GLOBAL CONTEXT: N.1

No difficult economic terms, no tough charts, just simple math...we've gone over the cliff but somehow haven't realized it quite yet.

N.2

Mainstream media are reporting that Japan has become the biggest holder of the US treasuries, surpassing China last month. However, this is true only in regard to single countries, as The EU became the top US Treasury holder in February 2016, i.e. one year ago. Unfortunately, the EU’s holdings are artificially overstated because of some financial havens and they are going in the opposite direction to the trend: up rather than down.

The last month has seen the lowest trading range for The Dow since 1900...

And as realized volatility has collapsed...

The Dollar and Yields decoupled today...

The USD Index flip-flopped around all day... having tumbled to the lowest levels since The ECB meeting in December...

The US Dollar and rates have decoupled for the first time since the election: As RBC highlighted by rates continue to see "reflation" bets placed, while Dollar longs look to be scaling-back/"selling the inauguration."

President Trump’s initial emphasis on renewing the US manufacturing base is largely symbolic. Even if his administration were to successfully use tax incentives, protectionist measures and immigration policies to re-patriate factories and labor, and even if government were to spend big on fiscal stimulus, it still would not solve the structural leverage problem facing the US economy.

After two weeks of large crude and gasoline builds, API reported bigger than expected builds in crude, gasoline, and distillates (and smaller than expected draw in Cushing) which sent WTI prices tumbing, crossing back below the $53 Maginot Line once again.

You've heard the axiom "History repeats itself." It does, but never in exactly the same way. To apply the lessons of the past, we must understand the differences of the present.

To economists, free trade means the absence of government interference with trade: no tariffs, quotas, subsidies, or other interventions, explicit or implicit. To politicians, "free-trade" means a complex set of managed trade policies. "In truth," as Rothbard noted, "the bipartisan establishment’s trumpeting of 'free trade' since World War II fosters the opposite of genuine freedom of exchange."

According to the latest, just released quarterly Capital One financial report, the US taxicab industry may be on the verge of collapse as the NPL rate of the company's Taxi Medallion loans exploded from 38.8% to over 51% in just one quarter.

POLITICS

[[ “The demonstrations of defiance last Saturday, showed we are two nations now, two peoples,  two Americas in the North”. TRUE: In one side are the mafias of buyers and sellers of stolen wealth –the parasites of Wall Street-, those who assaulted our democracy during the elections of2016..  with two corrupted parties .. financed by super-packs , n anonymous foundations. They paid a bunch of polit mercenaries called  super-delegates… this is the tiny part of America –the 1%-  who now control the political power. We call them “oligarchy”.  In the other side is the people, the nation, the working classes, the small business man or middle classes.. all of them with debts up to their neck .. and the young people with not future inside the obsolete neoliberal system .. those are the repressed people by the police in the streets; those are the ones daily harassed, extortionate by debt collectors  send by bankers, big pharma and other corp owner of their health and their life. These are the two nations, two peoples whose interests are totally different. Those are the ones who went to streets to say to Trump that he don’t represent us. Now is clear that him and la dama Clinton represent the oligarchy, the small sector of the society  that corrupted & destroyed the rests of our democracy in 2016. These demonstrations are the continuation of people  struggle for real democracy. The nation has said that they are ready to continue the struggle.. “All wrong things you do, the nation will put it down”. That will happens, not matters what and how.. They will find the means. That is for sure. ]]

President Barack Obama had an average approval rating of 47.9% during his time in office, according to the Gallup poll. That puts him behind Richard Nixon, who resigned, and George W. Bush, who saw his approval rating drop as low as 25% near the end of his term.

The growth of US military power has rarely, if ever, been the result of legitimate concerns about defensive strategy, let alone about the national welfare. Instead, it’s more often a consequence of a waste, corruption, and imperial ambition that together have produced the modern military-industrial complex.

WORLD ISSUES and ME

"It is a frightening reality that the U.S. now has a Commander-in-Chief who has demonstrated ignorance of the nuclear triad, stated his desire to be ‘unpredictable’ with nuclear weapons.. and has suggested that he would consider launching nuclear attacks against terrorists..  it is essential for the standard [of checks and balances] to be applied to the potentially civilization-ending threat of nuclear war."

WASHINGTON BLOG

As noted yesterday in The Collapse of the Left, the working class has finally awakened to the Left’s betrayal and abandonment of labor in favor of the protected privileges of the elitist Establishment. I also described the Left’s Great Con:

To mask the collapse of the Left’s economic defense of labor, the Left has substituted social justice movements for economic opportunities and security. This has succeeded brilliantly, as tens of millions of self-described “progressives” now parrot the Great Con that “social justice” campaigns on behalf of marginalized social groups are now the defining feature of Progressive Social Democratic movements.

This diversionary sleight-of-hand embrace of economically neutered “social justice” campaigns masked the fact that social democratic parties everywhere have thrown labor into the churning propellers of globalization, open immigration and neoliberal financial policies–all of which benefit mobile capital, which has engorged itself on the abandonment of labor by the Left.

Meanwhile, the fat-cats of the Left have engorged themselves on capital’s largesse in exchange for their treachery. Bill and Hillary Clinton’s $200 million in “earnings” come to mind, as do countless other examples of personal aggrandizement by self-proclaimed “defenders” of labor.

But it isn’t just the Left’s fat-cats who have feathered their own nests while denigrating the Working Class with arrogantly contemptuous scorn: the entire protected, privileged “liberal” elitist Establishment has responded with a very illiberal outrage that their protected, privileged skims and scams might be endangered by an uprising of the loathed and ridiculed Working Class that they reckoned would remain safely cowed and conned.

Big Oil Is Gaming the System to Raise Domestic U.S. Prices

Bloomberg notes:
Completion of the entire [Keystone] pipeline would raise prices at the pump in the Midwest and Rocky Mountains 10 to 20 cents a gallon, Verleger, the Colorado consultant, said in an e-mail message. The higher crude prices also would erase the discount enjoyed by cities including Chicago, Cheyenne and Denver, Verleger said.

CNN Money reports:
Gas prices might go up, not down: Right now, a lot of oil being produced in Canada and North Dakota has trouble reaching the refineries and terminals on the Gulf. Since that supply can’t be sold abroad, it reduces the competition for it to Midwest refineries that can pay lower prices to get it.

Giving the Canadian oil access to the Gulf means the glut in the Midwest goes away, making it more expensive for the region.

Tyson Slocum – Director of Public Citizens’ Energy Program – explains:

How does bringing in more oil supply result in higher gas prices, you ask? Let me walk you through the facts. A combination of record domestic oil production and anemic domestic demand has resulted in large stockpiles of crude oil in the U.S. In particular, supplies of crude in the critical area of Cushing, OK increased more than 150% from 2004 to early 2011 (compared to a 40% rise for the country as a whole). Segments of the oil industry want to import additional supplies of crude from Canada, bypass the surplus crude stockpiles in Oklahoma in an effort to refine this Canadian imported oil into gasoline in the Gulf Coast with the goal of increasing gasoline exports to Latin America and other foreign markets.
