According to the Citi
cross-asset strategist the bank's NISI Index (news implied sentiment indicator, Figure 1), has
plunged sharply into bearish territory in the latest print, to its lowest level
in 18 months, since January 2016. The latest print in NISI suggests renewed skew towards pessimistic
sentiment and thus looking at past correlations to the NISI, Citi warns that the SPX may fall relative to trend for a
period on this measure.
Next, liquidity.
As Matt
King points out, a global shift to
tighter monetary policy next year may be quite threatening to risk assets,
given how important unconventional monetary policies have been for markets in
recent years. His chart, which plots risk asset momentum vs.
global central bank asset purchases in a 12 month rolling window, suggests in the
event that all major CB’s shrink liquidity together, the
implied path may see stocks correct -30% (Figure 3).

It's
difficult to say what most Americans commemorate or celebrate on Independence
Day nowadays. Many appear to
focus on some vague notion of "America." Lost in all of this is the
fact that the Declaration of Independence - the document we're supposed
to remember today - is a document that promotes secession, rebellion,
and what the British at the time regarded as treason.

In a whirlwind of activity on America's nation holiday, just around
noon, first the Illinois Senate voted to approve the
House tax hike and spending bill, then shortly after, state Gov. Rauner
- just as he warned he would - vetoed both the income tax increase and the
budget bill and budget implementation bill, only to be
himself overriden moments later by the Senate, as it took the drastic measure
to end a record budget impasse.

After Pyongyang's Missile Launch, Trump Signals He May Give Up on China’s Xi https://sputniknews.com/military/201707041055231589-trump-signals-us-go-solo/
The
Trump administration, following what Washington officials are saying was North
Korea’s first launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, has suggested
that Washington may go it alone on Pyongyang, unless China makes a “heavy move”
toward disarming the isolated country.
Trump's
Sunday night phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping preceded the
missile launch, and was cordial but blunt, according to the New York
Times, as the US president warned that the White House would act alone, if
need be, to stop Pyongyang's ballistic missile and nuclear weapons
program.
The
announcement of Washington's willingness to act alone is seen
as a clear indication that any honeymoon between Trump's
administration and Beijing is over, as the US has recently completed a
large sale of weapons to Taiwan, threatened Beijing with trade
sanctions, and accused China of widespread human trafficking.

North Korea Escalation Could Lead to Potentially Catastrophic Situation – Moscow https://sputniknews.com/politics/201707041055217139-north-korea-escalation/
The
widening spiral of escalation surrounding North Korea could lead to an
uncontrolled and potentially catastrophic developments, Russian Deputy Foreign
Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Tuesday.
Ryabkov pointed out that
Moscow's proposals on North Korea boil down to multilateral dialogue
and avoiding escalation.
"North Korea's new
missile launch is another reminder that other options simply do not exist if we
do not want to slip into a completely uncontrolled, potentially
catastrophic situation," he said.
Moscow is concerned about North Korea's missile launch in violation
of the UN ` Security
Council, Ryabkov added.
"We are alarmed, worried
and are following what is happening with a great sense
of apprehension for the situation in Northeast Asia," Ryabkov said.

What is visible on July 4th is
the overwhelming consumerism of an American holiday: the over-hyped sales campaigns, the
overdulgences of the table, and the obligatory displays of fireworks. But
beneath this celebratory surface run questions about American identity and the
state of grace of the American soul.
There is a darkness in that soul,
the poisonous darkness of greed, complacency and hubris. Individualism, it
seems, means not the making of one’s own way but the demanding of sacrifices by
others to maintain one’s own lifestyle: the sacrifices laid on the next generations to pay our lavish
medical and retirement benefits, and the sacrificing of the planet to supply us
with cheap energy, particle-board furniture and all the other gimcracks which
are piled up in countless garages and storage facilities across the overstuffed
suburbs of America.
There is another American soul, a largely forgotten one;
that of Emerson, Thoreau and Muir. Emerson’s essay Self-Reliance speaks to a radical
individualism: “Insist on yourself; never
imitate.”
His vision has been reduced to a callow “do your own thing,”
but his individualism is not the type trumpeted by consumerism, of dependence
on the state and all the ills of self-absorption. It is both spiritual (Emerson
was a Harvard-trained minister, after all) and a state of being.
