Recession Watch: Freight Volume Drops to Worst Level
since 2010

Freight shipments by
truck and rail in the US fell 4.9% in April from the beaten-down levels of
April 2015, according to the Cass Transportation Index, released on Friday. It
was the worst April since 2010, which followed the worst March since 2010. In
fact, shipment volume over the four months this year was the worst since 2010.
This is no longer
statistical “noise” that can easily be brushed off.
The Cass
Freight Index is based on “more than $26 billion” in annual freight
transactions by “hundreds of large shippers,” regardless of mode of
transportation, including by truck and rail. It does not cover bulk
commodities, such as oil and coal and thus is not impacted by the collapsing
oil and coal shipments. The index is focused on consumer packaged goods, food,
automotive, chemical, OEM, heavy equipment, and retail.

is not seasonally adjusted. Hence the strong seasonal patterns in the chart.

And May is not going
to look much better.
Transportation data
provider DAT looks at this from the truckers’ point of view. It tracks national
spot-market demand for trucks and availability of trucks via its load-to-truck
ratio – “a sensitive real-time indicator” of the balance between the two. And
the spot market for the largest category, van-type trailers has become ugly:
Last month, the load-to-truck ratio for vans plunged 46% from April 2015, and
52% from April 2014. It has been terrible all year (red line):
Cass notes that the
economy “decelerated in the first four months of 2016.” And this “slowdown,”
the report said, was caused by:
- the continued decline of the global economy;
- the reticence of the consumer sector to increase its buying;
- the loss of jobs and income from the plunging oil costs (which shut down the fracking business and cut back on coal shipments);
- very high inventory levels across the entire supply chain;
- and poor export figures due to both the strength of the U.S. dollar and a decline in worldwide demand
This type of
transportation data shines some light on the goods-based economy in the US, and
by extension, in the world: the goods-based economy is hurting – and there are
no signs it’s getting any better anytime soon.

the absence of further liquidation as if there will be no more liquidations
when in fact the likelihood of more of them only rises the more they are
artificially “contained.”

“Print the money”
has been called crazy talk, but it may be the only sane solution to a $19
trillion federal debt that has doubled in the last 10 years. The solution of
Abraham Lincoln and the American colonists can still work today.
“Reckless,”
“alarming,” “disastrous,” “swashbuckling,” “playing with fire,” “crazy talk,”
“lost in a forest of nonsense”: these are a few of the labels applied by media
commentators to Donald Trump’s latest proposal for dealing with the
federal debt. On Monday, May 9th, the presumptive Republican presidential
candidate said on CNN, “You print the money.”
The remark was in
response to a firestorm created the previous week, when Trump was asked if the
US should pay its debt in full or possibly negotiate partial repayment. He
replied, “I would borrow, knowing that if the economy crashed, you could make a
deal.” Commentators took this to mean a default. On May 9, Trump countered that he was
misquoted:
People said I want to go and buy debt and default on debt – these
people are crazy. This is the United States government. First of all, you never
have to default because you print the money, I hate to tell you, okay? So
there’s never a default.

So many New York state legislators and leaders of the
legislature are currently in prison that when former state Senate Majority
Leader Dean Skelos (R-Nassu County) was sentenced to five years in prison on
Thursday, most New Yorkers, inured, just shrugged it off. After all,
Republicans are on the verge of nominating Donald Trump for the presidency and
the level of Trump's self-entitled corruption is of a magnitude hard to measure
compared to poor nepotistic Skelos'.
The federal judge sentenced Skelos' rotten son, Adam to
six-and-a-half years in prison, even more than his father's sentence and,
addressing Dean, said "You sent a message that you,
one of the three most powerful
politicians in New York state, were in some measure corrupt,
and that you used your official position for personal gain." The two Skeloses had been found guilty of conspiracy,
bribery and extortion last December. A week earlier Skelos' Democratic counterpart, state Assembly Speaker
Sheldon Silver was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of
fraud, extortion and money laundering. Too bad they missed Cuomo so
far-- and Schumer.
Let's face it, the American
political establishment stinks of corruption from top to bottom. Trump in office would make it worse. So
would Hillary Clinton in office. Anyone who votes for either one of them is complicit in what
they bring with them. A Democrat voting for Hillary as the lesser of two evil
is on the same moral grounds as a Republican voting for Trump as the lesser
