Creepy, Calculating & Controlling: All the Ways Big Brother Is Watching You. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. None of us are perfect. All of us bend the rules occasionally. Indeed, there was a time when most Americans thought nothing of driving a few miles over the speed limit, pausing (rather than coming to a full stop) at a red light when making a right-hand turn if no one was around, or jaywalking across the street. My, how times have changed. Today, there’s little room for indiscretions, imperfections, or acts of independence. In such an environment, you’re either a paragon of virtue, or you’re a criminal. If you haven’t figured it out yet, we’re all criminals. This is the creepy, calculating yet diabolical genius of the American police state: the very technology we hailed as revolutionary and liberating has become our prison, jailer, probation officer, Big Brother and Father Knows Best all rolled into one.

Apocalypse How? Scientists Unveil 12 Risks That Threaten Human Existence. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. From 'Armageddon' to 'Day After Tomorrow' to 'Independence Day', many have speculated as to the eventual demise of human life on the planet but - according to Dennis Pamlin of the Global Challenges Foundation, no scientists had "compiled a list of global risks with impacts that, for all practical purposes, can be called infinite,” until now. The following list of 12 possible ways that human civilization might end - ranked from least to most likely, come with a warning, "we don’t want to be accused of scaremongering but we want to get policy makers talking." We suspect Paul Krugman will be happy at the economic growth potential...

What Russians Think Of Western Sanctions. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. Parsing the Russian media (corporate and social) illustrates the stunningly different way the issue of western sanctions is discussed. As we show below, there are six notable factors that leave an entirely unavoidable conclusion: western sanctions have exactly zero chance of achieving any change at all in Russian foreign policy and exactly zero chance of weakening the current regime. In fact perhaps the opposite.

State Dept: "We Can't Beat ISIS By Killing Them..." They Need Jobs. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. State Department spokesperson Marie Harf explains to no lesser pillar of unbiased reporting than Chris Matthews that - as opposed to President Obama's 'bomb them into oblivion' perspective, "we can't kill our way out of this war [with ISIS]... we must address the root causes - like joblessness." Even Matthews is stunned at this perspective, exclaiming "we're never going to chieve that in 50 lifetimes, there'll always be poor muslims." But, as the administration appears to be suggesting, even every radical muslim deserves $10.25 an hour to work at Baghdad McDonalds...

Obama To Allow "Moderate" Syrian Rebels Call In B-1B Bombers For Air Support. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015 While Obama desperately tries to stick to his now crushed "Nobel peace prize winner" image, by not succumbing to an all-out land war in the one nation where his progressive "pacifism" brought him fame (and according to some, the presidency), namely Iraq, the rest of militant, "interventionist" US foreign policy is rapidly starting to resemble that waged by the most brutally rabid, neo-con Republican leader. Case in point an absolute stunner reported minutes ago by the WSJ, according to which the White House has decided to provide pickup trucks equipped with mounted machine guns and radios for calling in U.S. airstrikes to some moderate Syrian rebels aided by American B-1B bombers!

Stockman To Obama: Butt Out Of The Greek Crisis - You've Dispensed Enough Keynesian Poison At Home Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. Our clueless President observed, "You cannot keep on squeezing countries that are in the midst of depression. At some point there has to be a growth strategy in order for them to pay off their debts..." No, paying off their debts is exactly the wrong medicine. You do not kick the can and extend and pretend that Greece can service its crushing debt. Instead, you permit it to default, and then to rebuild it’s economy and credit the old fashioned way. In any event, its a problem for the Europeans and the Greeks to resolve. Obama should stop sending Keynesian witch doctors to spread more policy poison around Europe.

"Optimistic" Putin Says US Already Supplying Arms To Ukraine. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. Vladimir Putin says he is "more optimist than pessimist" on Ukraine, but warns that there will be "no end to war if Kiev believes in a military solution." Noting that he believes there has been an "overall decrease" in military activity, he notes that Debaltseve was "possible to forecast," and then proclaims:
*PUTIN SAYS U.S. ARMS ALREADY BEING SUPPLIED TO UKRAINE
Of course, we already have "YouTube" proof of American military presence in Ukraine (which for Washington would have been good enough to wage war) but Putin offers no specific proof and adds rather pointedly that "most Ukraine troops want no part of fractricidal war."

Failed Discipline, Failed Reforms And Grexit: Why The Euro Failed. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. It's not that difficult to understand why the euro is doomed to fail. Given its structure, there is no other possible outcome but failure. Greece's exit (Grexit) will simply be the first manifestation of the inevitable structural failure of the euro. To understand why this is so, we have to start with two forms of discipline: the market and the state.

Ukraine "Truce" Fails: Withdrawal Deadline Passes, Debaltseve Situation Deteriorating. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. UPDATE: *POROSHENKO SAYS UN MUST NOT ALLOW FULL-SCALE WAR IN EUROPE.  As the game of chicken between Greece and the Eurogroup hots up, it appears another - potentially far more deadly - is escalating in Ukraine as neither side is willing to follow through on the terms of the Minsk Summit peace deal - removing heavy weaponry from the frontlines - as a key deadline passes without agreement. As The Guardian reports, The Ukrainian military have stated that "as soon as the militants cease fire, the Ukrainian side will begin to withdraw heavy weaponry from the frontline," and the pro-Russian separatists proclaim, "We do not have the right [to stop fighting for Debaltseve]," adding that as far as the truce, "we have everything ready for a mutual withdrawal. We will not do anything unilaterally – that would make our soldiers targets."

Stocks Go Green, Euro Spikes On Report Greece To Ask Request Program Extension Tomorrow. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. Now where have we seen this before? Surprise contradictory headlines that occur shortly after vehement statements by leaders: *GREECE AIMS TO REQUEST LOAN ACCORD EXTENSION TOMORROW: OFFICIAL

This comes after Varoufakis and Tspiras specifically saying that they will not extend the current loan accord: "Salvation will not come by extending the mistake," adding that compromise on the current program "is not an agreement but a surrender that would complete the euthanasia of our country."

Meet The New Greek President. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. ... but since this is Sparta, er, Greece, it is best to see him in action. He is the gentleman with the white hair. (see Video photo) Earlier today, it was revealed that Prokopis Pavlopoulos, a "centre-right moderate" will be the government's candidate for president. According to Kathimerini, while speaking to SYRIZA's parliamentary group on Tuesday, Tsipras said the decision to nominate the former conservative Interior Minister reflected the need for political and social consensus.

And since ND will endorse the Syriza candidate, Prokopis Pavlopoulos will almost certainly be elected during a vote on Wednesday or Thursday (perhaps just in time to celebrate the ECB's yanking of Greek emergency liquidity access). http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-02-17/meet-new-greek-president

As Bank Run Accelerates, Greek Depositors Pray To Saint Mario. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. If Greek authorities don’t take up euro area finance ministers’ offer this week, ELA funds to Greek banks would likely be shut down, they wrote."

"Greek Democracy Can't Be Threatened" Defiant Tsipras Warns "Won't Step Back From Promises". Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. The rhetoric from both sides in Europe is hotting up but we suggest Tsipras' comments seem far more personal and existential than the Eurogroup's beligerence for now: GREEK DEMOCRACY CAN'T BE THREATENED

*TSIPRAS: GREEK GOVT NOT IN A HURRY, WON'T COMPROMISE, WON'T TAKE A STEP BACK FROM PROMISES TO PEOPLE

With a "strong mandate" to save the country, Tsipras adds that he wants "a solution, not rupture."

How To Trade The Grexit Scenarios, And What The "Worst-Case" Looks Like. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. When it comes to trading the possibility of a Grexit, Bloomberg strategist Vassilis Karamanis writes, that there are three possible outcomes.

Scenario 1: Greece exits the euro
Scenario 2: Capital controls are imposed on Greek banks
Scenario 3: Agreement is reached within the next days

Futures Rebound On Collapse In Greek Negotiations, After Europe's Largest Derivatives Exchange Breaks. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/17/2015. There was a brief period this morning when market prices were almost determined by non-central banks. Almost. Because shortly before the European market open, a technical failure on the Eurex exchange prevented trading in euro-area bond futures the day after Greek debt talks collapsed. And sure enough, after initially seeing significant downward pressure, which nobody could capitalize on of course courtesy of the broken Eurex, risk both in Europe and the US has since rebounded courtesy of the ECB, SNB and BIS, led by the EURUSD (because a Grexit threat which according to Commerzbank has been raised from 25% to 50% is bullish for the artificial currency), which is now at the level last seen just before yesterday's negotiations broke down, and US futures are about to go green.
