Saudi nat gas envy or - for those who watch CNN - Russian hacking, Turkey has emerged as a vocal  supporter of the small but wealthy state.  On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Erdogan defended Qatar, saying:

"Let me say at the outset that we do not think the sanctions against Qatar are good," Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara."Turkey will continue and will develop our ties with Qatar, as with all our friends who have supported us in the most difficult moments,"

Turkey's support for Qatar also has ideological reasons as in the past both both have provided support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and backed rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Erdogan was careful not to criticise Riyadh, calling on the member nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council to "resolve their differences through dialogue".

"Efforts to isolate Qatar ... will not solve any problem," said Erdogan, praising Doha's "cool-headedness" and "constructive approach".

As we reported last night, speaking to Al Jazeera, analyst Giorgio Cafiero of Gulf State Analytics, a geopolitical risk consultancy based in Washington, DC, said: "I think the Kuwaitis as well as Omanis ... fear the prospects of these tensions escalating in ways which could undermine the interest of all six members of the GCC: Gulf Cooperation Council

"There are many analysts who believe that a potential break-up of the GCC has to be considered right now. If these countries fail to resolve their issues and such tensions reaches new heights, we have to be very open to the possibility of these six Arab countries no longer being able to unite under the banner of one council," said Cafiero.

He added that if tension escalates, some have warned of a "military confrontation"

Trump 'Impeachable' if Comey Fired to Stop Russia Probe - US Lawmaker  https://sputniknews.com/us/201706011054206986-us-trump-comey-impeachable/

President Donald Trump committed an impeachable offense if the ex-FBI Director James Comey not easing off the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

US Congressman Jerry Nadler of New York said in an interview on Thursday:

"If the president fired Comey because he asked for loyalty and hadn’t gotten it, because he had asked him to ease off on the investigation of [Michael] Flynn — because in effect he was asking him to ease off the investigation of possible collusion by the Trump campaign with the Russians in subverting the election — that would be obstruction of justice which is an impeachable offense," Nadler stated in an interview with CNN.

South Korea Calls for THAAD to Be Put on Hold for ‘Environmental Assessment  https://sputniknews.com/asia/201706071054417121-moon-calls-for-thaad-suspension/

On Wednesday the office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in announced that further deployment of the US’ controversial Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD) could be suspended for more than a year pending an environmental impact assessment, a proposition that could strain Seoul’s longstanding relationship with Washington.

In an overnight effort some say was deliberately timed to precede Moon’s predicted win in the country’s elections May 9, THAAD’s radar and launchers were hurriedly deployed at its site in Senjou county in late April.

A new environmental assessment may delay or even suspend the deployment of THAAD in South Korea for as long as a year.

"The order to conduct an environmental impact assessment is a guideline to enhance the procedural legitimacy of the deployment, so the defense ministry will review ways to conduct such a study," South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo said, as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

US Senator Dick Durbin (D-Il) is defending the US’ deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD) in South Korea, saying that Washington was transparent with the Seoul government, which has launched a probe into the addition of four launchers to the system without the knowledge of the country’s president.

Since the US and South Korea reached a joint decision in July to deploy the anti-ballistic missile defense system, it has been a source of controversy. Residents have protested its impact on the environment; China is said to suspect that its radar could be used to spy on Beijing’s military activities, straining relations with Seoul; and US President Donald Trump has urged that Washington and Seoul share the cost of installing and operating THAAD.

Rand Corporation senior defense analyst Bruce Bennett said, "The problem is that given the range of the interceptors with THAAD, you really need at least two and probably three or four THAAD batteries in South Korea in order to defend the whole country."

European Defense: US Will Prevent Germany From Seeking Regional Hegemony    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201706071054401585-us-germany-european-defense/

The EU has unveiled an unprecedented plan for common defense spending to help Europe stand alone as a global military power. Sputnik Radio discussed the issue with Federico Petroni, Contributing Editor at Limes Magazine and Co-founder of the iMerica website, who explained why the US and UK won't favor the idea.

What is not commonly understood, he further said, is that the EU’s ambitions in the defense area rely on Berlin's desire to consolidate an exclusive sphere of influence inside the continent and among like-minded countries. In fact, Germany is trying to project itself as an anchor army of Europe, he said. It is doing so by strengthening ties in the military sphere with the armies of the Netherlands, Romania, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Norway and other like-minded countries.

However this initiative won't resonate well in the so-called Anglosphere: principally the US and the UK, he said.

"The US will also intervene to avoid any attempt by Germany to consolidate an exclusive sphere of influence inside Europe. In fact, this is what the American geopolitics is all about: avoiding the birth of a regional hegemonic power inside the continent. That is what the World War I and World War II and the Cold War were fought for. And this is what the current tension in Eastern Europe is all about," Federico Petroni concluded.
