"[In 2018], Americans, Japanese, Europeans, and people in many other rich countries, and some relatively poor ones will probably be paying for their shopping with the same currency. Prices will be quoted not in dollars, yen or D-marks but in, let’s say, the phoenix. The phoenix will be favoured by companies and shoppers because it will be more convenient than today’s national currencies..."

US gasoline demand continues to surprise analysts by how weak it is. So weak, in fact, that Bank of America has released a note which has BofA's stunned energy analyst Francisco Blanch asking "where is the driving season?" and, more specifically, "Is this year's driving season over before it began?"

UN Anti-Nuclear Treaty Is 'Very Significant' Step Toward Nuke-Free World  https://sputniknews.com/world/201707091055389561-anti-nuclear-treaty-first-step/

A legally-binding treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons was adopted by 122 UN member states on Friday. The treat covers the full range of nuclear-weapons-related activities, prohibiting undertaking by any State party to develop, test, produce, manufacture, acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.  LISTEN:  Player controls  Radio Sputnik  Nuclear Ban Treaty: ‘There’s no excuse for having nuclear weapons, deterrence is a myth’ – analyst

The ten-page treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons will be open for signatures from any UN member state on 20 September during the annual general assembly.

Nuclear powers such as the US, Russia and some allies who host nuclear weapons on their soil did not take part in the discussions, but supporters of the treaty said they hope nuclear-weapon states will be able to eventually join the treaty.

Russia, Mikhail Ulyanov, said that Moscow fears that the treaty could "have a negative influence on the state of affairs in the international arena, primarily in nuclear non-proliferation."

Harvey Wasserman, author and co-founder of the global grassroots No Nukes movement, told Radio Sputnik that the treaty is an "important first step" toward a nuclear weapon-free world.

"Frankly, it's a shame that the countries that have nuclear weapons have them, there's no room for nuclear weapons. A nuclear weapon is basically a match in a room full of gasoline. The idea of deterrence is a myth, any use of nuclear weapons of any country will have a global impact and in fact threaten all human life on Earth."
"So, anything that leads us closer to getting rid of nuclear weapons as well as nuclear power plants is an important step forward," Wasserman said.

Costa Rica's Permanent Representative at the UN Elayne Whyte Gomez presided over the UN conference to negotiate a legally-binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons. She said that the adoption of the treaty is a "historic moment."

Wasserman said that the symbolism of the treaty is "very significant."

"We hope that none of the signees will move to develop nuclear weapons, that helps. Then, of course we have to have the nuclear countries come to their senses and get rid of nuclear weapons. There's simply no excuse whatsoever for having a nuclear weapon, certainly never for using one and I hope this treaty will at least get us close to getting rid of all of them," Wasserman said.

Ukraine Hopes to Receive US Support in Settlement of Donbass Conflict  https://sputniknews.com/europe/201707091055385669-poroshenko-ukraine-normandy/

KIEV (Sputnik) — Ukraine expects to receive support from the United States and the Normandy Four countries in the process of settlement of Donbass’ conflict, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Sunday at a press conference following his talks with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

"We stick to the commitments which we have undertaken under the Minsk process and we seek the help from the United States and in the Normandy format," Poroshenko said.

In February 2015, the warring parties to the Ukrainian conflict in Donbass signed the Minsk peace accords in order to cease fire in the crisis-torn region. Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine, as the members of the Normandy Four, helped negotiate the Donbas ceasefire. The truce, however, has been repeatedly breached, with Kiev forces and Donbas militia accusing each other of violating it.

THREATENING OR BLUFFING: Is the US Really Ready to Strike North Korea?  https://sputniknews.com/asia/201707091055385463-us-north-korea-strike/

This week, the US, France and the United Kingdom called for the adoption of a new sanctioning resolution of the UN Security Council on North Korea to answer for its July 4 missile test. Political observer for RIA Novosti Ilya Kharlamov reviewed whether the US is ready for more active, military measures against Pyongyang.

On Tuesday, North Korea announced it had successfully launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), saying it traveled 580 miles (933 km) and reached an altitude of 1,740 miles (2,800 km) during its 39-minute flight before accurately hitting a targeted area in the Sea of Japan.

The Russian Defense Ministry, however, informed that North Korea had tested a mid-range, and not intercontinental, ballistic missile.

A Voronezh-type radar station deployed in the Irkutsk region monitored the launch of the Hwasong-14 medium-range ballistic missile from North Korea, which flew about 14 minutes, about 510 kilometers (317 miles) far and 535 kilometers (332 miles) high, landing in the Sea of Japan, the ministry said in a reference, which, together with a schematic illustration showing flight parameters, was sent to the UN Secretary General and to the Chairman of the Security Council.
