FLUORIDE LOWERS IQ & CAUSE OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS

FLUORIDE LOWERS IQ & CAUSE OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS, said Government agencies & Top University studies:

INTRODUCTION by Hugo Adan. Feb 10, 2014

According to  National Toxicology Program NTP on Fluoride,  Sodium fluoride is a white, crystalline, water-soluble powder used in municipal water fluoridation systems, in various dental products, and in a variety of industrial applications. http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/?objectid=0709411C-E355-A12E-DBB6666806CB8DB2  According to Medical News Today,  Fluoride is found naturally in soil, water, foods, and several minerals.  [ http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/154164.php ]. Fluoride is also synthesized in laboratories. Synthesized fluoride is commonly added to drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwashes and various chemical products. Why is fluoride added to drinking water? It is added because they say it reduces the prevalence of tooth decay in the local population. However, most European countries do not have water fluoridation. They did not find incidences of dental cavities increas as result of drinking tap water, then they stopped adding fluoride to their drinking water. This revelation was a hot issue since the 1990s in the US, but now the effects of Fluoride on the brain, especially on children, are very shocking. Read it:

FLUORIDE LOWERS CHILDREN’S INTELLIGENCE BY 7 IQ POINTS, said  a Harvard Study
Posted on February 10, 2014 by WashingtonsBlog  [here only extracts]

The Harvard School for Public Health reports:
In a meta-analysis, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and China Medical University in Shenyang for the first time combined 27 studies and found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children. Based on the findings, the authors say that this risk should not be ignored, and that more research on fluoride’s impact on the developing brain is warranted.

The study [click for abstract] said: The average loss in IQ was reported as a standardized weighted mean difference of 0.45, which would be approximately equivalent to seven IQ points for commonly used IQ scores with a standard deviation of 15.   Some studies suggested that even slightly increased fluoride exposure could be toxic to the brain. Thus, children in high-fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low-fluoride areas. The children studied were up to 14 years of age, but the investigators speculate that any toxic effect on brain development may have happened earlier, and that the brain may not be fully capable of compensating for the toxicity.

Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” Grandjean says. “The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”

In the following video interviewing a Nobel laureate in medicine, makes the case of the damage fluoride can cause to our brains:

Numerous other government reports have shown fluoride’s adverse impacts on intelligence: “[A] 2006 National Academy of Science [report ] reviews the scientific studies which have been performed on fluoride, and concludes: “It is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain and the body by direct and indirect means. (bottom of page 222).

Indeed, studies from around the world continue to find that exposure to sodium fluoride – especially in the very young – lowers IQ. See this and this. The same is true for rats exposed to fluoride. See this and this. And see the studies listed here.

Dr. Vyvyan Howard said in a 2008 Canadian television interview  that studies done in several countries show that children’s IQ are likely to be lower in high natural water fluoride areas. He said [it is so] because fluoride is known to affect the thyroid hormone which affects intelligence and fluoride is also a known neuro-toxicant. Such studies have not been conducted in countries that artificially fluoridate the water such as the US, UK and Canada, but should be, he said.

And as the International Business Times noted last month on the newest Chinese study on fluoride: “Exposure to fluoride may lower children’s intelligence, says a study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a publication of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Fluoride is added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies.

About 28 percent of the children in the low-fluoride area scored as bright, normal or higher intelligence compared to only 8 percent in the “high” fluoride area of Wamaio.
In the high-fluoride city, 15 percent had scores indicating mental retardation and only 6 percent in the low-fluoride city. The authors of the study eliminated both lead exposure and iodine deficiency as possible causes for the lowered IQs.

One scientist – Jennifer Lukealleged in a 2001 scientific article that fluoride accumulates in the brain (specifically, in the structure of the pineal gland) more than it accumulates in our bones. In other words, she implies that fluoride may accumulate more in the brain than in the teeth, doing more harm than good (here’s Luke’s 1997 PhD dissertation on the topic.).  The 2006 National Academy of Sciences report corroborates some of Luke’s allegations.

Donald Miller – cardiac surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington – alleges: “Fluoride … inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in the brain, which is involved in transmitting signals along nerve cells.”  [He adds:] Fluoride also damages the brain, both directly and indirectly. Rats given fluoridated water at a dose of 4 ppm develop symptoms resembling attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. High concentrations of fluoride accumulate in the pineal gland, which produces serotonin and melatonin.

People with Alzheimer’s disease have high levels of aluminum in their brains. Fluoride combines with aluminum in drinking water and takes it through the blood-brain barrier into the brain. Dr. Russell Blaylock, MD, a neurosurgeon, spells out in chilling detail the danger fluoride poses to one’s brain and health in general in his book Health and Nutrition Secrets that can Save Your Life (2002).

Time Magazine notes:  What has also changed is how much toxicologists know about the harmful effects of fluoride compounds. Ingested in high doses, fluoride is indisputably toxic; it was once commonly used in rat poison. Hydrogen fluoride is regulated as a hazardous pollutant in emissions from chemical plants and has been linked to respiratory illness. Even in toothpaste, sodium fluoride is a health concern. In 1997 the Food and Drug Administration toughened the warning on every tube to read, “If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a poison-control center right away.”

ABC News from Raleigh-Durham reports: “Study after study dating back to the 80s from respected academic and scientific institutions that connect fluoride to health dangers. Some of the studies were funded by the government. They  suggest fluoride can be linked to brain, blood and bone deficiencies in humans.

The I-Team discovered most western countries do not fluoridate their water. Dental records kept by the World Health Organization show tooth decay in those countries has declined at the same rate as here in the United States – where we do fluoridate our water.  Indeed, an overwhelming number of scientific studies conclude that cavity levels are falling worldwide … even in countries which don’t fluoridate water.  Specifically, the scientific literature shows that – when fluoridation of water supplies is stopped – cavities do not increase (but may in some cases actually decrease).  See this, this, this, this, this and this.

No wonder more and more countries are stopping fluoridation.

In fact, many prominent leaders of the pro-water fluoridation movement have recently admitted publicly that they were wrong. That includes:

DEBATE IN THE 1990S:
A- IN FAVOR OF FLUORIDE

According to the National Health Service, fluoride disrupts the process of tooth decay by:
  • altering the structure of the developing enamel so that it is more resistant to acid attack. These structural changes occur as a child's enamel develops (before he/she is seven years old).
  • providing an environment where better quality enamel is formed, which is much more resistant to acid attack
  • reducing the bacteria's (bacteria in plaque) ability to produce acid, a major cause of tooth decay

Similar view is shared by Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation : Fluoridated water has fluoride at a level that is effective for preventing cavities; this can occur naturally or by adding fluoride. Defluoridation is needed when the naturally occurring fluoride level exceeds recommended limits. A 1994 World Health Organization expert committee suggested a level of fluoride from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/L (milligrams per litre), depending on climate. Bottled water typically has unknown fluoride levels, and some domestic water filters remove some or all fluoride. Dental caries remain a major public health concern in most industrialized countries, affecting 60–90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults. Water fluoridation prevents cavities in both children and adults.

“Sodium fluoride in drinking water or taken as a supplement does not usually cause any side effects. However, taking an overdose of fluoride may cause serious problems. Stop taking this medicine and get emergency help immediately if any of the following effects occur”:  [Mayo clinic cut info on emergency cases: did not mention side-negative effects]. However,  in a recent article they recognize that the uses of fluoride is associated to renal deseases and severe infection in older people. http://fluoridealert.org/studies/mayo-clinic/

B- AGAINST FLUORIDE

According to Lemire clinic:  http://www.lemireclinic.com/10-facts-about-fluoride/ In 10 Facts about Fluoride, April 26, 2012  [they mention only five] the adverse effects from fluoride ingestion are:

1- Risk of brain damage. According to the National Research Council (NRC), fluoride can damage the brain. Animal studies conducted in the 1990s by EPA scientists found dementia-like effects at the same concentration (1 ppm) used to fluoridate water, while human studies have found adverse effects on IQ at levels as low as 0.9 ppm among children with nutrient deficiencies, and 1.8 ppm among children with adequate nutrient intake. (7-10)

2- Risk of damage to the thyroid gland. According to the NRC, fluoride is an “endocrine disrupter.” Most notably, the NRC has warned that doses of fluoride (0.01-0.03 mg/kg/day) achievable by drinking fluoridated water, may reduce the function of the thyroid among individuals with low-iodine intake. Reduction of thyroid activity can lead to loss of mental acuity, depression and weight gain (11)

3- Risk to damage bones. According to the NRC, fluoride can diminish bone strength and increase the risk for bone fracture. While the NRC was unable to determine what level of fluoride is safe for bones, it noted that the best available information suggests that fracture risk may be increased at levels as low 1.5 ppm, which is only slightly higher than the concentration (0.7-1.2 ppm) added to water for fluoridation. (12)

4- Risk for bone cancer. Animal and human studies – including a recent study from a team of Harvard scientists – have found a connection between fluoride and a serious form of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) in males under the age of 20. The connection between fluoride and osteosarcoma has been described by the National Toxicology Program as “biologically plausible.” Up to half of adolescents who develop osteosarcoma die within a few years of diagnosis. (13-16)

5- Risk to kidney patients. People with kidney disease have a heightened susceptibility to fluoride toxicity. The heightened risk stems from an impaired ability to excrete fluoride from the body. As a result, toxic levels of fluoride can accumulate in the bones, intensify the toxicity of aluminum build-up, and cause or exacerbate a painful bone disease known as renal osteodystrophy. (17-19)

In general we can say that the new from  http://www.washingtonsblog.com /   is no new, but the focus on brain damaged caused  by Fluoride is much more consistent.

Regarding cancer as effect of  ingesting Fluoride, the National Toxicology Program NTP on Fluoride http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/?objectid=0709411C-E355-A12E-DBB6666806CB8DB2  conducted experiments on rats in the 1990s and the effects were positive. Their Conclusions: “Under the conditions of these 2-yeardosed water studies, there was equivocal evidence of carcinogenic activity of sodium fluoride in male F344/N rats”.  Equivocal means that is not conclusive, this is might be due to the fact that NTP is a Government agency, so their research is always affected by the   influence and pressure of lobbies from the big Pharma corporation.

In Natural News on Fluoride It is said that a new study published in the journal, Food Research International, has revealed that millions of people across the globe are at serious risk of developing tooth decay, bone loss, and other serious health conditions as a result of over-exposure to fluoride. http://www.naturalnews.com/041492_fluoride_tea_bags_side_effects.html

They also said that “many inexpensive, store brand black and green teas, contain dangerously high levels of fluoride that far exceed even the government's over-inflated maximums for fluoride exposure”. Based on an analysis of 38 different tea brands, Ph.D. student Laura Chan and her colleagues from the University of Derby found that fluoride levels averaged around six milligrams per liter (mg/l) in store brand tea. The worst offenders were Asda Smartprice, Tesco Value, Morrisons Value, Sainsbury's Basics, and Waitrose Essential -- in the U.S.

FLUORIDE IN PESTICIDE CHEMICALS.  In the same source http://www.naturalnews.com the fluoride expert Jeff Green, said that many non-organic foods contain extremely high levels of fluoride because of the pesticide chemicals sprayed on them -- and in some cases, non-organic produce contains up to 180 times the amount of fluoride found in tap water.

Fluoride-based pesticide chemicals such as cryolite (sodium hexafluoroaluminate) are commonly used on non-organic food crops because they are highly effective at both killing pests and protecting crops against pest damage. "Cryolite is actually sodium aluminum fluoride ... this sodium aluminum fluoride is especially effective at killing bugs," says Green. "It's also very sticky, so when they spray it, it's more likely to stick on your produce, unless you're ... really working at trying to get it off of it."

"The common pesticide cryolite (sodium aluminum fluoride containing both aluminum and fluoride) is found at alarmingly high rates in foods that easily absorb chemicals, such as potato skins, white grapes and strawberries."
