[NOTA by Haz. Lo incorrecto de este análisis es separar la crisis ideológica
de la crisis de un modelo de dominación imperialista, el modelo neoliberal.
Sin duda hay relativa independencia de lo ideológico frente a lo económico,
pero tal relativismo no puede ser exagerado al punto de convertirlo en causa
y justificación de lo que se quiere evitar: la inacción y el vacío de propuestas
concretas (o alternativas) al problema. La tiranía, violencia y corrupción no
son efecto del escepticismo y cinismo. La causa de la debacle imperial menos
tiene su causa en tales ideologías. Estas son su efecto y no solo un efecto
consentido sino sobre todo un efecto calculado y manipulado por quienes tienen
control de los aparatos ideologicos de Estado (la TV prensa digital) los que se
enriquecen con tal modelo (una minoría cada vez mas reducida). Es la mayoría
hoy desarmada en términos ideológicos y de auto-defensa armada lo que hay
que superar y a esto no contribuye el idealismo objetivo, reduccionista y diría
extra-cínico (adornado con pasajes históricos) de quienes solo se quedan en la
cascara ideológica del problema]

ALAI AMLATINA, 30/08/2011.- El escepticismo parece un buen refugio en
tiempos en que ya se decretó el fin de las utopías, el fin del
socialismo e incluso el fin de la historia. Es más cómodo decir que no
se cree en nada, que todo es igual, que nada merece la pena. El
socialismo habría devenido en tiranía, la política en corrupción, los
ideales en intereses. La naturaleza humana sería esencialmente mala:
egoísta, violenta, propensa a la corrupción.
En ese escenario, solo restaría no creer en nada, por lo que es
indispensable descalificar todo, adherir a cambalache: nada es mejor,
todo es igual. Ejercer el escepticismo significa tratar de afirmar que
ninguna alternativa es posible, ninguna tiene credibilidad. Unas son
pésimas, otras imposibles. Algunos medios, como ya fue dicho, son
máquinas de destruir reputaciones. Porque si alguien es respetable, si
alguna alternativa demuestra que puede conquistar apoyos y protagonizar
procesos de mejoría efectiva de la realidad, el escepticismo no se
justificaría.
En realidad el escepticismo se revela, rápidamente, en la realidad, ser
un cinismo, tanto el uno como el otro, una justificación para la
inercia, para dejar que todo continúe como está. Aún más que el
escepticismo-cinismo está al servicio de los poderes dominantes, que
acostumbran emplear esos otavinhos (1) dándoles espacio y empleo.
Su discurso es que el mundo está cada vez peor, al borde de la
catástrofe ecológica -todo se desmorona- y otros cataclismos. Promueven
esa visión pesimista, incitan al escepticismo y a sumarse a la inercia,
que permite que los poderosos sigan dominando, los explotadores sigan
explotando, los engañadores –como ellos– sigan engañando.
Por más que digan que todo está peor, que el siglo pasado fue un horror
–como si el mundo estuviera mejor en el siglo XIX-, que nada merece la
pena, no pueden analizar la realidad en concreto. Para no ir más lejos,
basta contemplar América Latina, tema sobre el cual la ignorancia de esa
gente es especialmente acentuada. Imposible no considerar que el siglo
XX fue el más importante de su historia, el primero en que la región
comenzó a ser protagonista de su historia. De economías agro
exportadoras, se avanzó a economías industrializadas en varios países, a
la urbanización, a la construcción de sistemas públicos de educación y
de salud, al desarrollo del movimiento obrero y de los derechos de los
trabajadores.
Pero bastaría concentrarnos en el periodo reciente, en el mundo actual,
para darnos cuenta de que las sociedades latinoamericanas –el continente
más desigual del mundo– o por lo menos la mayoría de ellas, avanzaron
mucho en la superación de las desigualdades y de la miseria. Aún más en
contraste con los países del centro del capitalismo, referencia central
para los escéptico-cínicos, que giran en falso en torno a políticas que
América Latina ya superó.
Las poblaciones de Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, están viviendo mejor que
antes de los gobiernos de Hugo Chávez, Evo Morales y Rafael Correa. La
Argentina de los Kirchner está mejor que la de Menem. El Brasil de Lula
y de Dilma está mejor que el de Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
Pero el escepticismo-cinismo desconoce la realidad concreta, no conoce
la historia. Es pura ideología, estado de ánimo, que da cabida a los
poderosos, partido que escogieron, al optar por dejar el mundo como
está. Trata de difundir sentimientos de angustia frente a los problemas
del mundo, pero es solo un cebo para transmitir mejor su compromiso para
que el mundo no cambie, continúe igual. Incluso porque la vida está bien
buena para ellos que comen de la mano de los ricos y poderosos.
Ser optimista no es desconocer los graves problemas de todo orden que
vive el mundo, no porque la naturaleza humana sea mala por esencia, sino
porque vivimos en un sistema centrado en el lucro y no en las
necesidades humanas: el capitalismo, en su fase neoliberal. Desconocer
las raíces históricas de los problemas, no comprender que es un sistema
construido históricamente y que, por lo tanto, puede ser desconstruido,
que tuvo un comienzo, tiene un punto medio y puede tener un final. Que
la historia humana es siempre un proceso abierto a alternativas y que
triunfan aquellas que logran superar ese escepticismo-cinismo que lleva
agua a su molino para dejar todo como está, apuntando a la acción
consciente, organizada, solidaria de los hombres y mujeres concretamente

August 29, 2011 "Information Clearing House" -- The assault on Libya by a coalition of mostly Western nations begs the question: Is colonialism making some sort of a comeback? While their economies are collapsing in slow motion, it is hard to picture Western countries prospecting for real estate across the globe, as they did 300 years ago. But as unreal as it seems, it is happening.
Few will shed tears for Gaddafi because it was his impetuosity that cost Libya its freedom; of more concern is the fact that after 40 years the country's considerable oil wealth has reverted to Western control. Iraqi oil too is flowing west. Iran could very well be the next target of American and British warplanes.
Ironically, it is when the West is weak that the emergent nations of Asia and Africa have reason to worry. Colonialism 2.0 isn't just a catchphrase; it is simple economics: the wealthy will always need to be vigilant against the desperate.
If you think colonization happened when the East was decadent and the West was rising or that India and China neglected their militaries and ignored the foreign threats lurking at their shores, you couldn't be more wrong. Both countries had very powerful armies and naval flotillas led by able commanders.
MILITARY EDGE
In the early 1700's, India's legendary Admiral of the Fleet, Kanhoji Angre, routed the British, Dutch and Portuguese navies on the high seas. For 33 years until his death in 1729, the Indian remained undefeated. The British were so pissed they called him a pirate.
Indian ships of that time were so advanced in design and durability that the British inducted them into their fleet. In the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Horatio Nelson's flagship HMS Victory was an Indian built vessel.
According to the Indian Navy's website, "This so agitated British shipbuilders on the River Thames that they protested against the use of Indian built ships to carry trade from England. Consequently, active measures were adopted to cripple the Indian shipbuilding industries."
The southern Indian kingdom of Mysore was the first in modern history to use rockets in war, and they used it with deadly effect against the British in the Battle of Guntur in 1780. The literally shell-shocked British army fled from the battlefield. A few unexploded rockets were later shipped to the Royal Arsenal in London, where William Congreve, the British weapons expert, reverse engineered them to launch modern rocketry in Europe.
Most Indian rulers also possessed keen geopolitical awareness. For instance, they did not allow European merchants to keep garrisons or conduct inland trade. When Thomas Roe, the British monarch's emissary, landed in western India in 1616, he was made to wait a year before the Indian emperor granted him an audience. Three years later, Roe despite many entreaties and considerable bowing before the grandees at Delhi, returned without a trade treaty because the emperor saw no point in trading with a country that had not one product or commodity to offer India.
THIN END OF THE WEDGE
However, one slip-up by a weak emperor let in the hordes. A hundred years after Roe's exit, an English embassy had a stroke of luck when one of its members, William Hamilton, a physician of questionable medical skills, managed to relieve the figurehead emperor of severe pain in his groin. The emperor gratefully signed a decree giving the British inland trading rights, customs duty exemptions, and the right to keep a garrison. The rest as they say is history.
According to professor Rajesh Kochhar, emeritus scientist at the Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Chandigarh, "These exemptions gave the English traders commercial advantages not only over other European companies but also over Indian traders. More importantly, the various official orders granting trade concessions gave the British a cause to defend, with military strength if needed." Does that sound familiar?
RETURN OF THE EAST
Today, the east is rising once again. Economists are stunned by the unprecedented flow of manufacturing, finance and wealth to the east. Magid Igbaria, former professor of management information systems at Tel Aviv University, wrote in The Virtual Workplace: "For all but the last 500 years of human history, the world's wealth measured in human capital and in goods was concentrated in Asia. During the past five centuries, the world's wealth has been concentrated in the West. This era is coming to an end. Today, the great concentrations of human capital, financial power, manufacturing power, and informated power are once again accumulating in the East."
Indeed, in 30 years India is predicted to overtake the US, even though it is only one-fourteenth the size of the US economy now. That is an incredible rate of wealth accretion.
The question is will the US and Europe simply watch the world go past? On the contrary, there is a concerted effort by a US-led coalition to stop this trend. Here are a few ways the West is trying to stay on top:
BASE INSTINCTS: Today the US-led coalition has over 750 military bases across the globe. Despite the huge costs, this extension of military power is essential to their hegemony. A slew of European nationalities has followed the American military in its misadventures around the world. No empire in history has attempted such sweeping control. In Pliny's days the Roman, Indian and Chinese empires co-existed in their spheres of influence and never attempted to destabilise each other. The good old days.
DIVIDE AND RULE: The Americans are playing up India as a major "regional" power allied with the West. This is not only insulting to the Indians (why should India only be a regional power?), it also scares the hell out of the Chinese. The communists in Beijing, therefore, come out with kneejerk statements calling for India's breakup, which in turn makes the Indians consider China a natural enemy. Amazingly, in the past 2500 years, China and India never had even a skirmish, until the British arrived on the scene and planted the seeds of border problems.
CLIMATE BOGEY: After polluting the environment for more than a century, the West now wants India and China to reduce emissions. It's a thinly disguised attempt to slow these rapidly growing economies. India's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has done an about turn and now his views seem to align with Western interests, which led to key Indian negotiators quitting in disgust. Newsweek, the Pentagon mouthpiece masquerading as journalism, was sufficiently pleased with Ramesh to label him the "global rock star of climate change".
DOLLAR GAMBIT: Wouldn't you feel almighty if you obtained a license to print US dollars off your home printer? While the rest of the world has to earn a living the hard way, the Americans just print dollars to pay their bills. Need a few hundred billion dollars to pay for the war in Iraq? Want to buy Venezuelan oil? Russian titanium? No problem. The US mint cranks the lever and billions of dollars start rolling off the presses. In fact, in recent years even that pretense has been given the heave-ho - now trillions of dollars are generated electronically in the accounts of the US Federal Reserves. It's as simple as that.
There is another way the dollar trade works against the interests of non-Western countries. Countries like China and Russia invest their earnings in US treasury bonds; these dollars are used by the Americans to maintain their global military supremacy, build increasingly modern weapons, and reward their allies with cash, weapons, and security umbrellas.
WTO: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has called it "archaic, undemocratic and inflexible" and dominated by a small group of developed countries which indulge in protectionism. One of its aims is to pry open the agricultural markets of Asia, including India. Incidentally, India has the highest number of farmer suicides in the world.
NIXING NUCLEAR TECH: The 11th commandment: Thou shall not acquire nuclear technology. Indian and Japanese nuclear scientists perfected the fast breeder reactor (which generates more nuclear fuel than it uses) so they never have to look outside for hard-to-get uranium). However, most likely under US pressure, both nations have quietly shelved their technologies.
SPACE CRUNCH: America's space ambitions are currently grounded because of deep cuts. India has the world's largest number (177) of satellites in space. NASA is aware of it; it is looking at joint ventures with the Indian Space Research Organisation which has reliable rockets and something like 20,000 engineers and scientists. Few are aware that during the 1990s, India requested the Russians for a role in the International Space Station, but the Americans said no. Now NASA wants a free ride on Indian rockets, and India's feckless politicians are happy to oblige.
In the first era of colonialism, the then dominant Eastern nations opened up their economies and territories to comparatively backward Western nations over a span of several decades, finally ending up as their colonies. Under the guise of globalization and 'free' trade, Colonialism 2.0 could happen in much the same way.

No es nada nuevo para las personas que apoyan el Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional descubrir que los intelectuales carecen de solidez moral e intelectual. Es bien conocida la historia de la migración de intelectuales sandinistas hacia posiciones alineadas con los cipayos nacionales y regionales de los poderes de la OTAN. No es sorprendente tampoco entonces descubrir que en relación a la criminal agresión contra Libia destacadas figuras han traicionado principios fundamentales, tanto morales como intelectuales.
El artículo de Atilio Borón, ¿“Libia: Sangre, sudor y lágrimas”? (1) confirma la tendencia de otros intelectuales destacados como Ignacio Ramonet, Samir Amin o Immanuel Wallerstein de analizar los acontecimientos en Libia tendenciosa y ahistóricamente para justificar prejuicios a la vez vulgares y pretenciosos. En sus escritos sobre Libia todos estos escritores demuestran dos cosas fundamentales - comparten la versión imperialista de los sucesos en Libia y escriben como si fuera apropiado en este momento pretender a algún tipo de lucha anti-imperialista teórica y moralmente superior.
El conocimiento histórico depende de diferentes tipos de evidencia. Hay que decidir qué estatura y relevancia se debe de asignar a las diferentes evidencias en existencia. Están las evidencias que indican lo que los actores pensaban y creían en determinadas situaciones – evidencias que deberían ser sujetas a evaluación, valoración e interpretación.
Hay evidencias más concretas, como documentos oficiales, registros de datos, archivos de estadísticas, etcétera. También, por ejemplo, están las relaciones cronológicas, las correlaciones de fuerza y las relaciones de poder. Para elucidar de una manera acertada lo que pasó de toda esta confusa masa de hechos y testimonios y evidencias, habrá que hacer las preguntas apropiadas.
Existe bastante consenso sobre este tipo de procedimientos a seguir para entender un acontecimiento o proceso histórico. Sin embargo, con respecto a Libia, intelectuales como Atilio Borón escriben pasando por alto los más elementales cuidados a la hora de evaluar la evidencia histórica. Un ejemplo de esto es lo siguiente:
“El exilio (para Muammar Ghaddafi) es altamente improbable: no tiene quien lo reciba y, además, su inmensa fortuna, depositada en bancos de Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Francia e Italia está bloqueada.” ¿Acaso Borón ha estudiado en detalle las cuentas bancarias de Muammar Ghaddafi? Es poco probable. En verdad, es sumamente improbable. Bien podría ser el caso. Pero Borón no lo sabe. Tampoco sabe Atilio Borón que Muammar Ghaddafi “no tiene quien lo reciba”.
Aparte de estos criterios vulgares, Atilio Borón emite juicios que se contradicen a sí mismos: “...Gadafi, atónito ante la ingratitud de aquellos de quienes se había convertido en obediente peón.” No sabemos – y Atilio Borón tampoco sabe - si Muammar Ghaddafi se quedó atónito en algún momento frente al actuar de sus enemigos. Por otro lado, si Muammar Ghaddafi fuera un obediente peón, no estarían los poderes de la OTAN atacando a Libia, no habría necesidad.
Más aún, Borón acusa a Ghaddaffi de haber tenido “relaciones carnales” con las potencias imperialistas, como si se tratase de uno más de los Ménem y los De La Rua de la Argentina de la Pizza con Champagne. Aparte de toda la evidencia que contradice esta tesis, y de lo caricaturesco de esta descripción, lo que los críticos de las medidas libias para romper con el brutal bloqueo al que fue sometido el país norafricano entre fines de los 80s e inicios del nuevo siglo omiten es alguna propuesta alternativa sobre el curso “verdaderamente revolucionario” a seguir por Libia en esas condiciones.
Borón intenta salir de esta contradicción manipulando la burda propaganda del mismo imperio que dice rechazar. Dejamos a un lado su muy cuestionable suposición de que ha habido una revolución en Egipto que verdaderamente haya logrado cambiar de manera significativa esa sociedad. Borón escribe: “En Libia (los poderes de la OTAN) tuvieron la ocasión de reparar ese mal paso, facilitado por la brutal represión que Gadafi descargó en las primeras semanas de la revuelta.”
Esta es pura propaganda imperial. Ni Atilio Borón ni nadie ha establecido con claridad qué pasó en el mes de febrero en Libia. Lo que sí se sabe es que hubo una insurrección armada mezclada con un golpe de estado provocado en gran medida por grupos aliados de y patrocinados por los gobiernos de la OTAN. De esa realidad hay bastante información, ya que los actores de esa insurrección-golpe ya están claramente identificados – entre ellos traidores del gobierno libio, combatientes del Islamic Fighting Group, militantes del Libyan Democratic Party y simpatizantes de la monarquía.
Esos mismos actores han dado pruebas de su accionar criminal y su desprecio por la vida de ese pueblo al que dicen querer liberar, las que a estas alturas han sido documentadas en informes de varias organizaciones internacionales desde ópticas ideológicas e intereses muy contradictorios.
Pero, sin detenerse en ese tipo de consideraciones, Borón sigue acto seguido con que “Esto ofreció el pretexto que estaban buscando para desencadenar la no menos brutal intervención militar de la OTAN.” Obviamos lo más probable -que la mano de la OTAN estuvo detrás (y metida dentro) de la insurreción-golpe, meses antes de que ésta fuera puesta en práctica en febrero de este año.
Aquí Atilio Borón implica claramente que no hay ninguna diferencia entre la fuerza desplegada por el gobierno libio en autodefensa contra un golpe-insurrección y la masiva intervención contra Libia de 42 países incluyendo las más poderosas fuerzas armadas del mundo.
Escribir así a estas alturas de la destrucción de Libia como país indica el abandono completo de un básico sentido moral.
Más adelante, hay una pista del porqué de esta absurda actitud. Atilio Borón escribe con aprobación de las opiniones de Samir Amin, como si el tema a estas alturas mereciese una discusión teórica. Borón parece compartir el análisis de Amin, de que el petróleo es secundario con respecto al interés de la OTAN por Libia. Nos invita a estar interesados en si el motivo principal de la criminal agresión contra Libia es el de mejorar un poco la ubicación del comando militar estadounidense Africom. Habrá que recordar que Samir Amin ha escrito que Muammar Ghaddafi es un “payaso”.
Parecería más bien que los payasos son Atilio Borón y Samir Amin, por haber perdido completamente la brújula moral. Allí están ellos, ofreciendo sus lectores los mismos dos arquetipos tradicionales de los imperialistas – el carnicero-dictador y el patético-payaso. Estos artefactos de la guerra psicológica de la OTAN se han usado para burlar-satanizar un dirigente que durante muchos meses de dura lucha ha demostrado que tiene el apoyo de la gran mayoría del pueblo de Libia.
Es probable que el aprecio de dirigentes como Nelson Mandela, Hugo Chávez y Daniel Ortgea valga muchísimo más que las opiniones vulgares y abiertamente neocoloniales de Atilio Borón y Samir Amin. Estos escritores llaman a la mente el tropo del poeta W.H.Auden quien se autocrticó como cristiano por haberse identificado, no con el sufrimiento de los actores de la Pasión de Cristo, si no con algún culto señor romano que observaba lo hechos desde fuera.
Hay otro elemento pudendo en perspectivas de los acontecimientos en Libia propuestas como autores como Borón que, como en el caso famoso del rey del cuento, a fuerza de su evidente e impúdica exposición pasan a menudo desapercibidas para el público. Si en Libia se cometieron errores, si Ghadaffi cometió errores: ¿no sería de suprema importancia conocer la visión y el análisis de los propios libios sobre esos errores?
¿No sería, al fin de cuentas, la valoración hecha por esos mismos sujetos, el criterio supremo para juzgar los aciertos y errores de su experiencia histórica? Son ellos, al fin y al cabo, los que ponen los muertos. Y nosotros, que no somos libios, y que nos decimos antiimperialistas, tenemos la responsabilidad de dificultar y si es posible impedir la masacre puesta en marcha por la OTAN. No sólo por el pueblo libio, sino también por nuestros propios pueblos y por nuestros propios muertos.
Hace poco opinamos que los intelectuales de la izquierda internacional tienen poco que ofrecer a los pueblos que luchan por su emancipación del imperialismo occidental. Lo que autores como Atilio Borón y Samir Amin han escrito sobre Libia confirma esa apreciación. Como mucha gente aquí en Nicaragua incluyendo el Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional, nosotros nos solidarizamos con Muammar Ghaddafi y su pueblo en su batalla contra la OTAN.

ATILIO BORÓN Y SAMIR AMIN MISERIA MORAL DE LA INTELECTUALIDAD DE IZQUIERDA

No es nada nuevo para las personas que apoyan el Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional descubrir que los intelectuales carecen de solidez moral e intelectual. Es bien conocida la historia de la migración de intelectuales sandinistas hacia posiciones alineadas con los cipayos nacionales y regionales de los poderes de la OTAN. No es sorprendente tampoco entonces descubrir que en relación a la criminal agresión contra Libia destacadas figuras han traicionado principios fundamentales, tanto morales como intelectuales.
El artículo de Atilio Borón, ¿“Libia: Sangre, sudor y lágrimas”? (1) confirma la tendencia de otros intelectuales destacados como Ignacio Ramonet, Samir Amin o Immanuel Wallerstein de analizar los acontecimientos en Libia tendenciosa y ahistóricamente para justificar prejuicios a la vez vulgares y pretenciosos. En sus escritos sobre Libia todos estos escritores demuestran dos cosas fundamentales - comparten la versión imperialista de los sucesos en Libia y escriben como si fuera apropiado en este momento pretender a algún tipo de lucha anti-imperialista teórica y moralmente superior.
El conocimiento histórico depende de diferentes tipos de evidencia. Hay que decidir qué estatura y relevancia se debe de asignar a las diferentes evidencias en existencia. Están las evidencias que indican lo que los actores pensaban y creían en determinadas situaciones – evidencias que deberían ser sujetas a evaluación, valoración e interpretación.
Hay evidencias más concretas, como documentos oficiales, registros de datos, archivos de estadísticas, etcétera. También, por ejemplo, están las relaciones cronológicas, las correlaciones de fuerza y las relaciones de poder. Para elucidar de una manera acertada lo que pasó de toda esta confusa masa de hechos y testimonios y evidencias, habrá que hacer las preguntas apropiadas.
Existe bastante consenso sobre este tipo de procedimientos a seguir para entender un acontecimiento o proceso histórico. Sin embargo, con respecto a Libia, intelectuales como Atilio Borón escriben pasando por alto los más elementales cuidados a la hora de evaluar la evidencia histórica. Un ejemplo de esto es lo siguiente:
“El exilio (para Muammar Ghaddafi) es altamente improbable: no tiene quien lo reciba y, además, su inmensa fortuna, depositada en bancos de Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Francia e Italia está bloqueada.” ¿Acaso Borón ha estudiado en detalle las cuentas bancarias de Muammar Ghaddafi? Es poco probable. En verdad, es sumamente improbable. Bien podría ser el caso. Pero Borón no lo sabe. Tampoco sabe Atilio Borón que Muammar Ghaddafi “no tiene quien lo reciba”.
Aparte de estos criterios vulgares, Atilio Borón emite juicios que se contradicen a sí mismos: “...Gadafi, atónito ante la ingratitud de aquellos de quienes se había convertido en obediente peón.” No sabemos – y Atilio Borón tampoco sabe - si Muammar Ghaddafi se quedó atónito en algún momento frente al actuar de sus enemigos. Por otro lado, si Muammar Ghaddafi fuera un obediente peón, no estarían los poderes de la OTAN atacando a Libia, no habría necesidad.
Más aún, Borón acusa a Ghaddaffi de haber tenido “relaciones carnales” con las potencias imperialistas, como si se tratase de uno más de los Ménem y los De La Rua de la Argentina de la Pizza con Champagne. Prof. James Petras desde Nueva York, Estados Unidos. Lunes 22 de agosto de 2011 “debemos caracterizar esta guerra contra Libia y su pueblo como uno de los grandes crímenes del nuevo milenio. El hecho es que por 188 días la OTAN, las fuerzas de Inglaterra, Norteamérica y Gran Bretaña están tirando bombas. Son 188 días de terror, de destrucción y a partir de los actos destructivos han tomado terreno sus mercenarios, en la lucha terrestre. Los grandes medios de comunicación en todo el mundo están cantando victoria y celebrando la destrucción.
Solo este fin de semana, según la noticia desde Trípoli, las fuerzas aéreas han matado más de 1300 personas y más de 5000 heridos, más allá de los asesinatos que cometan las fuerzas mercenarias”
CHURY: Audiencia de CX36, estamos para enfocar la realidad internacional y para ello estamos saludando a James Petras que está en contacto desde los Estados Unidos. Petras, buenos días. ¿Cómo estás?
PETRAS: Estamos bien personalmente, pero políticamente un día muy trágico con la ocupación de Trípoli en Libia por parte de las fuerzas de OTAN y sus mercenarios de pago. Es una cosa que debemos discutir hoy, entre otras cosas.
CHURY: Me parece bien. ¿Y hay algún otro tema para hoy?
PETRAS: También podríamos discutir el hecho que en Colombia siguen los asesinatos de los sindicalistas más allá de lo que dice la OEA (Organización de Estados Americanos) sobre el nuevo gobierno de Santos.
Además, considerar el crecimiento de la ultra derecha en Europa y como esto ha atraído sectores de la clase obrera como apoyantes y considerar eso como un problema estratégico. La derecha está atrayendo obreros que antes votaban por la izquierda o centro izquierda.
CHURY: Me parece Petras que tenemos tres temas realmente de un interés público muy grande. Tenemos que arrancar por lo que han sido estas últimas horas en Libia.
PETRAS: Primero debemos caracterizar esta guerra contra Libia y su pueblo como uno de los grandes crímenes del nuevo milenio. El hecho es que por 188 días la OTAN, las fuerzas de Francia, Norteamérica y Gran Bretaña están tirando bombas. Son 188 días de terror, de destrucción y a partir de los actos destructivos han tomado terreno sus mercenarios, en la lucha terrestre.
Los grandes medios de comunicación en todo el mundo están cantando victoria y celebrando la destrucción.
Solo este fin de semana, según la noticia desde Trípoli, las fuerzas aéreas han matado más de 1300 personas y más de 5000 heridos, más allá de los asesinatos que cometan las fuerzas mercenarias.
La OTAN ha tomado el control de Libia a partir de estos mercenarios. Todos los diarios y todos los medios como CNN, BBC, Al Yazira, todos unidos celebrando esta guerra inhumana.También alguna publicación como La Jornada de México tiene fotos de celebraciones de los que apoyan a la OTAN y la guerra. Y no sólo eso, tenemos otra gran tragedia pues en ninguno de los países de Europa o en los EEUU aparece ni una sola protesta.
Mientras están tirando bombas por 188 días, destruyendo un país pacífico y a un Presidente con el mejor programa de bienestar social en toda Africa , ningún grupo pacifista, izquierdista, ha organizado una protesta contra esta masacre.
En Francia más de dos docenas de organizaciones que van desde el Partido Comunista, los trotskistas, al partido autotitulado “anticapitalista” apoyaron a los mercenarios y dicen que van “a vigilar” el proceso del conflicto y no han levantado ni un dedo contra los bombardeos.
Todos los personajes intelectuales franceses que aparecen en los periódicos de izquierda en Brasil, en Uruguay, en Argentina, personajes bien conocidos como figuras marxistas, son parte de este partido que apoya este levantamiento dirigido y financiado por la OTAN.
Esa es una de las grandes tragedias, porque mientras entendemos que el imperialismo y sus medios de comunicación están apoyando este acto criminal, la izquierda -en el mejor de los casos- es silenciosa, sino está sumando a la celebración, supuestamente va contra el tirano. Pero, ¿quién es más tirano? Una fuerza colonial que esta tirando miles y miles, cientos de miles de misiles y bombas por casi 6 meses, o un gobierno que esta legítimo en su país y apoyado por su pueblo antes que entraran en Trípoli. Y ahora, toda la población, hace lo que puede para salvar la vida incluso para evitar persecución y asesinatos ..
Van a terminar con un país destruido, un gobierno colonial, la eliminación de todos los programas sociales de Gadafi -que incluye educación, medicina gratuita, vacaciones para trabajadores.Y miles de emigrantes que son expulsados y muchos mueren en los barcos, tratando de escapar del terrorismo aéreo .Y la marina de la OTAN, abandona cuando ve a estos emigrantes en los barcos medios destruidos. No levantan una mano para ayudarlos, los ignoran.Muchos han muerto. Hay muchos crímenes y muchos puntos que debemos reflexionar sobre esta guerra colonial terrorífica de OTAN.
Si tratas de consultar los medios de comunicación de masa todos están en favor y celebrando esta victoria. Pero lo peor es, que no encuentro un periódico de la izquierda ni en México ni en Europa ni en Argentina, ni en Uruguay que esta en contra de esta guerra colonial.
Si uno consulta por ejemplo los famosos marxistas, todos en su momento condenaron las invasiones a países incluso a países con gobiernos mucho más reaccionarios que Gadafi. Trotsky y toda la izquierda condenaron la invasión de Italia contra Etiopía (1) a pesar que Haile Selassie, el Emperador era un personaje feudal, pero nadie tenía la duda de condenar el acto criminal del fascismo italiano.
Pero en nuestra época toda la izquierda está celebrando esta invasión y los ataques.
Fíjate, 188 días de bombardeo, ¿cómo puede un gobierno sobrevivir tanto tiempo? Sólo porque testimonia el apoyo que tenía Gadafi.
Y otra cosa, la cobardía de los países europeos y de EEUU, sabían que Libia no tenía ninguna defensa antiaérea, sabían que Libia no tenía ninguna defensa contra las fuerzas navales. Por eso aprovecharon la gran vulnerabilidad de un país débil, subdesarrollado, para tirar bombas con impunidad.
Y la izquierda europea y de los EEUU -marxistas, socialistas, comunistas, trotskistas- no organizaron ninguna protesta. Eso es otra cosa para reflexionar sobre la condición de lo que llamamos “izquierda”.
CHURY: En un todo de acuerdo con lo que estás diciendo. Demás esta decirte que anoche faltaba que los informativistas de la televisión uruguaya, cuando mostraban las imágenes de Libia, salieran a dar la vuelta olímpica para festejar lo que estaba pasando en Libia. Pero eso es general, seguramente ocurre lo mismo en otros países.
¿Querés agregar algo más de esto o pasamos al siguiente tema de Colombia?
PETRAS: Las últimas cifras que tenemos desde enero a junio de este año 27 sindicalistas han sido asesinados en Colombia. Esto lo ubica con el mayor índice en el mundo, e incluso hay más sindicalistas asesinados en Colombia que en todos los demás países en el mundo juntos.
En el año 2010, el 55% de todos los sindicalistas asesinados ocurrieron en Colombia. Es decir, en Colombia el gobierno y los paramilitares mataron 49 sindicalistas en 2010. Y ahora, casi la mitad del año, se supera este ritmo de asesinatos.
A pesar de eso, los países de América Latina aceptaron a Colombia como un miembro de la comunidad latinoamericana, votaron, aceptaron a Colombia como un país legítimo. Incluso Venezuela hizo algunos comentarios favorables a Colombia y a Juan Manuel Santos. Pero bajo el gobierno de Santos hay más asesinatos que durante la época de Uribe en el año 2010, 49 en todo el año contra 27 en estos siete meses de 2011.
Es otro comentario sobre como hemos visto la aceptación y casi legitimidad de regímenes que asesinan sindicalistas.
Hoy en día recibimos noticias que dos dirigentes campesinos en Honduras fueran asesinado por las fuerzas públicas en colaboración con los grandes latifundistas. Otro país con el llamado presidente Porfirio Lobos siguen los asesinatos y ahora Honduras esta reconocido como un legítimo miembro de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) .Y los Estados Unidos, “el gran defensor de la democracia, es el principal respaldo para el terrorismo en Colombia y Honduras.
Los mismos asesinos en la Casa Blanca que apoyan el terrorismo contra Libia apoyan el terrorismo en América Latina. Siguen apoyando lo que es la política antipopular, antiobrera, antidemocrática y antiseguridad de la vida. Y eso también pongo en cuestión, si América Latina quiere presentarse como una alternativa de los Estados Unidos y quiere mostrar una cara positiva, una alternativa más humana tiene que romper con esta ilusión de que todos somos demócratas.
Incluso, si uno considera que lo esencial en este momento es que los sindicatos en América Latina deben presentar una alternativa para esta política de asesinato, pero recibe poca publicidad y mucho menos reivindicación en las luchas populares.
Incluso Brasil y Uruguay siguen teniendo tropas en Haití a pesar que en una entrevista hace pocos días con un periodista inglés, el Ministro de Defensa en Brasil, Celso Amorín, dijo que están pensando en retirar las tropas brasileñas de Haití. ¡Están pensándolo, después de más de 15 años de ocupación! Sólo lo están pensando… tras 15 años de ser un mercenario de los Estados Unidos contra el pueblo pobre de Haití.
CHURY: Petras, redondeamos el análisis de hoy con lo que tiene que ver con el factor derecha en Europa.
PETRAS: Si. Hay una cosa muy interesante que es la polarización de la clase obrera. No existe el internacionalismo.
Por ejemplo, en Europa del sur en Grecia, España, Portugal y en algún grado en Italia, los obreros están en la lucha, lucha de clases, huelgas generales, marcha, ocupación de plazas, unificando fuerzas con los desocupados, los pensionistas. Mientras que en el norte de Europa en los países nórdicos como Finlandia,Noruega y en Suiza, Austria, las últimas investigaciones muestran que la ultra derecha está atrayendo sectores importantes de la clase obrera.
En Finlandia por ejemplo los obreros están apoyando un partido de la ultra derecha, lo mismo en Noruega a pesar que recibimos noticias de masacre de los jovenes en el partidos laborista . La segunda fuerza electoral en Noruega es un partido antiinmigrante, islamofóbico y atrayendo a los neo nazis. ¿Cómo explicamos esta división en Europa?
En el sur la crisis económica y las organizaciones de clase siguen teniendo una realidad mientras en el norte, los sindicatos están en un discurso de colaboración con el capitalismo, con los gobernantes pro-imperialistas y han eliminado el concepto de solidaridad de clase.
Encontramos en el norte de Europa una importante lucha pero contra los inmigrantes y un rechazo a las acciones en el sur de Europa porque la clase obrera y los sindicatos, y los socialdemócratas están en contra de apoyar, financiar, los países en el sur. Dicen que los obreros del sur de Europa son flojos, a pesar que los obreros del sur de Europa trabajan más días del año que los noruegos, suecos, suizos.
Tenemos una doble reacción donde condenan a inmigrantes y condenan a los obreros en el sur de Europa y apoyan a la ultra derecha. ¿Por qué? Porque la eliminación de conciencia, la eliminación de la educación política en los sindicatos, genera un ambiente favorable para la ultra derecha penetrar con su veneno antiinmigrante como el principal enemigo.
Eso me parece algo muy peligroso porque en el grado que el fascismo atrae a sectores populares no va a terminar simplemente atacando a los inmigrantes, van a continuar atacando a cualquier organización que apoye a los inmigrantes. Como hemos visto en Noruega, una de las causas por el terrorismo y la masacre era porque la juventud laborista apoyaba a los inmigrantes, incluso un porcentaje importante de las víctimas de los jóvenes eran hijos de inmigrantes, de turcos, árabes. Ese es el peligro. Empieza el fascismo atacando a los inmigrantes, a los comunistas y terminan atacando incluso a los partidos de centro izquierda.
CHURY: Me ha parecido muy ilustrativo todo el comentario sobre temas candentes. Te agradezco muchísimo y la promesa de encontrarnos el lunes nuevamente analizando la coyuntura internacional.

CHURY: Audiencia de CX36, estamos para enfocar la realidad internacional y para ello estamos saludando a James Petras que está en contacto desde los Estados Unidos. Petras, buenos días. ¿Cómo estás?
PETRAS: Estamos bien personalmente, pero políticamente un día muy trágico con la ocupación de Trípoli en Libia por parte de las fuerzas de OTAN y sus mercenarios de pago. Es una cosa que debemos discutir hoy, entre otras cosas.
CHURY: Me parece bien. ¿Y hay algún otro tema para hoy?
PETRAS: También podríamos discutir el hecho que en Colombia siguen los asesinatos de los sindicalistas más allá de lo que dice la OEA (Organización de Estados Americanos) sobre el nuevo gobierno de Santos.
Además, considerar el crecimiento de la ultra derecha en Europa y como esto ha atraído sectores de la clase obrera como apoyantes y considerar eso como un problema estratégico. La derecha está atrayendo obreros que antes votaban por la izquierda o centro izquierda.
CHURY: Me parece Petras que tenemos tres temas realmente de un interés público muy grande. Tenemos que arrancar por lo que han sido estas últimas horas en Libia.
PETRAS: Primero debemos caracterizar esta guerra contra Libia y su pueblo como uno de los grandes crímenes del nuevo milenio. El hecho es que por 188 días la OTAN, las fuerzas de Francia, Norteamérica y Gran Bretaña están tirando bombas. Son 188 días de terror, de destrucción y a partir de los actos destructivos han tomado terreno sus mercenarios, en la lucha terrestre.
Los grandes medios de comunicación en todo el mundo están cantando victoria y celebrando la destrucción.

Todos los diarios y todos los medios como CNN, BBC, Al Yazira, todos unidos celebrando esta guerra inhumana.También alguna publicación como La Jornada de México tiene fotos de celebraciones de los que apoyan a la OTAN y la guerra. Y no sólo eso, tenemos otra gran tragedia pues en ninguno de los países de Europa o en los EEUU aparece ni una sola protesta.
Mientras están tirando bombas por 188 días, destruyendo un país pacífico y a un Presidente con el mejor programa de bienestar social en toda Africa , ningún grupo pacifista, izquierdista, ha organizado una protesta contra esta masacre.
En Francia más de dos docenas de organizaciones que van desde el Partido Comunista, los trotskistas, al partido autotitulado “anticapitalista” apoyaron a los mercenarios y dicen que van “a vigilar” el proceso del conflicto y no han levantado ni un dedo contra los bombardeos.
Todos los personajes intelectuales franceses que aparecen en los periódicos de izquierda en Brasil, en Uruguay, en Argentina, personajes bien conocidos como figuras marxistas, son parte de este partido que apoya este levantamiento dirigido y financiado por la OTAN.
Esa es una de las grandes tragedias, porque mientras entendemos que el imperialismo y sus medios de comunicación están apoyando este acto criminal, la izquierda -en el mejor de los casos- es silenciosa, sino está sumando a la celebración, supuestamente va contra el tirano. Pero, ¿quién es más tirano? Una fuerza colonial que esta tirando miles y miles, cientos de miles de misiles y bombas por casi 6 meses, o un gobierno que esta legítimo en su país y apoyado por su pueblo antes que entraran en Trípoli. Y ahora, toda la población, hace lo que puede para salvar la vida incluso para evitar persecución y asesinatos ..
Van a terminar con un país destruido, un gobierno colonial, la eliminación de todos los programas sociales de Gadafi -que incluye educación, medicina gratuita, vacaciones para trabajadores.Y miles de emigrantes que son expulsados y muchos mueren en los barcos, tratando de escapar del terrorismo aéreo .Y la marina de la OTAN, abandona cuando ve a estos emigrantes en los barcos medios destruidos. No levantan una mano para ayudarlos, los ignoran.Muchos han muerto. Hay muchos crímenes y muchos puntos que debemos reflexionar sobre esta guerra colonial terrorífica de OTAN.
Si tratas de consultar los medios de comunicación de masa todos están en favor y celebrando esta victoria. Pero lo peor es, que no encuentro un periódico de la izquierda ni en México ni en Europa ni en Argentina, ni en Uruguay que esta en contra de esta guerra colonial.
Si uno consulta por ejemplo los famosos marxistas, todos en su momento condenaron las invasiones a países incluso a países con gobiernos mucho más reaccionarios que Gadafi. Trotsky y toda la izquierda condenaron la invasión de Italia contra Etiopía (1) a pesar que Haile Selassie, el Emperador era un personaje feudal, pero nadie tenía la duda de condenar el acto criminal del fascismo italiano.
Pero en nuestra época toda la izquierda está celebrando esta invasión y los ataques.
Fíjate, 188 días de bombardeo, ¿cómo puede un gobierno sobrevivir tanto tiempo? Sólo porque testimonia el apoyo que tenía Gadafi.
Y otra cosa, la cobardía de los países europeos y de EEUU, sabían que Libia no tenía ninguna defensa antiaérea, sabían que Libia no tenía ninguna defensa contra las fuerzas navales. Por eso aprovecharon la gran vulnerabilidad de un país débil, subdesarrollado, para tirar bombas con impunidad.
Y la izquierda europea y de los EEUU -marxistas, socialistas, comunistas, trotskistas- no organizaron ninguna protesta. Eso es otra cosa para reflexionar sobre la condición de lo que llamamos “izquierda”.
CHURY: En un todo de acuerdo con lo que estás diciendo. Demás esta decirte que anoche faltaba que los informativistas de la televisión uruguaya, cuando mostraban las imágenes de Libia, salieran a dar la vuelta olímpica para festejar lo que estaba pasando en Libia. Pero eso es general, seguramente ocurre lo mismo en otros países.
¿Querés agregar algo más de esto o pasamos al siguiente tema de Colombia?
PETRAS: Las últimas cifras que tenemos desde enero a junio de este año 27 sindicalistas han sido asesinados en Colombia. Esto lo ubica con el mayor índice en el mundo, e incluso hay más sindicalistas asesinados en Colombia que en todos los demás países en el mundo juntos.
En el año 2010, el 55% de todos los sindicalistas asesinados ocurrieron en Colombia. Es decir, en Colombia el gobierno y los paramilitares mataron 49 sindicalistas en 2010. Y ahora, casi la mitad del año, se supera este ritmo de asesinatos.
A pesar de eso, los países de América Latina aceptaron a Colombia como un miembro de la comunidad latinoamericana, votaron, aceptaron a Colombia como un país legítimo. Incluso Venezuela hizo algunos comentarios favorables a Colombia y a Juan Manuel Santos. Pero bajo el gobierno de Santos hay más asesinatos que durante la época de Uribe en el año 2010, 49 en todo el año contra 27 en estos siete meses de 2011.
Es otro comentario sobre como hemos visto la aceptación y casi legitimidad de regímenes que asesinan sindicalistas.
Hoy en día recibimos noticias que dos dirigentes campesinos en Honduras fueran asesinado por las fuerzas públicas en colaboración con los grandes latifundistas. Otro país con el llamado presidente Porfirio Lobos siguen los asesinatos y ahora Honduras esta reconocido como un legítimo miembro de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) .Y los Estados Unidos, “el gran defensor de la democracia, es el principal respaldo para el terrorismo en Colombia y Honduras.
Los mismos asesinos en la Casa Blanca que apoyan el terrorismo contra Libia apoyan el terrorismo en América Latina. Siguen apoyando lo que es la política antipopular, antiobrera, antidemocrática y antiseguridad de la vida. Y eso también pongo en cuestión, si América Latina quiere presentarse como una alternativa de los Estados Unidos y quiere mostrar una cara positiva, una alternativa más humana tiene que romper con esta ilusión de que todos somos demócratas.
Incluso, si uno considera que lo esencial en este momento es que los sindicatos en América Latina deben presentar una alternativa para esta política de asesinato, pero recibe poca publicidad y mucho menos reivindicación en las luchas populares.
Incluso Brasil y Uruguay siguen teniendo tropas en Haití a pesar que en una entrevista hace pocos días con un periodista inglés, el Ministro de Defensa en Brasil, Celso Amorín, dijo que están pensando en retirar las tropas brasileñas de Haití. ¡Están pensándolo, después de más de 15 años de ocupación! Sólo lo están pensando… tras 15 años de ser un mercenario de los Estados Unidos contra el pueblo pobre de Haití.
CHURY: Petras, redondeamos el análisis de hoy con lo que tiene que ver con el factor derecha en Europa.
PETRAS: Si. Hay una cosa muy interesante que es la polarización de la clase obrera. No existe el internacionalismo.
Por ejemplo, en Europa del sur en Grecia, España, Portugal y en algún grado en Italia, los obreros están en la lucha, lucha de clases, huelgas generales, marcha, ocupación de plazas, unificando fuerzas con los desocupados, los pensionistas. Mientras que en el norte de Europa en los países nórdicos como Finlandia,Noruega y en Suiza, Austria, las últimas investigaciones muestran que la ultra derecha está atrayendo sectores importantes de la clase obrera.
En Finlandia por ejemplo los obreros están apoyando un partido de la ultra derecha, lo mismo en Noruega a pesar que recibimos noticias de masacre de los jovenes en el partidos laborista . La segunda fuerza electoral en Noruega es un partido antiinmigrante, islamofóbico y atrayendo a los neo nazis. ¿Cómo explicamos esta división en Europa?

Piensen en la nueva Libia como el último y espectacular capítulo de las series del Capitalismo Siniestro. En lugar de armas de destrucción masiva, nos encontramos con la R2P (“responsabilidad para proteger”). En lugar de neoconservadores, ahí tenemos a los imperialistas humanitarios.
Pero el objetivo es el mismo: el cambio de régimen. Y el proyecto es el mismo: desmantelar completamente y privatizar una nación que no estaba integrada en el turbo-capitalismo; abrir otra (lucrativa) tierra de oportunidades para el turboalimentado neoliberalismo. Todo nos viene especialmente bien, todo es útil, ahora que nos encontramos en medio de una recesión casi global.
Llevará algún tiempo; el petróleo libio no regresará completamente al mercado hasta dentro de unos 18 meses. Pero ahí tenemos también la reconstrucción de todo lo que la Organización del Tratado para el Atlántico Norte (OTAN) ha bombardeado (sin olvidar que en Iraq aún no se ha reconstruido gran cosa de todo lo que el Pentágono arrasó en 2003…).
En cualquier caso, y en teoría –desde el petróleo a la reconstrucción-, se avecinan jugosas oportunidades para hacer negocios. El neo-napoleónico Nicolas Sarkozy de Francia y el británico David Cameron de Arabia creen que están especialmente bien posicionados para aprovecharse de la victoria de la OTAN. Pero no hay garantía de que la nueva bonanza libia sea suficiente para sacar a los antiguos poderes coloniales (¿neocoloniales?) de la recesión.
Será sobre todo el presidente Sarkozy quien ordeñe, en todo lo que valen, las oportunidades de negocio para las compañías francesas como parte de su ambiciosa agenda “estratégica del reorientación” de Francia en el mundo árabe. Unos medios de comunicación franceses serviles no dejan de regodearse con que esta era “su” guerra, repitiendo una y otra vez que decidió armar a los rebeldes sobre el terreno con armamento francés, en estrecha cooperación con Qatar, incluyendo una unidad clave de comandos rebeldes que se trasladó por mar desde Misrata a Trípoli el sábado pasado al comienzo de la “Operación Sirena”.
Bien, Sarkozy vio realmente el comienzo de todo cuando el jefe de protocolo de Muamar Gadafi desertó y se fue a París en octubre de 2010. En ese momento fue cuando empezó a incubarse todo el teatro del cambio de régimen.
BOMBAS POR PETRÓLEO
Como señalé anteriormente (véase “Bienvenidos a la democracia en Libia” del 24 de agosto), los buitres ya están sobrevolando Trípoli para atrapar (y monopolizar) el botín. Y sí, la mayor parte de las acciones desplegadas tienen que ver con el reparto del petróleo, como manifestó Abdeljalil Mayuf, director de información de la compañía “rebelde” Arabian Gulf Oil: “No tenemos problema con las compañías de países occidentales como Italia, Francia y Gran Bretaña. Pero puede que tengamos algunos inconvenientes políticos con Rusia, China y Brasil”.
Sucede que estos tres países son miembros destacados del grupo BRICS de economías emergentes (Brasil, Rusia, India, China y Sudáfrica), que están actualmente creciendo mientras que las economías atlantistas y bombardeadoras de la OTAN están varadas en el estancamiento o en la recesión. Sucede que también los cuatro BRICS más importantes se abstuvieron de aprobar la resolución 1973 del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU, el timo de la zona de exclusión aérea que se metamorfoseó en el cambio de régimen facilitado por la OTAN desde arriba. También ellos vieron la historia muy clara desde el principio.
Para empeorar aún más las cosas (para ellos), sólo tres días antes de que el AFRICOM del Pentágono lanzara sus primeros 150, más o menos, Tomahawks sobre Libia, el coronel Gadafi dio una entrevista en la televisión alemana haciendo hincapié en que si atacaban el país, todos los contratos alrededor del petróleo irían a parar a las compañías rusas, indias y chinas.
Así pues, los ganadores de la bonanza del petróleo son los ya nombrados: los miembros de la OTAN más las monarquías del Golfo. Entre las compañías implicadas: British Petroleum (BP), la Total de Francia y la compañía nacional petrolera de Qatar. En cuanto a Qatar –que envió aviones de combate y de reclutamiento a las líneas del frente, además de “rebeldes” entrenados en técnicas de combate exhaustivas que ya están administrando las ventas de petróleo en la zona oriental de Libia-, se revelará que la guerra misma fue una decisión inversora muy acertada.
Antes de los largos meses de crisis que están llegando ahora a su jugada final con los rebeldes en la capital, Trípoli, Libia estaba produciendo 1,6 millones de barriles al día. Una vez que vuelva a ponerse en marcha la producción, ésta podría hacer que los nuevos gobernantes de Trípoli recojan una cosecha anual de alrededor de 50.000 millones de dólares. La mayor parte de las estimaciones sitúan las reservas de petróleo en 46.400 millones de barriles.
Es mejor que los “rebeldes” de la nueva Libia no se metan con China. Hace cinco meses, la política oficial de China ya estaba llamando a un alto el fuego; si tal cosa hubiera sucedido, Gadafi controlaría aún más de la mitad de Libia. Pero Pekín –que nunca ha sido fan del cambio violento de régimen- está ejerciendo por el momento una moderación extrema.
Wen Zhongliang, el viceministro del ministerio de Comercio, observó intencionadamente: “Libia seguirá protegiendo los intereses y derechos de los inversores chinos y confiamos en continuar con el proceso de inversiones y cooperación económica”. Los comunicados oficiales incidían sobre todo en la “cooperación económica mutua”.
La semana pasada Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, vicepresidente del poco fiable Consejo Nacional Transitorio (CNT), dijo a Xinhua que había que respetar todos los acuerdos y contratos negociados con el régimen de Gadafi, pero Pekín va a tener muy pocas oportunidades.
Libia no suministró en 2010 más del 3% de las importaciones chinas de petróleo. Angola es un proveedor mucho más importante. Pero China es aún el principal cliente petrolero de Libia en Asia. Además, China podría ser de gran utilidad en el frente de reconstrucción de las infraestructuras o en la exportación de tecnología. Antes del estallido de la guerra tribal/civil, había más de 75 compañías chinas, con unos 36.000 empleados, sobre el terreno, que fueron velozmente evacuados en menos de tres días.
Los rusos –desde Gazprom a Rafnet- tenían miles de millones de dólares invertidos en proyectos libios; el gigante del petróleo brasileño Petrobras y la compañía constructora Odebrecht también tenían intereses allí. Aún no está claro qué pasará con ellos. El director general del Consejo Comercial Ruso-Libio, Aram Shegunts, está tremendamente preocupado: “Nuestras compañías lo perderán todo porque la OTAN les impedirá hacer cualquier negocio en Libia”.
Italia parece haber aprobado la versión “rebelde” de “estás con nosotros o contra nosotros”. El gigante energético ENI parece que no va a verse afectado, porque el Premier Silvio “bunga, bunga” Berlusconi plantó pragmáticamente a su anterior compinche al comienzo de los bombardeos en serie del AFRICOM y la OTAN.
Los directores de ENI confían en que antes del invierno el petróleo y el gas libio fluyan de nuevo hacia Italia. Y el embajador libio en Italia, Hafed Gaddur, volvió a asegurar en Roma que se respetarían todos los contratos de la era Gadafi. Por si las moscas, Berlusconi se reunirá con el primer ministro del CNT, Mahmud Yibril, este jueves en Milán.
BIN LADEN AL RESCATE
El ministro turco de Asuntos Exteriores Ahmed Davutoblu –el de la famosa política de “cero problemas con nuestros vecinos”- también ha estado babeando elogios a los ex “rebeldes” convertidos en mandamases. Sin perder tampoco ojo a la bonanza de los negocios post-Gadafi, Ankara –como flanco oriental de la OTAN- acabó ayudando a imponer un bloqueo naval sobre el régimen de Gadafi, cultivando cuidadosamente al CNT, al que reconoció formalmente en julio como gobierno de Libia. Se avecinan las “recompensas” comerciales.
Después tenemos el complot principal: como va a aprovecharse la Casa de los Saud de haber tenido un papel decisivo en establecer un régimen amistoso en Libia, posiblemente aderezado con notables salafíes; una de las razones claves de la embestida saudí –que incluyó una falsa votación en la Liga Árabe- fue el enorme rencor que se profesaban Gadafi y el rey Abdullah desde los preliminares de la guerra de Iraq en 2002.
Nunca se destacará suficientemente la cósmica hipocresía de una teocracia medieval/monarquía absoluta ultra-regresiva que invadió Bahrein y reprimió a sus chiíes nativos homenajeando en cambio lo que se ha intentado hacer pasar como un movimiento a favor de la democracia en el Norte de África.
De todos modos, es la hora de la fiesta. Ya verán cómo el grupo saudí Bin Laden reconstruye como loco toda Libia, convirtiendo finalmente el saqueado Bab al-Aziziyah en el monstruoso centro comercial de Tripolitania.

DISASTER CAPITALISM SWOOPS OVER LIBYA

Think of the new Libya as the latest spectacular chapter in the Disaster Capitalism series. Instead of weapons of mass destruction, we had R2P ("responsibility to protect"). Instead of neo-conservatives, we had humanitarian imperialists.
But the target is the same: regime change. And the project is the same: to completely dismantle and privatize a nation that was not integrated into turbo-capitalism; to open another (profitable) land of opportunity for turbocharged neo-liberalism. The whole thing is especially handy because it is smack in the middle of a nearly global recession.
It will take some time; Libyan oil won't totally return to the market within 18 months. But there's the reconstruction of everything the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) bombed (well, not much of what the Pentagon bombed in 2003 was reconstructed in Iraq ...)
Anyway - from oil to rebuilding - in thesis juicy business opportunities loom. France's neo-Napoleonic Nicolas Sarkozy and Britain's David of Arabia Cameron believe they will be especially well positioned to profit from NATO's victory. Yet there's no guarantee the new Libyan bonanza will be enough to lift both former colonial powers (neo-colonials?) out of recession.
President Sarkozy in particular will milk the business opportunities for French companies for all they're worth - part of his ambitious agenda of "strategic redeployment" of France in the Arab world. A compliant French media are gloating that this was "his" war - spinning that he decided to arm the rebels on the ground with French weaponry, in close cooperation with Qatar, including a key rebel commando unit that went by sea from Misrata to Tripoli last Saturday, at the start of "Operation Siren".
Well, he certainly saw the opening when Muammar Gaddafi's chief of protocol defected to Paris in October 2010. That's when the whole regime change drama started to be incubated.
BOMBS FOR OIL
As previously noted (see Welcome to Libya's 'democracy', Asia Times Online, August 24) the vultures are already circling Tripoli to grab (and monopolize) the spoils. And yes - most of the action has to do with oil deals, as in this stark assertion by Abdeljalil Mayouf, information manager at the "rebel" Arabian Gulf Oil Company; "We don't have a problem with Western countries like the Italians, French and UK companies. But we may have some political issues with Russia, China and Brazil."
These three happen to be crucial members of the BRICS group of emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which are actually growing while the Atlanticist, NATO-bombing economies are either stuck in stagnation or recession. The top four BRICs also happen to have abstained from approving UN Security Council resolution 1973, the no-fly zone scam that metamorphosed into NATO bringing regime change from above. They saw right through it from the beginning.
To make matters worse (for them), only three days before the Pentagon's Africom launched its first 150-plus Tomahawks over Libya, Colonel Gaddafi gave an interview to German TV stressing that if the country were attacked, all energy contracts would be transferred to Russian, Indian and Chinese companies.
So the winners in the oil bonanza are already designated: NATO members plus Arab monarchies. Among the companies involved, British Petroleum (BP), France's Total and the Qatar national oil company. For Qatar - which dispatched jet fighters and recruiters to the front lines, trained "rebels" in exhaustive combat techniques, and is already managing oil sales in eastern Libya - the war will reveal itself to be a very wise investment decision.
Prior to the months-long crisis that is in its end game now with the rebels in the capital, Tripoli, Libya was producing 1.6 million barrels per day. Once resumed, this could reap Tripoli's new rulers some US$50 billion annually. Most estimates place oil reserves at 46.4 billion barrels.
The "rebels" of new Libya better not mess with China. Five months ago, China's official policy was already to call for a ceasefire; if that had happened, Gaddafi would still control more than half of Libya. Yet Beijing - never a fan of violent regime change - for the moment is exercising extreme restraint.
Wen Zhongliang, the deputy head of the Ministry of Trade, willfully observed, "Libya will continue to protect the interests and rights of Chinese investors and we hope to continue investment and economic cooperation." Official statements are piling up emphasizing "mutual economic cooperation".
Last week, Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, vice president of the dodgy Transitional National Council (TNC), told Xinhua that all deals and contracts agreed with the Gaddafi regime would be honored - but Beijing is taking no chances.
Libya supplied no more than 3% of China's oil imports in 2010. Angola is a much more crucial supplier. But China is still Libya's top oil customer in Asia. Moreover, China could be very helpful in the infrastructure rebuilding front, or in the technology export - no less than 75 Chinese companies with 36,000 employees were already on the ground before the outbreak of the tribal/civil war, swiftly evacuated in less than three days.
The Russians - from Gazprom to Tafnet - had billions of dollars invested in Libyan projects; Brazilian oil giant Petrobras and the construction company Odebrecht also had intrests there. It's still unclear what will happen to them. The director general of the Russia-Libya Business Council, Aram Shegunts, is extremely worried: "Our companies will lose everything because NATO will prevent them from doing business in Libya."
Italy seems to have passed the "rebel" version of "you're either with us or without us". Energy giant ENI apparently won't be affected, as Premier Silvio "Bunga Bunga" Berlusconi pragmatically dumped his previous very close pal Gaddafi at the start of the Africom/NATO bombing spree.
ENI's directors are confident Libya's oil and gas flows to southern Italy will resume before winter. And the Libyan ambassador in Italy, Hafed Gaddur, reassured Rome that all Gaddafi-era contracts will be honored. Just in case, Berlusconi will meet the TNC's prime minister, Mahmoud Jibril, this Thursday in Milan.
BIN LADEN TO THE RESCUE
Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu - of the famed "zero problems with our neighbors" policy - has also been gushing praise on the former "rebels" turned powers-that-be. Eyeing the post-Gaddafi business bonanza as well, Ankara - as NATO's eastern flank - ended up helping to impose a naval blockade on the Gaddafi regime, carefully cultivated the TNC, and in July formally recognized it as the government of Libya. Business "rewards" loom.
Then there's the crucial plot; how the House of Saud is going to profit from having been instrumental in setting up a friendly regime in Libya, possibly peppered with Salafi notables; one of the key reasons for the Saudi onslaught - which included a fabricated vote at the Arab League - was the extreme bad blood between Gaddafi and King Abdullah since the run-up towards the war on Iraq in 2002.
It's never enough to stress the cosmic hypocrisy of an ultra-regressive absolute monarchy/medieval theocracy - which invaded Bahrain and repressed its native Shi'ites - saluting what could be construed as a pro-democracy movement in Northern Africa.
Anyway, it's time to party. Expect the Saudi Bin Laden Group to reconstruct like mad all over Libya - eventually turning the (looted) Bab al-Aziziyah into a monster, luxury Mall of Tripolitania.

What could come after naked piracy, oil plundering and horrible war crimes against Libya? The obvious answer so far is that “Libya could be transformed into a new Afghanistan”, this is the main thesis in this article.
If we consider the determinations of the Gaddafi sons to organize the armed resistance is easy to speculate this future perspectives in the region. The thesis above can be gathered from several interviews circulated in foreign media that the tactic of key commanders of Gadaffi forces is not to confront the common “rebels”, they will confront themselves. So, their main focus will be to cut the oil and to eliminate key servants of foreign forces (its mercenaries and key political figures).
It seems that the objectives of the armed resistance against NATO allies could be:
Create two armed branches of a clandestine State: a. United Libya National Committee and b. International Coalition to Liberate Africa. Core objective: bury NATO (North Atlantic Terrorist Organization) in Libya and North Africa.
The first branch aim would be to destroy the puppet State regime of Western Imperialism by attacking first their economic base –oil refineries- and then their key political figures inside Libya. Rationality: If they want oil, bomb the pipe-lines, refineries and main circuits. If they create a State in France, Libyans will create an own National Committee to Unite Libya inside the country. This means that the remains of the current armed forces of Gaddafi might be reorganized and transformed into clandestine resistance commandos against NATO invaders (either their political figures and their armed mercenaries).
The main objective of the second branch of the clandestine State could be to transform the spring rev in Africa into a hot summer rev (armed one) against all puppet regimes of the US & Western imperialism. This implies to create national commandos for armed resistance inside each nation against US-NATO military stations and political figures (a low intensity war against against key political and military figures inside each country and to sabotage or destroy each economic base connected to Western narrow interest). The core objective of this guerrilla warfare is to Destroy Africom plan (US-NATO military control of the continent). This imperialist project can and must be destroyed in North Africa, is their aim.
If this is so, then THE POSSIBILITY OF A NEW AFGHANISTAN IS REAL. If the oil is cut to Europe-Nato supporters, then they will lose this war and the Afghan and Iraq ones. To sum up: Africa could be converted into the cemetery of NATO (now nemed: North Atlantic Terrorist Organization).

As the civil war in Libya rages, many say the country could go the way of Egypt and end up with a disillusioned society impatient for reform, but others believe it could be much worse.
Abdel Bari Atwan says there is a huge potential of Libya turning into a new Afghanistan.
The NATO-led regime change in Libya might well turn the country into a failed state, following the example of Afghanistan. Once Gaddafi leaves power, one way or another – because it is simply impossible for him to fight the whole of the NATO – the National Transitional Council (NTC) will have huge divisions within its own rank and it is highly doubtful it will be able to keep Libya as a united state.
Abdel Bari Atwan predicts that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi will stay in Libya and nobody knows either where he is or what will happen to him, though he and his sons still have political power in the country.
The editor doubts the Gaddafi regime can survive, saying “the most he can try to negotiate is a safe exit for him and his family.”
“The problem of post-Gaddafi era could be actually more problematic than the problem before the removal of Gaddafi regime, because there is a huge split among the rebels themselves.”
“The majority of people who are fighting Gaddafi are Muslim extremists or people who believe they must create an Islamic state in Libya,” Abdel Bari Atwan acknowledged, saying that legitimizing this group would be a great problem for NATO.
Once NATO decides officially to start a ground operation in Libya it will turn the rebels and Muslim extremists that are now fighting Gaddafi against the troops that would invade Libya.
People in Libya have never seen democracy and imposing will be a very long and complicated process. Democracy is a culture of practice.
“You cannot parachute democracy to people in Libya, in Iraq or Afghanistan,” the editor said.
“Talks about democracy are very sweet and we know about that. Under the banner of democracy the West intervened in Afghanistan and Iraq – and look what happened,” he said, recalling that it is the 10-year anniversary of the American invasion in Afghanistan this year.
“NATO is not a charitable organization” so there must be some sort of oil deal between the Libyan rebels and the alliance which helped the insurgents to gain everything by bombing out military objects of Libya.
“Libyan cake is lucrative and already shared” shared Abdel Bari Atwan and the NTC will pay the demanded price to aggressors: exploration contract and military bases.
“[The] Libyan future government should pay and will pay a very heavy price – this is not a free service” acknowledged the editor, saying the NTC definitely has a secret oil agreement with the NATO countries.
As for the UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s statement that NATO is going to stay in Libya as long as needed, that is a pure imperialism and the Libyan people will not tolerate this and will fight the aggressors, insists Abdel Bari Atwan.

They can keep the age-old divide-n-rule going while they keep looting the Libyan wealth.
They can blind their domestic audience of the real economic problems with "fighting-terror" slogan hence the welfare-cuts at home.
They can keep the defence-industry going to complement the waning manufacturing sector in the face of cheap Chinese produce.
They can send their unemployed youths to the battle front to get killed hence solving the problem at home, also giving pollies much-needed crocodile-tear shedding opportunity.

People in Libya have never seen democracy and imposing will be a very long and complicated process. Democracy is a culture of practice.
“You cannot parachute democracy to people in Libya, in Iraq or Afghanistan,” the editor said.
“Talks about democracy are very sweet and we know about that. Under the banner of democracy the West intervened in Afghanistan and Iraq – and look what happened,” he said, recalling that it is the 10-year anniversary of the American invasion in Afghanistan this year.
“NATO is not a charitable organization” so there must be some sort of oil deal between the Libyan rebels and the alliance which helped the insurgents to gain everything by bombing out military objects of Libya.
“Libyan cake is lucrative and already shared” shared Abdel Bari Atwan and the NTC will pay the demanded price to aggressors: exploration contract and military bases.
“[The] Libyan future government should pay and will pay a very heavy price – this is not a free service” acknowledged the editor, saying the NTC definitely has a secret oil agreement with the NATO countries.
As for the UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s statement that NATO is going to stay in Libya as long as needed, that is a pure imperialism and the Libyan people will not tolerate this and will fight the aggressors, insists Abdel Bari Atwan.

They can keep the age-old divide-n-rule going while they keep looting the Libyan wealth.

They can keep the defence-industry going to complement the waning manufacturing sector in the face of cheap Chinese produce.

estas horas la única cuestión pendiente es el destino de Muammar Gadafi:
¿se rendirá o luchará hasta el fin?, ¿será Allende o Noriega?, ¿vivo o
muerto? y, si vivo, ¿qué le espera? El exilio es altamente improbable:
no tiene quien lo reciba y, además, su inmensa fortuna, depositada en
bancos de Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Francia e Italia está bloqueada.
Lo más probable será que siga la suerte de Slobodan Milosevic y termine
enfrentando las acusaciones del Tribunal Penal Internacional (TPI), que
lo acusará por genocida al haber ordenado a sus tropas que disparen
contra de su pueblo.
Haciendo gala de una obscena doble moral, el TPI va a acoger una
petición de un país, Estados Unidos, que no sólo no ha firmado el
tratado y que no le reconoce jurisdicción sobre sus nacionales sino que
lanzó una pertinaz campaña en contra del mismo obligando más de un
centenar de países de la periferia capitalista a renunciar a su derecho
a denunciar ante el TPI a ciudadanos norteamericanos responsables de
violaciones semejantes -o peores- que las perpetradas por Gadafi.
Una infamia más de un supuesto "orden mundial" que se está cayendo en
pedazos gracias a los continuos atropellos de las grandes potencias. Y
una lección para todos aquellos que confían –como en su momento lo hizo
la Argentina de los noventas- en que consintiendo las "relaciones
carnales" con el imperialismo se gozaría para siempre de su protección.
Craso error, como se comprobó en el derrumbe de la Convertibilidad y
como hoy lo experimenta en carne propia Gadafi, atónito ante la
ingratitud de aquellos de quienes se había convertido en obediente peón.
Siendo esto así, ¿por qué Obama, Cameron, Sarkozy y Berlusconi le
soltaron la mano? En primer lugar, por oportunismo. Esos gobiernos, que
se habían alineado incondicionalmente con Mubarak en Egipto durante
décadas, cometieron el error de subestimar el fervor insurreccional que
conmovía a Egipto. Cuando cambiaron de bando, dejando en la estacada a
su gendarme regional, su desprestigio ante la revolución democrática se
hizo ostensible e irreparable. En Libia tuvieron la ocasión de reparar
ese mal paso, facilitado por la brutal represión que Gadafi descargó en
las primeras semanas de la revuelta. Esto ofreció el pretexto que
estaban buscando para desencadenar la no menos brutal intervención
militar de la OTAN -con su funesta secuela de víctimas civiles producto
de los "daños colaterales" de sus “bombas inteligentes”- y, por otro
lado, dando pie al inicio de las actuaciones del TPI a cuyo fiscal
general ni por asomo se le ocurriría citar al comandante de la OTAN para
rendir cuentas ante crímenes tanto o más monstruosos que los perpetrados
por el régimen libio.
En una entrevista reciente Samir Amin manifestó que toda la operación
montada en contra de Gadafi no tiene que ver con el petróleo porque las
potencias imperialistas ya lo tienen en sus manos. Su objetivo es otro,
y esta es la segunda razón de la invasión: "establecer el Africom (el
Comando Militar de Estados Unidos para África) actualmente con sede en
Stuttgart, Alemania, dado que los países africanos, no importa lo que se
piense de ellos, se negaron a aceptar su radicación en África."
Lo que requiere el imperialismo es establecer una cabeza de playa para
lanzar sus operaciones militares en África. Hacerlo desde Alemania
aparte de poco práctico es altamente irritativo, por no decir ridículo.
Ahora tratarán de que el régimen lacayo que se instale en Trípoli acepte
la amable “invitación” que seguramente le cursará la OTAN. De todos
modos, el operativo no será para nada sencillo, entre otras cosas porque
el Consejo Nacional de la Transición (CNT) es un precipitado altamente
inestable y heterogéneo de fuerzas sociales y políticas débilmente
unidos por la argamasa que sólo le proporciona su visceral rechazo a
Gadafi, pese a que no son pocos quienes hasta hacía pocos meses se
contaban entre sus más obsecuentes y serviles colaboradores.
Hay fundadas sospechas para creer que el asesinato aún no aclarado del
ex jefe militar de los rebeldes, Mohammed Fatah Younis, ex ministro del
Interior de Khadafy y ex comandante de las fuerzas especiales libias,
fue causado por un sector de los rebeldes en represalia por su actuación
en el aplastamiento de una revuelta islamista en la década de los noventas.
Otro ejemplo, no menos esclarecedor que el anterior, lo ofrece el
mismísimo presidente del CNT. Según Amin, Mustafá Abdel Jalil es “un
curioso demócrata: fue el juez que condenó a las enfermeras búlgaras a
la muerte antes de ser promovido a Ministro de Justicia por Gaddafi,"
cargo en el que se desempeñó desde 2007 hasta 2011.
El CNT, en suma, es un bloque reaccionario y oportunista, integrado por
islamistas radicales, socialistas " (estilo Zapatero o Tony Blair"),
nacionalistas (sin nación, porque Libia no lo es) y, como señala el
analista internacional Juan G. Tokatlian, "bandidos, empresarios,
guerrilleros y ex militares" para ni hablar del faccionalismo tribal y
étnico que ha marcado desde siempre la historia de ese territorio sin
nación que es Libia. Por eso no existen demasiadas razones para suponer
que el CNT inaugurará un período democrático. Sus miembros no tienen
mejores credenciales que Gadaffi y pesa sobre ellos la irredimible
infamia de haber invitado a las potencias imperialistas a bombardear sus
ciudades y aldeas para viabilizar su derrocamiento. Por eso, lo más
probable es que una vez derrotado el régimen las sangrientas luchas
intestinas y la ingobernabilidad resultante tornen inevitable para las
potencias imperialistas entrar en otro pantano, como Irak y Afganistán,
para establecer un mínimo de orden que permita organizar su rapiña.
Desgraciadamente, lo que le espera a Libia no es la democracia sino un
turbulento protectorado europeo-norteamericano y, como dijera Winston
Churchill de su país en tiempos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, sangre,
sudor y lágrimas.

The United States, United Kingdom, France, and Italy targeted the Libyan government for overthrow or “regime change” not because these governments were worried about protecting civilians or to bring about a more democratic form of governance in Libya. If that were the real motivation of the NATO powers, they could start the bombing of Saudi Arabia right away. There are no elections in Saudi Arabia. The monarchy does not even allow women to drive cars. By law, women must be fully covered in public or they will go to prison. Protests are rare in Saudi Arabia because any dissent is met with imprisonment, torture and execution.
The Saudi monarchy is protected by U.S. imperialism because it is part of an undeclared but real U.S. sphere of influence and it is the largest producer of oil in the world. The U.S. attitude toward the Saudi monarchy was put succinctly by Ronald Reagan in 1981, when he said that the U.S. government “will not permit” revolution in Saudi Arabia such as the 1979 Iranian revolution that removed the U.S. client regime of the Shah. Reagan’s message was clear: the Pentagon and CIA’s military forces would be used decisively to destroy any democratic movement against the rule of the Saudi royal family.
Reagan’s explicit statement in 1981 has in fact been the policy of every successive U.S. administration, including the current one.
LIBYA AND IMPERIALISM
Libya, unlike Saudi Arabia, did have a revolution against its monarchy. As a result of the 1969 revolution led by Muammar Gaddafi, Libya was no longer in the sphere of influence of any imperialist country.
Libya had once been an impoverished colony of Italy living under the boot heel of the fascist Mussolini. After the Allied victory in World War II, control of the country was formally transferred to the United Nations and Libya became independent in 1951 with authority vested in the monarch King Idris.
But in actuality, Libya was controlled by the United States and Britain until the 1969 revolution.
One of the first acts of the 1969 revolution was to eliminate the vestiges of colonialism and foreign control. Not only were oil fields nationalized but Gaddafi eliminated foreign military bases inside the country.
In March of 1970, the Gaddafi government shut down two important British military bases in Tobruk and El Adem. He then became the Pentagon’s enemy when he evicted the U.S. Wheelus Air Force Base near Tripoli that had been operated by the United States since 1945. Before the British military took control in 1943, the facility was a base operated by the Italians under Mussolini.
Wheelus had been an important Strategic Air Command (SAC) base during the Cold War, housing B-52 bombers and other front-line Pentagon aircrafts that targeted the Soviet Union. Once under Libyan control, the Gaddafi government allowed Soviet military planes to access the airfield.
In 1986, the Pentagon heavily bombed the base at the same time it bombed downtown Tripoli in an effort to assassinate Gaddafi. That effort failed but his 2-year-old daughter died along with scores of other civilians.
THE CHARACTER OF THE GADDAFI REGIME
The political, social and class orientation of the Libyan regime has gone through several stages in the last four decades. The government and ruling establishment reflected contradictory class, social, religious and regional antagonisms. The fact that the leadership of the NATO-led National Transition Council is comprised of top officials of the Gaddafi government, who broke with the regime and allied themselves with NATO, is emblematic of the decades-long instability within the Libyan establishment.
These inherent contradictions were exacerbated by pressures applied to Libya from the outside. The U.S. imposed far-reaching economic sanctions on Libya in the 1980s. The largest western corporations were barred from doing business with Libya and the country was denied access to credit from western banks.
In its foreign policy, Libya gave significant financial and military support to national liberation struggles, including in Palestine, Southern Africa, Ireland and elsewhere.
Because of Libya's economic policies, living standards for the population had jumped dramatically after 1969. Having a small population and substantial income from its oil production, augmented with the Gaddafi regime’s far-reaching policy of social benefits, created a huge advance in the social and economic status for the population. Libya was still a class society with rich and poor, and gaps between urban and rural living standards, but illiteracy was basically wiped out, while education and health care were free and extensively accessible. By 2010, the per capita income in Libya was near the highest in Africa at $14,000 and life expectancy rose to over 77 years, according to the CIA’s World Fact Book.
Gaddafi’s political orientation explicitly rejected communism and capitalism. He created an ideology called the “Third International Theory,” which was an eclectic mix of Islamic, Arab nationalist and socialist ideas and programs. In 1977, Libya was renamed the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. A great deal of industry, including oil, was nationalized and the government provided an expansive social insurance program or what is called a welfare state policy akin to some features prevalent in the Soviet Union and some West European capitalist countries.
But Libya was not a workers’ state or a “socialist government” to use the popular if not scientific use of the term “socialist.” The revolution was not a workers and peasant rebellion against the capitalist class per se. Libya remained a class society although class differentiation may have been somewhat obscured beneath the existence of revolutionary committees and the radical, populist rhetoric that emanated from the regime.
As in many developing, formerly colonized countries, state ownership of property was not “socialist” but rather a necessary fortification of an under-developed capitalist class. State property in Iraq, Libya and other such post-colonial regimes was designed to facilitate the social and economic growth of a new capitalist ruling class that was initially too weak, too deprived of capital and too cut off from international credit to compete on its own terms with the dominant sectors of world monopoly capitalism. The nascent capitalist classes in such developing economies promoted state-owned property, under their control, in order to intersect with Western banks and transnational corporations and create more favorable terms for global trade and investment.
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the “socialist bloc” governments of central and Eastern Europe in 1989-91 deprived Libya of an economic and military counter-weight to the United States, and the Libyan government’s domestic economic and foreign policy shifted towards accommodation with the West.
In the 1990s some sectors of the Libyan economic establishment and the Gaddafi-led government favored privatization, cutting back on social programs and subsidies and integration into western European markets. The earlier populism of the regime incrementally gave way to the adoption of neo-liberal policies. This was, however, a long process.
In 2004, the George W. Bush administration ended sanctions on Libya. Western oil companies and banks and other corporations initiated huge direct investments in Libya and trade with Libyan enterprises.
There was also a growth of unemployment in Libya and in cutbacks in social spending, leading to further inequality between rich and poor and class polarization.
But Gaddafi himself was still considered a thorn in the side of the imperialist powers. They want absolute puppets, not simply partners, in their plans for exploitation. The Wikileaks release of State Department cables between 2007 and 2010 show that the United states and western oil companies were condemning Gaddafi for what they called “resource nationalism.” Gaddafi even threatened to re-nationalize western oil companies’ property unless Libya was granted a larger share of the revenue for their projects.
As an article in today’s New York Times Business section said honestly: “"Colonel Qaddafi proved to be a problematic partner for the international oil companies, frequently raising fees and taxes and making other demands. A new government with close ties to NATO may be an easier partner for Western nations to deal with."
Even the most recent CIA Fact Book publication on Libya, written before the armed revolt championed by NATO, complained of the measured tempo of pro-market reforms in Libya: “Libya faces a long road ahead in liberalizing the socialist-oriented economy, but initial steps— including applying for WTO membership, reducing some subsidies, and announcing plans for privatization—are laying the groundwork for a transition to a more market-based economy.” (CIA World Fact Book)
The beginning of the armed revolt on February 23 by disaffected members of the Libyan military and political establishment provided the opportunity for the U.S. imperialists, in league with their French and British counterparts, to militarily overthrow the Libyan government and replace it with a client or stooge regime. Of course, in the revolt were workers and young people who had many legitimate grievances against the Libyan government. But what is critical in an armed struggle for state power is not the composition of the rank-and-file soldiers, but the class character and political orientation of the leadership.
CHARACTER OF THE NATIONAL TRANSITION COUNCIL
The National Transitional Council (NTC) constituted itself as the leadership of the uprising in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city. The central leader is Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who was Libya’s Minister of Justice until his defection at the start of the uprising. He was one of a significant number of Western-oriented and neoliberal officials from Libya’s government, diplomatic corps and military ranks who joined the opposition in the days immediately after the start of the revolt.
As soon as it was established, the NTC began issuing calls for imperialist intervention. These appeals became increasing panicky as it became clear that, contrary to early predictions that the Gaddafi-led government would collapse in a matter of days, it was the “rebels” who faced imminent defeat in the civil war. In fact, it was only due to the U.S./NATO bombing campaign, initiated with great hurry on March 19 that the rebellion did not collapse.
The last five months of war have erased any doubt about the pro-imperialist character of the NTC. One striking episode took place on April 22, when Senator John McCain made a “surprise” trip to Benghazi. A huge banner was unveiled to greet him with an American flag printed on it and the words: “United States of America – You have a new ally in North Africa.”
Similar to the military relationship between the NATO and Libyan “rebel” armed forces, the NTC is entirely dependent on and subordinated to the U.S., French, British and Italian imperialist governments.
If the Pentagon, CIA, and Wall Street succeed in installing a client regime in Tripoli it will accelerate and embolden the imperialist threats and intervention against other independent governments such as Syria and Venezuela. In each case we will see a similar process unfold, including the demonization of the leadership of the targeted countries so as to silence or mute a militant anti-war response to the aggression of the war-makers.
We in the ANSWER Coalition invite all those who share this perspective to join with us, to mobilize, and to unmask the colonial agenda that hides under the slogan of “humanitarian intervention.”

If that were the real motivation of the NATO powers, they could start the bombing of Saudi Arabia right away. There are no elections in Saudi Arabia. The monarchy does not even allow women to drive cars. By law, women must be fully covered in public or they will go to prison. Protests are rare in Saudi Arabia because any dissent is met with imprisonment, torture and execution.
The Saudi monarchy is protected by U.S. imperialism because it is part of an undeclared but real U.S. sphere of influence and it is the largest producer of oil in the world. The U.S. attitude toward the Saudi monarchy was put succinctly by Ronald Reagan in 1981, when he said that the U.S. government “will not permit” revolution in Saudi Arabia such as the 1979 Iranian revolution that removed the U.S. client regime of the Shah. Reagan’s message was clear: the Pentagon and CIA’s military forces would be used decisively to destroy any democratic movement against the rule of the Saudi royal family.
Reagan’s explicit statement in 1981 has in fact been the policy of every successive U.S. administration, including the current one.
LIBYA AND IMPERIALISM
Libya, unlike Saudi Arabia, did have a revolution against its monarchy. As a result of the 1969 revolution led by Muammar Gaddafi, Libya was no longer in the sphere of influence of any imperialist country.
Libya had once been an impoverished colony of Italy living under the boot heel of the fascist Mussolini. After the Allied victory in World War II, control of the country was formally transferred to the United Nations and Libya became independent in 1951 with authority vested in the monarch King Idris.
But in actuality, Libya was controlled by the United States and Britain until the 1969 revolution.
One of the first acts of the 1969 revolution was to eliminate the vestiges of colonialism and foreign control. Not only were oil fields nationalized but Gaddafi eliminated foreign military bases inside the country.
In March of 1970, the Gaddafi government shut down two important British military bases in Tobruk and El Adem. He then became the Pentagon’s enemy when he evicted the U.S. Wheelus Air Force Base near Tripoli that had been operated by the United States since 1945. Before the British military took control in 1943, the facility was a base operated by the Italians under Mussolini.
Wheelus had been an important Strategic Air Command (SAC) base during the Cold War, housing B-52 bombers and other front-line Pentagon aircrafts that targeted the Soviet Union. Once under Libyan control, the Gaddafi government allowed Soviet military planes to access the airfield.
In 1986, the Pentagon heavily bombed the base at the same time it bombed downtown Tripoli in an effort to assassinate Gaddafi. That effort failed but his 2-year-old daughter died along with scores of other civilians.
THE CHARACTER OF THE GADDAFI REGIME
The political, social and class orientation of the Libyan regime has gone through several stages in the last four decades. The government and ruling establishment reflected contradictory class, social, religious and regional antagonisms. The fact that the leadership of the NATO-led National Transition Council is comprised of top officials of the Gaddafi government, who broke with the regime and allied themselves with NATO, is emblematic of the decades-long instability within the Libyan establishment.
These inherent contradictions were exacerbated by pressures applied to Libya from the outside. The U.S. imposed far-reaching economic sanctions on Libya in the 1980s. The largest western corporations were barred from doing business with Libya and the country was denied access to credit from western banks.
In its foreign policy, Libya gave significant financial and military support to national liberation struggles, including in Palestine, Southern Africa, Ireland and elsewhere.
Because of Libya's economic policies, living standards for the population had jumped dramatically after 1969. Having a small population and substantial income from its oil production, augmented with the Gaddafi regime’s far-reaching policy of social benefits, created a huge advance in the social and economic status for the population. Libya was still a class society with rich and poor, and gaps between urban and rural living standards, but illiteracy was basically wiped out, while education and health care were free and extensively accessible. By 2010, the per capita income in Libya was near the highest in Africa at $14,000 and life expectancy rose to over 77 years, according to the CIA’s World Fact Book.
Gaddafi’s political orientation explicitly rejected communism and capitalism. He created an ideology called the “Third International Theory,” which was an eclectic mix of Islamic, Arab nationalist and socialist ideas and programs. In 1977, Libya was renamed the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. A great deal of industry, including oil, was nationalized and the government provided an expansive social insurance program or what is called a welfare state policy akin to some features prevalent in the Soviet Union and some West European capitalist countries.
But Libya was not a workers’ state or a “socialist government” to use the popular if not scientific use of the term “socialist.” The revolution was not a workers and peasant rebellion against the capitalist class per se. Libya remained a class society although class differentiation may have been somewhat obscured beneath the existence of revolutionary committees and the radical, populist rhetoric that emanated from the regime.
As in many developing, formerly colonized countries, state ownership of property was not “socialist” but rather a necessary fortification of an under-developed capitalist class. State property in Iraq, Libya and other such post-colonial regimes was designed to facilitate the social and economic growth of a new capitalist ruling class that was initially too weak, too deprived of capital and too cut off from international credit to compete on its own terms with the dominant sectors of world monopoly capitalism. The nascent capitalist classes in such developing economies promoted state-owned property, under their control, in order to intersect with Western banks and transnational corporations and create more favorable terms for global trade and investment.
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the “socialist bloc” governments of central and Eastern Europe in 1989-91 deprived Libya of an economic and military counter-weight to the United States, and the Libyan government’s domestic economic and foreign policy shifted towards accommodation with the West.
In the 1990s some sectors of the Libyan economic establishment and the Gaddafi-led government favored privatization, cutting back on social programs and subsidies and integration into western European markets. The earlier populism of the regime incrementally gave way to the adoption of neo-liberal policies. This was, however, a long process.
In 2004, the George W. Bush administration ended sanctions on Libya. Western oil companies and banks and other corporations initiated huge direct investments in Libya and trade with Libyan enterprises.
There was also a growth of unemployment in Libya and in cutbacks in social spending, leading to further inequality between rich and poor and class polarization.
But Gaddafi himself was still considered a thorn in the side of the imperialist powers. They want absolute puppets, not simply partners, in their plans for exploitation. The Wikileaks release of State Department cables between 2007 and 2010 show that the United states and western oil companies were condemning Gaddafi for what they called “resource nationalism.” Gaddafi even threatened to re-nationalize western oil companies’ property unless Libya was granted a larger share of the revenue for their projects.
As an article in today’s New York Times Business section said honestly: “"Colonel Qaddafi proved to be a problematic partner for the international oil companies, frequently raising fees and taxes and making other demands. A new government with close ties to NATO may be an easier partner for Western nations to deal with."
Even the most recent CIA Fact Book publication on Libya, written before the armed revolt championed by NATO, complained of the measured tempo of pro-market reforms in Libya: “Libya faces a long road ahead in liberalizing the socialist-oriented economy, but initial steps— including applying for WTO membership, reducing some subsidies, and announcing plans for privatization—are laying the groundwork for a transition to a more market-based economy.” (CIA World Fact Book)
The beginning of the armed revolt on February 23 by disaffected members of the Libyan military and political establishment provided the opportunity for the U.S. imperialists, in league with their French and British counterparts, to militarily overthrow the Libyan government and replace it with a client or stooge regime. Of course, in the revolt were workers and young people who had many legitimate grievances against the Libyan government. But what is critical in an armed struggle for state power is not the composition of the rank-and-file soldiers, but the class character and political orientation of the leadership.
CHARACTER OF THE NATIONAL TRANSITION COUNCIL
The National Transitional Council (NTC) constituted itself as the leadership of the uprising in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city. The central leader is Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who was Libya’s Minister of Justice until his defection at the start of the uprising. He was one of a significant number of Western-oriented and neoliberal officials from Libya’s government, diplomatic corps and military ranks who joined the opposition in the days immediately after the start of the revolt.
As soon as it was established, the NTC began issuing calls for imperialist intervention. These appeals became increasing panicky as it became clear that, contrary to early predictions that the Gaddafi-led government would collapse in a matter of days, it was the “rebels” who faced imminent defeat in the civil war. In fact, it was only due to the U.S./NATO bombing campaign, initiated with great hurry on March 19 that the rebellion did not collapse.
The last five months of war have erased any doubt about the pro-imperialist character of the NTC. One striking episode took place on April 22, when Senator John McCain made a “surprise” trip to Benghazi. A huge banner was unveiled to greet him with an American flag printed on it and the words: “United States of America – You have a new ally in North Africa.”
Similar to the military relationship between the NATO and Libyan “rebel” armed forces, the NTC is entirely dependent on and subordinated to the U.S., French, British and Italian imperialist governments.
If the Pentagon, CIA, and Wall Street succeed in installing a client regime in Tripoli it will accelerate and embolden the imperialist threats and intervention against other independent governments such as Syria and Venezuela. In each case we will see a similar process unfold, including the demonization of the leadership of the targeted countries so as to silence or mute a militant anti-war response to the aggression of the war-makers.
We in the ANSWER Coalition invite all those who share this perspective to join with us, to mobilize, and to unmask the colonial agenda that hides under the slogan of “humanitarian intervention.”

Saif claimed that the capital is still in government's control and blamed the West is using hi-tech methods to disseminate rumors among his countrymen in a bid to create chaos and an atmosphere of fear. He arrived in the bastion in a four-wheel-drive, to the cheers of dozens of awaiting supporters waving Libyan national flags and portraits of Saif and his father, whose whereabouts is still a myth. Saif said his father is still in Tripoli and safe, though the claim is hard to verify.
Earlier in the day, Saif made a brief visit to the Rixos hotel where dozens of foreign reporters are staying, arriving in a convoy of armored Land Cruisers, more than a day after rebels claimed they had captured him. According to a Xinhua reporter, both the hotel and the Bab al-Aziziyah compound just across the street apparently are still under the control of Gaddafi's troops, so it is no suprise that Saif could travel between the two locations as he wishes.
Meanwhile, Libya's ambassador to the United States Ali Suleiman Aujali told CNN another son of Gaddafi, Mohammed Gaddafi, who had been captured by the rebels, has escaped. Iraqi press quoted Gaddafi's spokesperson as saying that Mohammed was liberated by Libyan government troops and he is now in a very safe place.
There has been no immediate explanation from the Benghazi-based rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) which had announced the capture of both Saif and Mohammed.

Gaddafi’s son Khamis is leading loyalist forces towards central Tripoli in a government counter-offensive against rebel forces that have been already celebrating an easy victory over Colonel Gaddafi. Early on Monday morning, tanks rolled out of Muammar Gaddafi’s Tripoli residence and began shelling the rebels who had gathered near the compound as sustained heavy gunfire was heard in the Libyan capital. The tanks are being supported by pick-up trucks with heavy machineguns mounted on them, used by government forces to suppress rebel fire on Assarin Street and in al-Khalifa area.
More government tanks have been reported in the port of Tripoli. Muammar Gaddafi’s whereabouts remain unknown. It is possible that Libyan leader might still be in his compound in Bab al-Aziziya as he earlier promised not to leave the capital. However, Al Arabiya TV channel reports that Muammar Gaddafi is now in a hospital in the town of Tajura.
According to Libyan government representative Musa Ibrahim, there are 65,000 troops protecting the ruling regime. Earlier the rebels claimed that some of the troops had surrendered to them – a remarkable statement, in view of the numerous reports about rebels torturing, beheading and murdering prisoners of war.¬
Earlier reports that the rebels had taken control of the country’s state television complex turned out to be false, with the national TV channel continuing to broadcast songs in support of Muammar Gaddafi. Rebels now admit that from 15 to 20 per cent of Tripoli remains under the control of loyalist troops, contradicting earlier claims that the city was practically under their full control, with the exception of government buildings.
On Sunday night, the rebels advanced through the Libyan capital from three directions – east, south and west – without meeting any significant resistance from the loyalist troops until arriving to the city’s Green Square where they rallied, renaming the area Martyrs’ Square.
A convoy of 22 military vehicles full of government soldiers have arrived in the center and are erecting a barricade near a hotel where Dr. Franklin Lamb, the director of Americans for Middle East Peace, is staying right now.

He said US and other powers had sought excuses to try to take over the country.
“It’s the excuse to intervene and seize a country and its riches,” Chavez said.
Chavez – Gaddafi’s main supporter in Latin America – has consistently denounced the months-long military operation in Libya claiming it is an oil grab by Western powers.

Various articles and videos coming out of the complicit media venues like MSNBC, CNN, and al Jazeera are using clearly staged scenes of “rebels” running around in the streets, some firing guns at no one, others firing a rocket in the air while his “warrior” buddy in a tee-shirt and clean shorts stuffs his fingers in his ears. One might imagine that he would be used to loud noises after all of his “revolutionary” fighting.
Silly reporters (who look like they feel silly) stand in front of a few prop trucks with a handful of “rebel fighters” doing “rebel fighter stuff” which amounts basically to standing around the trucks and pointing and waiting for the cue from the al Jazeera producer to burn the green flag just as the reporter “reports” that they are. It’s broad daylight, the “fighters” are wearing loafers and slacks and the “reporter” is wearing a flack jacket and a combat helmet.
It’s ridiculous beyond words. The only thing that makes it newsworthy is the fact that this kind of moronic propaganda is going to pave the way for an all out “shock and awe” type attack on the people of Libya while the majority of Americans sit back and do nothing for fear of embarrassing their great Peace Prize president before his next election. Thank god for that.
The button down fighters keep posing for al Jazeera videos, hopping up and down, wearing their trendy shades, no one has dirt on their clothes, no one has blood on their patent leather shoes. Go figure. Nice haircuts, manicured nails… hell, even the children are such amazing warriors that they get into the act without even getting dirty. And you want to talk about tough? How about warriors in sandals? Yes sandals… and clean cuffed pants.
They don’t care about the quality of their bullshit anymore. People just aren’t paying attention anything is passable in the world of globalist propaganda these days. Half of this country thinks Obama is a socialist and the other half thinks he’s a liberal. We are beyond stupid and traveling deep into the world of self deception. No one can watch this shit and think it’s real… people just don’t care so long as they have a passable excuse for not doing anything about it.
