ECONOMICS
The great fantasy that many are depending on to solve the
decline of paid work is taxing the robots and software that ate all the jobs.
These taxes are supposed to pay for the Universal Basic Income that
everyone will enjoy once work is automated and jobs become scarce. The problem
with the fantasy is that profits only flow to what's scarce, and as the tools
of automation are commoditized, they will no longer be scarce.
When new productivity tools were scarce (unique to
American factories and workplaces) and required a growing labor force,
productivity growth translated into higher wages. But when productivity growth
relied on financial capital and processes and higher-level technical/managerial
skills, the gains flowed only to those who owned these processes and skills:
generally speaking, the wealthy owners of productive capital and the highly
educated technocrat/managerial class (the top 5% and to a lesser degree, the
top 20%.)
All of which is to say the model of paying wages for
profitable work (or collecting taxes from profits and profitable work to pay
government workers) is broken: not slightly broken, but fundamentally broken.
We need a new economic model that recognizes the value of
useful work that isn't necessarily profitable, an economic system that creates
money to pay those doing useful work at the bottom of the pyramid rather that
creating money only for banks, corporations and financiers at the very top of
the pyramid.

Following April's
gas-price-surge-driven spike in retail sales (by the most in 13 months),
May and June have seen various sections of the retailing world collapse, as
we detailed here, and growth slowed acordingly with a 0.5% rise MoM (though
beating expectations of a 0.3% rise). Before everyone breaks out the champagne
for the new recovery, however, we note that the biggest contributor to May's
gains was a 2.1% jump in gasoline station spending - which is
"unequivocally bad" right?

On the day in which the government reported modestly
stronger than expected retail sales for the month of May, signalling a return
to strength for spending and the US consumer - the driving force behind 70% of
US GDP - a far more ominous statistic was revealed by credit card company
Synchrony Financial, which earlier today announced in a regulatory filing that
it expects write-off rates to climb 20 to 30 basis points over the next 12
months, and will increase reserves for soured loans beginning this quarter.

So here we are. After decades of what essentially could
be called a new “Industrial Revolution” with the advent of computers and the
internet, the US government has managed through its monetary authorities and
through its other policies to decimate savings and leave millions of Americans
financially vulnerable. It has been no accident.

to al-Qaida, Hezbollah, and the Islamic State“.
#2 Mateen’s father has openly expressed support for the
Taliban on YouTube.
#3 Despite those links to terror organizations, Mateen
was allowed to work “as a security
guard at a local courthouse“.
#4 Mateen wasn’t directly hired by the courthouse.
Instead, he was officially an employee of
the largest security services company in the world…
#5 It turns out that this U.S. subsidiary of G4S is a
company that works very closely with “the
Department of Homeland Security, the US Army, and federal and local law
enforcement.”
#6 Mateen’s ex-wife says that he would repeatedly beat her while they
were married.
#7 He started to become radicalized after separating
from his first wife. While they were together, she said that he
didn’t show much interest in religion.
#8 He made pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia in 2011 and 2012.
#9 He claimed to personally know the Boston Marathon
Bombers.
#10 According to the FBI, Mateen has “been on the radar before“,
he was interviewed by them three separate times, and they
conducted a 10 month investigation of his activities in 2013.
#11 He is being described as “unhinged and unstable” by his
former coworkers.
#12 Mateen once declared that he hoped to martyr himself
someday, and the FBI knew all about this.
#13 Despite everything that the federal government knew
about Mateen, he was still permitted to legally buy guns just last week.
#14 In an odd twist, it also turns out that Mateen was a registered Democrat.
#15 A respected Islamic scholar was urging Muslims in
Orlando to “get rid” of homosexuals just
a couple of months before this shooting took place…
#16 Hillary Clinton’s State Department shut down an
investigation of the mosque that Mateen attends because it “unfairly singled out
Muslims“.
#17 Just moments before the attack, Mateen reportedly called 911 to swear his allegiance to
ISIS.
When is it going to finally sink in for our
politically correct politicians that Islamic terror is a major threat?
There are lots of other Omar Mateens out there. And
as radical Islam continues to spread both inside and outside this country, the
threat is only going to get a lot worse.

This
weekend saw the 'upper/middle-class' Telegraph newspaper break ranks with the
British establishment and suggest Brexit is the way to go. Today, we see
more mainstream media mutiny as the 'working-class' Sun newspaper (owned by
Murdoch and the largest UK newspaper) "urges everyone to vote Leave. We
must set ourselves free from dictatorial Brussels," in the looming EU
Referendum. While polls have been steadily increasing in Brexit likelihood,
many have clung to the hope that bookies odds remained lower... until now, as
Ladbrokes just reported Brexit chances hit an all-time high of 43%.

Despite the biggest MoM jump in business sales since February
2014 (up 0.9% MoM driven by a 3.2% surge in auto sales), the crucial
inventory-to-sales ratio remains stubbornly high in recession territory.
Year-over-year, inventories have risen 1.0% while sales have tumbled 1.3%
(massively helped by a dramatic seasonal adjustment from -2.9% actual YoY drop
in sales).
Just day after their
mysterious annual meeting in Dresden, it appears The Bilderberg Group's
gravest concern is Brexit. While everything from The
Middle East to Donald Trump was on the agenda, the remarks this week from
AXA CEO (and Chairman of The Bilderberg Group) Henri de Castries that there is
an "extremely high" probability that the U.K. will vote to leave
the European Union and investors will face “a true landscape of
uncertainties," suggest the establishment is concerned.

Oil fell today despite a bullish IEA report cutting its
estimate for oil surplus (despite 2 weeks running of increasing rig counts and
production and builds in gasoline and distillates last week). With crude
inventories down 3 weeks in a row, API's print was expected to come in at
-2.33mm barrels but instead built by 1.16mm barrels, sending oil prices lower.
Cushing stockpiles were expected to drop 600k barrels (despite Genscape's 234k
build estimate) but soared 664k barrels. Gasoline and Distillates both saw the
biggest builds since January.
