"First,
'record levels' of anything are records for a reason. It is where the
point where previous limits were reached. Therefore, when
a ‘record level’ is reached, it is not the beginning, but rather an indication
of the maturity of a cycle. While the media has focused on employment,
record stock market levels, etc. as a sign of an ongoing economic recovery, history suggests caution."
The problem, is these cyclical bull markets are quickly
believed to be the beginning of the next secular multi-decade bull market. However, as discussed previously, this is
currently unlikely the case given the lack of economic dynamics required to
foster such a secular period.
The chart below brings this idea of reversion into a bit
clearer focus. I have overlaid the 3-year average annual real return of
the S&P 500 against the inflation-adjusted price index itself.
10 – The S&P 500 has
already climbed above year-end targets for well over half of the Wall Street
strategists out there.
As I laid out at the beginning of this year in “The Problem With Forecasts”, even
the most bullish analysts weren’t as optimistic as the market is now.

Retail investors are dribbling
this year's equity rally, JPM calculates, and adds that "in contrast to retail investors, institutional investors appear to
have overall reduced rather than increased their equity exposure YTD."

"It
has been a year since the last 10% US equity market drawdown. We forecast
S&P 500 will peak in 1Q at 2400 and end the year at 2300. Given extremely
low volatility, investors should replace long equity positions with calls or
sell unlikely upside to fund protection."

"...
end of day rebalancing means that equity trading becomes even more concentrated
at the end of the day as passive funds grow. Passive funds typically rebalance
at the end of the day because transacting at the closing price better aligns
the performance of passive funds to the performance of the index they
track."

Another
day, another symbolic 'mutiny' has broken out against president Trump in the US
intel community, this time involving the Department of Homeland Security.

After
vowing to defy Trump's immigration executive order and "hire 10,000
refugees", Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz quickly found out the hard
way that while most adult-aged Americans can agree that they like coffee, roughly
50% disagree.

Having surpassed gun homicides for the first time in
2015, the epidemic of heroin and opioid related deaths in the US
continues to grow. Amid the dismal failure of the 'war on drugs', it seems US lawmakers are finally waking up to reality, and are pressing the nation’s drug czar for more data
on the dangerous synthetic opioid fentanyl, including how it is
trafficked and how many people it has killed, in the latest effort to thwart a
spiraling drug crisis.

WORLD ISSUES and ME
Bitcoin
is a primary means of capital flight out of China. How long will that last? Here’s one key
thought on bitcoin from the article: “OK Coin is among
cryptocurrency exchanges that has recently taken steps to halt bitcoin
withdrawals amid efforts to clamp down on capital outflows.” When China launches its own cryptocurrency,
will it ban Bitcoin transactions? If so, what happens to the price of
Bitcoin?
