If Trump really wanted
to go after the banks, there’s a simple way he could do it...
It’s simple, in fact:
Reinstitute the Glass-Steagall Act. Let me
explain.
In 1933, when the
Glass-Steagall Act was passed, it helped break up the
biggest banks of the day and for good reason: they had had a major hand
in triggering the most disastrous economic depression our country ever
experienced.
The law split the
parts of banks that placed bets by creating and trading certain risky
securities and those that took deposits and provided loans. In other words, it ensured that the investment bank
and the commercial bank would no longer cohabit. Put
another way, it separated bankers with a heinous gambling habit from those who
only wanted a secure nest egg. It was simplicity itself.
After 1933, the gamblers and
savers went their separate ways, which proved a boon for the economy and the
financial system for nearly seven decades. Then
legislators, lobbyists, bankers, and regulators started to chisel away at the
wall separating those two kinds of banks. By November 1999, President Bill Clinton signed
into law the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act that repealed the Glass-Steagall Act
totally. The abusive marriages of gamblers and savers could once again be
consummated.

the US announced it had sent in Special Forces to assist Manila in its fight
against Islamist militants, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte claimed that
he never asked for the help. [[So

Duterte has refuted the long-term alliance
between Washington and Manila, going so far as to call former US
president Barack Obama a "son of a whore," vowing
to close US bases in the island archipelago, and claiming that Russia
and China will provide the only military and financial assistance his country
needs.
But the question remains
as to how US Special Forces teams gained local
authorization to join the fight, indicating that Filipino military assets

President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that martial law could be extended to
the entirety of the country, not only its southern island of Mindanao. Radio
Sputnik’s Brian Becker spoke with Bernadette Ellorin, the chair of BAYAN-USA,
to find out what might be motivating the move.
According
to Elloring, one of those groups is the New
People's Army (NPA), part of the National Democratic Front (NDF),
which is currently in the process of peace negotiations
with the Duterte administration.
Another layer
of concern, she told Becker, is that
martial law evokes dark memories of a period of martial law imposed
by the "US-backed fascist dictatorship" of Ferdinand Marcos
back in the 1970s.
"The
Filipino people do not want to return to that period of time,
which is marked by gross, gross human right violations of torture,
abduction, militarization, forced evacuation against civilians," she
said.

On June
8, a United States-led coalition attacked a motorcade of pro-Damascus allied
forces near the town of al-Tanf in southern Syria, destroying a tank and
several artillery systems. This was not the first time coalition strikes
have occurred in the area.
On May
18, the US-led coalition struck pro-Assad fighters near al-Tanf
in the area of an established de-confliction zone with Russia. The
strikes occurred near al-Tanf, where US and British special operations
forces have been training Syrian rebel fighters near the border
with Iraq and Jordan.
In an interview with Radio
Sputnik, political analyst and expert on the Middle East Anatoly el-Murid
suggested that the Pentagon is trying to designate the area the US
wants to keep de facto under control.
"The Americans have long
been training militants there, over a year and a half. Currently, this
group controls a large strip of Syria’s border in the south. All the
parties involved are now trying to take under control as many
territories as possible," el-Murid said.
"The
situation is getting tenser. Probably, so-called systemic actors will join the
game. Any party involved, including US troops or Russian forces, would
risk coming under fire. The conflict could start escalating
at any moment, and its escalation will be uncontrolled. This is very dangerous," el-Murid concluded.
