ECONOMICS

Taken together recent economic data paint a picture of a global economy that’s finally returning to the kind of solid growth and steady, positive inflation that most people consider both normal and good. Unfortunately, the reason for the improvement is emphatically not good: In 2016 the world borrowed a huge amount of money and spent the proceeds. The result is “growth,” but not sustainable growth.

In December 2014, as gas prices had plunged over 20% YoY, Janet Yellen proclaimed "from the standpoint of the U.S... the decline we've seen in oil prices is likely to be, on net, a positive," and that narrative of slumping gas prices being "unequivocally good" for Americans was spewed everywhere across linear-thinking mainstream media. So we wonder, with gas prices up 22% year-over, the fastest spike since 2011, is that "unequivocally bad" for America?

Talk about conflicted. Just ask yourself WHY Wall Street spends BILLIONS of dollars each year in marketing and advertising trying to keep you invested at all times. Since optimism is what sells products, it is not surprising, as we head into 2017, to see Wall Street’s average expectation ratcheted up another 4.7% this year.

“Investor appetite for U.S. equities is seemingly insatiable,” said David Santschi, chief executive officer of TrimTabs.  “U.S. equity ETFs have had inflows on all but six trading days since the U.S. presidential election, and the buying volume has been by far the strongest we’ve ever seen.”

"We will wait for unambiguous signs of bullish investor Positioning, bullish Profit expectations & hawkish Policy from Fed/ECB, as well as outperformance from laggard risk assets in 2016, before calling for The Big Short."

Suddenly the coolest thing in corporate America is announcing major capital investments in the US while adding thousands of American jobs, in other words the opposite of the globalization trend of the past 30 years, in yet other words, doing precisely what Donald Trump demands.

POLITICS

Dear Senator McCain: If meddling in foreign governments is an act of war, you are personally involved, with tremendous blood on your hands.

Reince Priebus spoke on Fox News Sunday and said Trump understands that Moscow was behind the intrusions into the Democratic Party organizations. "He accepts the fact that this particular case was entities in Russia so that’s not the issue" and added that Trump "is not denying that entities in Russia were behind this particular hacking campaign."

Trump still hasn’t - now just days before entering the White House - reversed himself regarding his intention to improve relations with Russia. Becoming even more hostile toward Russia is almost a unanimous goal of the U.S. aristocracy. They’re thus rebelling against him, in their ‘news’ media, and they won’t stop trying to cripple his Presidency unless and until he relents on this, turns around, and continues, ever-hotter than before, their (under Obama, increasing) ’Cold War’ against Russia.

Excuse us for wanting to point out the obvious, but sometimes the obvious gets very lost in the web of narratives spun by the master narrator inside the White House. Forgive us, but are we not losing the idea that the only narrative that really matters is that all of the information 'leaked' was obtained through a simple fishing e-mail sent to John Podesta. See their own words here...

NOT TIME, NOT SPACE FOR HER IN REAL DEMOCRACY

DOES HE KNOWS TOO MUCH? .. WHOSE TERRORISM?

Federal prosecutors filed court documents on Saturday charging Ft. Lauderdale airport shooting suspect Esteban Santiago with carrying out an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death - a charge which carries a maximum punishment of the death penalty. Meanwhile, it emerged overnight that a firearm seized from Santiago by the FBI and Anchorage police was returned to him in December after he was found not to be mentally ill.

WORLD ISSUES and ME

The volatility in the Chinese currency has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. After exploding 21 handles stronger in the biggest PBOC-engineered short-squeeze in history - erasing the entire post-election sell-off - offshore Yuan is now collapsing once again, down 350 pips tonight (and over 10 big figures from Thursday's highs). While interbank rates have calmed down, the rush to exit the currency has not...

While Russia continues to mostly mock and ridicule, and generally take in good humor the constant allegations by the Obama administration that it "hacked the election", China's reaction to a similar accusation has demonstrated far less sense of humor.

WASHINGTON BLOG

By Joe Giambrone, Political Film Blog.

Democrats and their apologists have proven to be far more pathetic than previously witnessed. A quasi-fascist nationalism has erupted, and the blind rush to conflate Donald Trump with Russia has expanded the envelope of delusion.

What is it they claim now? And based on what actual evidence?
The CIA floated a conspiracy theory to undermine Trump in the Electoral College, a Hail Mary pass after the election upset. Yes, a conspiracy theory, the dangerous kind that puts nuclear-armed nations at each other’s throats.
“And yet, there is skepticism within the American government, particularly at the F.B.I., that this evidence adds up to proof that the Russians had the specific objective of getting Mr. Trump elected.”

What’s more, that’s still the case!
“Officials reiterated that there is no single intercepted communication that qualifies as a ‘smoking gun’ on Russia’s intention to benefit Trump’s candidacy or to claim credit for doing so.”

“Reiterated” because the message is clearly not getting through the solid wall of hysteria.
That plain truth is clearly the opposite of the propaganda blitzkrieg we have just witnessed, from Saturday Night Live to the usual suspects at the foundation-funded left-leaning propaganda complex, those “gatekeepers.” Nor to the nation’s political cartoonists, who have led the charge to conflate Trump with Vladimir Putin, even though none of us has seen a single shred of credible evidence. The propaganda tsunami has been so voluminous that it’s difficult to recall a previous comparable situation. Only the false ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ bamboozle comes to mind, and we know how that worked out; don’t we?
----
----

The U.S. government has now generated numerous news stories and released multiple “reports” aimed at persuading us that Vladimir Putin is to blame for Donald Trump becoming president. U.S. media has dutifully informed us that the case has been made. What has been made is the case for writing your own news coverage. The “reports” from the “intelligence community” are no lengthier than the New York Times and Washington Post articles about them. Why not just read the reports and cut out the middle-person?

The New York Times calls the latest report “damning and surprisingly detailed” before later admitting in the same “news” article that the report “contained no information about how the agencies had collected their data or had come to their conclusions.” A quick glance at the report itself would have made clear to you that it did not pretend to present a shred of evidence that Russia hacked emails or served as a source for WikiLeaks. Yet Congresswoman Barbara Lee declared the evidence in this evidence-free report “overwhelming.” What should progressives believe, the best Congresswoman we’ve got or our own lying eyes?

Supposedly the evidence has been made public and is overwhelming, but try to find it and you’ll come up dry. Ask why, and you’ll be told that of course the evidence cannot be made public as that would risk revealing how the U.S. government came upon the information. Yet the same government feeds the U.S. media with the story that it intercepted communications of top Russian officials just after the U.S. election celebrating Trump’s victory. Did that story not run that risk? The U.S. government feeds the U.S. media (specifically the “free” press of the Washington Post whose owner makes more money from the CIA than from the Washington Post) that Russia has hacked Vermont’s electrical supply, and — because this was a claim that could be checked by an independent party — the secret methods of the CIA quickly turned out to be these: they had simply made the thing up.
