US campaign against ISIL has no
exit strategy: By Jan Oberg
Press TV has conducted an interview with Jan Oberg,
founder of the transnational.org from Lund, to discuss the US-led coalition
airstrikes against the ISIL terrorist group in Syria and Iraq.
What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.

Press TV: First of
all, let’s focus on the aims and the so-called sincerity of this US-led
coalition against the ISIL which has now been targeting various areas in Iraq
and Syria as well?
Oberg: I think the
sincerity is misplaced. The bombing now of ISIS is a consequence, a result or a
continuation of the war on Iraq that started in 2003.
What really worries me is that this is in total defiance of understanding of the conflict. Point two; many more civilians must by definition be killed now than you can kill terrorists. Third, you cannot combat terrorism by killing terrorists.
If you want to end terrorism, you have to understand what motivates people to become terrorists and you have to listen to the grievances people have.

Obama does not have a
strategy because if he had a strategy, he would have talked about diplomatic
solutions afterwards. He would have talked about an exit strategy from this.
Press TV: You
mentioned the issue of an exit strategy. I’d like to get your thoughts on what
is the end game when these so-called national coalitions attack a common cause,
what is their exit strategy in this regard and what would be left afterwards?
Oberg: There is no
exit strategy. This is an open-ended struggle.
There is no idea about what to do after bombing or what to achieve from this bombing.
By doing this, you will only have more hateful people of the West where we need to apologize for things we have done before. We have to apologize for hundreds of years of power politics in the Middle East and we have to sit down at some point with everyone at a table.
