For the first time since September 2001, Robert Shiller's CAPE Ratio measure of stock market
valuation has topped 30x... (...and yes, we know, we "don't get it" and "this time is

In the history of the stock
market, it has only traded at a richer valuation during one period - June 1997 to September 2001 - as the dotcom farce
blew and burst.
And the market has only been this 'euphoric' once...

Obviously, such a mad system can’t go on forever,...
…
A curious fellow may look around
and find more questions than answers. Where is the money coming
from? Where is it going?
Before he knows it, he’s gone down the rabbit hole where he
observes the darnedest things. He may even discover that the Federal
Reserve, with its fiat money, has created and perpetuated insane and
incomprehensible levels of debt. And that this, in turn, has blown
the economy up into a massive financial bubble.
Monetary Madness
Obviously, such a mad system
can’t go on forever. But it can go on much longer than any
honest person would dream possible. The experience since Tricky Dick
Nixon closed the gold window nearly 46-years ago bears this out.
Moreover, the experience over the last 8-years, attempting
to normalize from ZIRP and QE, confirms the unique ability for madness to
persist. In short, monetary policy has gone mad as a hatter.
Its reasons don’t rhyme and its
rhymes don’t reason.
Just this week for
instance, Fed Chair Janet Yellen raised the price of credit in the face of a
deflating economy. Doesn’t this go contrary to the Fed’s standard
operating procedures? Are they just providing cover for the next great
market bust?
Here is a brief excerpt from Wednesday’s FOMC
statement. The charade Yellen
and the Fed must play are straight out of Wonderland.
“The Committee continues to
expect that, with gradual adjustments in the stance of monetary policy,
economic activity will expand at a moderate pace, and labor market conditions
will strengthen somewhat further. Inflation on a 12-month basis is
expected to remain somewhat below 2 percent in the near term but to stabilize
around the Committee’s 2 percent objective over the medium term. Near
term risks to the economic outlook appear roughly balanced, but the Committee
is monitoring inflation developments closely.
“In view of realized and
expected labor market conditions and inflation, the Committee decided to raise
the target range for the federal funds rate to 1 to 1-1/4 percent. The
stance of monetary policy remains accommodative, thereby supporting some further
strengthening in labor market conditions and a sustained return to 2 percent
inflation.”
This is FOMC Jabberwocky at its
finest. Still, the Fed fails to mention one very critical piece of
nonsense. That is, if one runs fast enough one can sometimes catch the rabbit.
Bonus Chart – The FANG Craze
This chart was
recently shown at
Zerohedge. The correlation between central bank balance sheets
and the “FANG” stocks is not what is most interesting about it in our opinion –
rather it is the fact that the FANGs and the rest of the market are drifting
apart (the ratio of the cap-weighted vs. the equal-weighted SPX is actually
already a relative performance proxy). This correlates actually quite closely
with the slowdown in money supply growth shown above (Y-o-y TMS-2 growth hit an
interim peak in November 2016 and has been roughly cut in half since then). Similar behavior
could be observed close to nearly every major market peak (“close” is a
relative term though – it is not possible to determine
a priori how long such a divergence will persist. We plan to discuss
this shortly in a separate post).

In every
state, rich or poor, high-tax or low-tax, the federal government is
getting the lion's share of taxes wrung from the pockets of the taxpayers.
But, most of that ends up being spent in the states, anyway. So, an obvious
question presents itself: why send all that money
to Washington first? Why not just spend it where it originates?

US Air Force Hopes UK Firm Solves F-35A Oxygen Poisoning Dilemma https://sputniknews.com/military/201706191054779635-usaf-uk-firm-f35-hypoxia/
The US
Air Force is testing a new high-tech sensor in a desperate effort to unveil the
“mosaic of events” causing episodes of hypoxia aboard Lockheed Martin F-35As
that forced the grounding of 55 jets at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona.
A flurry of hypoxia episodes reported between May and June
of this year caused the F-35A groundings at Luke AFB.

The
oxygenation problems in the fifth-generation F-35As that have caused the
grounding of 25 percent of all F-35s produced by Lockheed Martin date back six
years, the US Air Force has just admitted.
Since
2011, pilots have reported 15 F-35A “in-flight and ground physiological
events,” Air Force Capt. Mark Graff said in a statement Thursday.
"Physiological
events" is a bloodless euphemism for what can be a life-threatening
experience, according to F/A-18 Super Hornet pilots. A US Navy Super
Hornet pilot recalled what happened after an issue with his air flow
regulators in comments to the Navy Times: "That’s when I realize
my lips were tingling, my fingers are tingling, and I’m like 'Sh*t, man,
something’s wrong' … And the guy in back’s like, 'Hey, dude! My fingers
are blue!'"

Bad Air: US Navy’s T-45 Fleet Grounded as Breathless Pilots Go on Strike https://sputniknews.com/military/201704111052509450-US-navy-aircraft-fleet-grounded/
Citing an ongoing series of
near-asphyxiations in flight, US Naval Air Force pilots have thrown down the
gauntlet, saying they will not fly the T-45C Goshawk trainer aircraft until
life-threatening system logistics are repaired.
In a statement, Commander Jeannie Groeneveld, a
spokeswoman with the Naval Air Forces command, said that the ongoing
life-threatening problems with pilot cockpit air supply could be the
result of "multiple interrelated potential causal
factors."

DILEMMA Lockheed’s F-35 vs. Super Hornets
The F-35
is said to be the most expensive weapons system in history.
As a part of the Navy’s
Joint Strike Fighter program, the F-35Cs would replace the popular-but-aging
fleet of Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets, carrying with it a cost
of roughly $400 billion, a figure that drew criticism
from Trump. [ [SO,

Previous
annual contracts ran about $102 million, but the last contract, signed
in February, came to $94.6 million, it’s lowest cost yet. Lockheed Martin
and the Pentagon are reportedly working to make costs even lower
than that, with plans to drop the number at least 16
percent, to less than $80 million.

The latest production –Hoernet- model
of F/A-18s improves upon previous versions of the F-18 in a
multitude of ways. The jets carry more fuel, a greater payload, and
feature new stealth sensors for China’s J-20 stealth fighter and Russia’s
PAK-FA.
The company is confident a
“general acceptance” exists among procurement officials to buy
several hundred Block III F/A-18 for carrier wings instead
of Lockheed’s F-35C, a Boeing vice president told the National Interest
on Tuesday.

US State Senator Wants to Visit Russia to Discuss Syria, NATO With Officials https://sputniknews.com/us/201706201054784415-state-senator-russia-visit-syria-nato/
US State
Senator from Virginia Richard Black said on Monday he would like to discuss
with Russian officials the Syrian crisis and the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO).
"I would love
to visit Russia and we actually had some plans about a year ago. I
would love to have an invitation to come to Russia, and if I
came to Russia I would want it to be a situation where I met
with political officials and something to make it worthwhile,"
Black said. "I would be most happy to come to Russia because I
honestly see Russia as a natural ally of the United States
of America."
"When the cold war ended
with the collapse of the Berlin… an agreement was arranged
upon that if the Soviet Union did not interfere with the
reunification of Germany, then NATO would not move one inch further
to the east," he noted. "However without scarcely any delay
we started marching NATO further and further to the east."

MP: Russia's Suspension of Cooperation With US in Syria Will Prevent New Attacks https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201706191054780031-russia-syria-us-prevention-strikes/
The United States and Russia
signed a MOU on the Prevention of Flight Safety Incidents
in Syrian airspace in October 2015. The
agreement was already suspended once this year, after US conducted missile
strikes on the Syrian Ash Sha'irat military airfield in the country's
Homs province in April.
On Sunday, a US-led coalition
downed a Syrian Su-22 aircraft, which was on a mission to target
Daesh (banned in Russia) terror organization near Raqqa. The coalition claimed the move was aimed at preventing
Syrian forces from attacking Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) positions
advancing on Daesh stronghold. The Russian Defense Ministry responded
by halting its cooperation with the United States stipulated
by the Memorandum of Understanding on flight safety
on Syrian airspace.
To my mind, the Russian
Defense Ministry’s actions, taken earlier in the day, will play the role
of a sort of signal and a sort of an action aimed
at preventing such incidents, as we understand that in this
case, the United States will understand that these types of actions may be
taken with regard to its armed forces," Shvytkin said, adding
the Washington should learn that its actions would not go unpunished.
A
Russian lawmaker said on Monday that the suspension of the memorandum of
understanding between Russia and the United States will help preventing such
incidents as an American attack against the Syrian aircraft.

Identifying the tell-tale signs
of Imperial decay and decline is a bit of a parlor game. The hubris
of an increasingly incestuous and out-of-touch leadership, dismaying extremes
of wealth inequality, self-serving, avaricious Elites, rising dependency of the
lower classes on free Bread and Circuses provided by a government careening
toward insolvency due to stagnating tax revenues and vast over-reach–these are
par for the course of self-reinforcing Imperial decay.
Sir John Glubb listed a few
others in his seminal essay on the end of empires The Fate of Empires, what might be
called the dynamics of decadence:
(a) A growing love of money as an end in itself.
(b) A lengthy period of wealth and ease, which makes people
complacent. They lose their edge; they forget the traits (confidence, energy,
hard work) that built their civilization.
(c) Selfishness and self-absorption.
(d) Loss of any sense of duty to the common good.
Glubb included the following in his list of the
characteristics of decadence:
— an increase in frivolity, hedonism, materialism and the
worship of unproductive celebrity (paging any Kardashians in the venue…)
— a loss of social cohesion
— willingness of an increasing number to live at the expense
of a bloated bureaucratic state
Historian Peter Turchin, whom I
have often excerpted here, listed three disintegrative forces that gnaw away
the fibers of an Imperial economy and social order:
