Senate Democrats in Illinois are pushing ahead with a new budget
proposal that includes a massive personal and corporate income tax hike and an
expansion of the state's sales tax, after saying they are no longer willing to
wait for a broader deal with Republicans. In all, the package is expected to cost Illinois
taxpayers an incremental $5 billion.

At 11am on Tuesday, the Trump administration
will unveil the deepest cuts to government programs in a generation, proposing
to cut $3.6 trillion in spending over 10 years across all discretionary spending
and non-discretionary spending.
The full proposal,
titled “A New
Foundation for American Greatness,” is expected at 11 a.m.
Eastern. The proposal relies on a mix of cuts to
anti-poverty programs, optimistic economic forecasting and deep cuts to nondefense discretionary funding to meet
its targets. It would not touch Social Security and
Medicare, which Trump promised to leave alone during his campaign.
The
budget would also dramatically shift spending to the
Pentagon from domestic programs. In 2018, the budget would shift $54 billion from nondefense discretionary spending to
defense by enacting major cuts to the State
Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture
and other agencies.

Donald Trump's new budget proposal for fiscal year 2018 requested over one
billion dollar more compared to a previous year for a program to enhance
protection of US allies in Europe.
"The
[fiscal year] 2018 budget request of $4.8 billion for ERI provides
near-term flexibility and responsiveness to the evolving concerns

Every conventional “solution” to
the systemic ills of our economy and society boils down to some version of free
money: Universal Basic Income (UBI) schemes– free money
for everyone, funded by borrowing from future taxpayers (robots, people,
Martians, any fantasy will do); debt jubilees funded by central banks creating
trillions out of thin air, a.k.a. free money, and so on.
Free money is compelling because, well, it’s free, and it solves all
the problems created by burdensome debt and declining incomes for the bottom
95%. Just give every household
$100,000 of free money that must be devoted to reducing interest, then give
every household $20,000 annually for being among the living, and hey, a lot of
problems go away.
But is creating money out of thin
air really truly free? There are two
appealing answers: yes and yes. If the Treasury literally prints money, it’s
almost “free,” and if the Federal Reserve creates money and buys bonds paying
near-zero yields, the money that is borrowed into existence is almost free
because the interest due is so minimal.
The problem, of course, is that
creating free money is not quite the same as creating new wealth.
New wealth is a new gas/oil field that comes online, new cropland that produces
a new source of food, new goods and services, etc.
