was conspicuously brief and never made it past the last weeks of 2013. By early 2014, while Bernanke was handing off to Janet Yellen
what he thought was the right baseline monetary tendencies for ultimate
economic success, he had only been
fooling himself yet again (for a man as intelligent as Bernanke, he
clearly stopped learning at MIT in 1979 with his PhD).

below. This shows Russia’s reserve position from 2013–18. The reserve position
collapsed from $540 billion to $350 billion as a result of the oil price crash
beginning in late 2014. (And query whether the oil
price collapse itself was engineered by the U.S. in retaliation for Russia’s
annexation of Crimea).

Russia has rebuilt its reserve position under the patient stewardship of
Russian Central Bank head Elvira Nabiullina. Russian reserves are now back up
to $460 billion and rising steadily.
Yet
there’s one huge difference between Russian reserves in 2014 and those reserves
today. That difference is gold. During the reserve collapse in 2014, Russia
sold U.S. dollar assets as needed to maintain liquidity, but it never stopped
buying gold.

By any measure... the
Federal Reserve is still extraordinarily easy.
Although
the Federal Reserve has been steadily raising the cost of borrowing,
the real level of Fed Funds is rising nowhere near as quickly as the
angst among investors.

The Federal
Government’s fiscal policy is as loose as it’s been in ages, and when you
combine that with real rates, I just don’t see any reason to assume the economy
is about to roll over. .. Of course, I have learned long ago to never say
never. But what always intrigues me is the disconnect between what the
market believes and what is the most likely outcome.
Even
though a 2% return for cash sounds high, too many are assuming we are stuck in
a post-GFC world where interest rates hover around zero forever.
Meanwhile, in the
real economy, these rates are low measured in real terms. The Federal Reserve is still easy
after all these years…
