Relations between Riyadh and
Doha have taken a nosedive after state-run Qatari news agency QNA published
controversial comments attributed to Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani which saw
him allegedly praise Iran, Israel and Hezbollah, while criticizing Saudi Arabia
and the United States.
As a
result, Saudi Arabia and Qatar "have found themselves on the verge
of an information war," RIA Novosti contributor Igor Gashkov
asserted, saying that Doha "has long been engaged in a geopolitical
competition" with Riyadh.
"Doha and Riyadh do not
see eye to eye on many issues. Unlike Saudi Arabia, Qatar does not
consider Hezbollah or the Muslim Brotherhood to be terrorist
organizations. There are nearly no Shia in Qatar. This is why it is easier
for Doha to find common ground with Iran. Moreover, it has
to foster closer relations with the Islamic Republic in order
not to fall under Saudi influence," the analyst said. "In
addition, there is competition when it comes to Wahhabism. Qatar's ruling
family traces its origins to Mohammed Ibn Abd Al Wahhab, a religious
reformist. As a result, the House of Thani claims a special place
in this sensitive area."

Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday published on its website the text of the
memorandum on the creation of de-escalation areas in Syria that was signed
during the last round of the Astana talks.
The document on the ministry website explains [follow
the link to read the whole text in English] what must be done
within the lines of the de-escalation areas:
·
hostilities
between the conflicting parties (the government of the Syrian Arab
Republic and the armed opposition groups that have joined and will join the
ceasefire regime) with the use of any kinds of weapons,
including aerial assets, shall be ceased;
·
rapid, safe and
unhindered humanitarian access shall be provided;
·
conditions
to deliver medical aid to local population and to meet basic
needs of civilians shall be created;
·
measures
to restore basic infrastructure facilities, starting with water
supply and electricity distribution networks, shall be taken;
·
conditions
for the safe and voluntary return of refugees and
internally displaced persons shall be created.
According to the memorandum, the creation of the
de-escalation zones is a temporary measure with the initial duration of six
months.
The text
of the memorandum implies the creation of zones in Idlib province and certain
parts of the neighboring provinces, in certain parts of the Homs province, in
certain parts of Daraa and Quneitra provinces as well as in Eastern Ghouta.

The United States, Britain and
Germany have kicked off a new initiative aimed at arming and training Peshmerga
military forces, General Helgurd Hikmet, an official representative of the
Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs at the Kurdistan Regional Government, told
Sputnik.
According
to the sources, the US has also taken the responsibility of training
the aforementioned military units. Given the cost of the training and
other expenses, Washington is reportedly going to spend about $200 million
on the two Peshmerga battalions. Weapons and ammunition will be delivered
to the battalions in September 2017.
"This training is
conditioned by necessity," Hikmet told Sputnik. "It will make a
significant contribution to maintaining and developing the military
potential of the Peshmerga forces. It will also produce a positive effect
on political and other affairs. This decision is of great importance
as for both the Peshmerga units, and the entire [Iraqi] Kurdistan
region."

equivalent of Beanie Babies. Cryptocurrencies have utility value.
They facilitate international payments for goods and services.
The primary cryptocurrencies are
not a scam. Advertising a flawless Beanie Baby and shipping a
defective Beanie Baby is a scam. Advertising a mortgage-backed security as
low-risk and delivering a guaranteed-to-default stew of toxic mortgages is a
scam.
The primary cryptocurrencies (bitcoin, Ethereum and Dash)
have transparent rules for emitting currency. The core characteristic of a scam
is the asymmetry between what the seller knows (the product is garbage) and
what the buyer knows (garsh, this mortgage-backed security is low-risk–look at
the rating).
Both buyers and sellers of primary cryptocurrencies are in a
WYSIWYG market: what you see is what you get. While a Beanie Baby scam might use cryptocurrencies as a means of
exchange, this
doesn’t make primary cryptocurrencies a scam, any more than using dollars to
transact a scam makes the dollar itself a scam.
