Two days ago, JPM's
head quant made a striking observation:
"Passive and Quantitative
investors now account for ~60% of equity assets (vs. less than 30% a decade
ago). We estimate that only ~10% of trading volumes originates from fundamental
discretionary traders." In short, markets are now "a
quant's world"
Bloomberg confirmed
today, when looking at another
divergence between quant funds and traditional, discretionary managers:
"systematic strategies have barely budged from near-record participation
in U.S. stocks. Meanwhile, fundamental equity long-short managers can’t afford
to be anything but picky, considering the market’s narrow leadership. The result: the
largest gap on record between humans’ and computers’ gross exposure to U.S.
equities, data compiled by Credit Suisse Group AG show."
As the chart below
shows, and confirms what JPM already revealed, "for
now, systematic traders are the dominating force in markets."
What is just as
curious,is that according to Credit Suisse "quants
hit the highest gross exposure to equities on record around May 12. It’s since come down slightly, but still remains
elevated."
Overall, according
to HFR, quant funds "which use sophisticated statistical models often
developed by Ph.D.s rather than trade based on human research and intuition to
find attractive trades" were up a modest 1.44% YTD drastically
underperforming both the S&P's 8.7% gain for the same period and the 5.7% return
for the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund, which invests 60% in stocks and 40% in
bonds, "highlighting
how far quant hedge funds are lagging behind more traditional
investments."

The returns, bad as
they may be, have not stunted investor interest. As we have shown on numerous
occasions, there has been a titanic shift in capital away from
"expensive" active/discretionary strategies and into all forms of
"cheaper" passive strats including quants.
Finally, one question remains: if virtually everyone, from quants, to hedge
funds to vanilla funds are all underperforming the market, who is outperforming it?

phenomena like black holes, gamma ray bursts and pulsar stars, according to
state news agency Xinhua.
"We are looking forward

physical laws under extreme magnetic fields," lead scientist Zhang
Shuangnan told Xinhua. "These studies are expected to bring new
breakthroughs in physics."
"Insight is expected
to push forward the development of space astronomy and improve space

physicists fired the most powerful x-ray laser ever constructed at an iodine
molecule, tearing the molecule apart in the process – and briefly causing the
iodine molecule to exhibit black hole-esque behavior.
When you have something that
powerful, you want to shoot it at stuff. The physicists used the LCLS
laser on a single iodine atom that was bound to a methyl molecule
(comprising one carbon and three hydrogen atoms), firing a beam 1,000 times
thinner than a human hair at it. They weren't sure what would happen
to such a molecular formation when struck with a laser of this
magnitude.
"When, say, a star is
close to a black hole, the gravitational pull of the black hole causes
a transfer of matter [away] from the star," explained Robin
Santra, a physicist at the University of Hamburg. "It is known
that when this happens, not only is matter sucked into the black hole,
but there is also the ejection of strong jets of matter away
from the black hole."

California-based defense company this week announced that it will be rolling
out a new set of drones to fly as robotic wingmen for human fighter pilots.
Kratos Defense & Security Solutions developed the UTAP-22 Mako with funding
from DIUx, the US Defense Department's Silicon Valley laboratory.
The highly maneuverable
Mako’s altitude capacity and supersonic speed capabilities could enable it
to fly alongside the F-35 or F-16 fighters, according
to aviation experts. After being awarded a $12.6 million contract
for the drone, Kratos says it will soon determine how autonomous it can
be, in advanced testing over California’s Mojave desert. The
Mako has already successfully flown alongside manned aircraft.
This development is part
of an effort by the US military to discern how robotics may be
used in future conflicts, in which human-piloted craft like the
F-35 Joint Strike fighter will likely be accompanied by unmanned systems, though
it’s unlikely they’ll replace manned crafts.

United States has approved a proposed $47 million sale of air-to-air Sidewinder
missiles and associated parts to Indonesia as well as $21 million sale of
Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles to Malaysia.
“This proposed sale will
contribute to the foreign policy objectives and national security
interests of the United States by making Indonesia more capable
of defeating threats to regional stability and strengthening its
homeland defense,” DSCA said on Tuesday.

Malaysian Air Force has announced that they have modified their Russian-made
Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to be able to drop GBU-12 laser-guided bombs, having
successfully tested the new platform in late 2016.
The Royal Malaysian Air Force
put out a video showing their Su-30MKMs, supermaneuverable fighters
specifically designed for use by Malaysian forces, dropping 500-pound
GBU-12s made by Lockheed-Martin and Raytheon. The video's accompanying
caption said that the test occurred in November 2016 at the Air
Force's weapons testing range.
However, the segment has
since been deleted from the video.
Malaysian ground forces also can use hand-held
designators to pick out targets.
In
2012, Malaysia purchased six Raytheon AN/ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting
Forward-Looking Infrared pods for bomb and missile targeting. It used them
to upgrade their Boeing F/A-18D Hornets, which are primarily used
by the US Marines for air support during night attacks.
