Innovation is key to Latin America’s development, says new study
Madrid, 4 May 2011 – Innovation can help Latin America grow its economy, raise productivity, increase trade and improve the lives of its people.

InnovaLatino: Fostering Innovation in Latin America, a study based on a survey of 1 500 manufacturers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay, shows that some countries in Latin America have very innovative business models and marketing methods. The report, produced by INSEAD and the OECD Development Centre with the support of Fundación Telefónica, adds however that overall the region lags behind OECD countries in terms of innovation.

‘Latin America has made great strides in innovation, including in macro-economic-management, pro-poor policies and the development of new business models’ said Mario Pezzini, Director of the OECD Development Centre. ‘However, governments still need to invest more and better on innovation to increase productivity and compete in global markets. ’

As well as the private sector, the public sector has made great strides in promoting innovation in Latin America. For example, Argentina has created a new Ministry of Science Technology and Productive Innovation, which promises to make its innovation policies more coherent, and Chile is using the increased revenues from commodity-exports to support innovation. Other cases of experimentation can be found throughout the region.

Innovation is not just R&D in laboratories,’ notes INSEAD eLab’s Soumitra Dutta. ‘This study will inform Latin American policy makers who can establish the conditions necessary to encourage more firms to push forward the innovation frontier.’

InnovaLatino’s recommendations include:

Take advantage of the region’s economic strength - abundant natural resources - to invest more in research and development and further green innovation. At present, Latin American public and private investment in research and development lags behind OECD countries and emerging Asian economic powers. Latin America spends on average 0.3 percent of GDP on R&D, two percentage points below the OECD average (2.33 percent)1.

Boost innovation by enhancing formal education and linking universities, the business sector and other stakeholders. Spending on education in Latin America is lower than the OECD average and students rank poorly in PISA scores2. Though 75% of companies consider qualified staff essential to their innovation activities, only in one out of five surveyed companies had half of the staff attended university or technical schools.

------------------

Use information systems to monitor and assess innovation policies. The report gives 50 case studies of innovative leadership and projects. For example, innovative ICT– particularly mobile technologies – is collecting and disseminating data, accessing resources from around the world, and connecting rural and low-income communities to better opportunities for growth and development.

Latin America is becoming the source of new forms of innovation that will be imported by the more advanced economies. In fact, according to José María Álvarez-Pallete, chairman of Telefónica Latinoamérica, ‘In the present decade we will see emerging regions introducing to the world more and more of their innovations, which are the result of the application of their creativity to the social and technological challenges they face.’

THE GROWING COVERUP: OSAMA and "THE BIG LIE"

The Growing Coverup: Osama and "The Big Lie"

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=24654
by Larry Chin, Global Research, May 5, 2011
HERE SOME EXTRACTS

The Obama administration and the corporate media are concocting an ever-more elaborate and spectacular theater around the “heroic” murder of the CIA intelligence myth/CIA asset Osama bin Laden. Not content to simply to exploit the 9/11 atrocity for political gain, the administration is heaping new layers of lie and cover-up to the original crime.

The growing cover-up

The desperation is palpable. Just days since the “big announcement”, Obama administration officials have already been forced to backpedal, issuing multiple corrections, adding to the confusion over the location of the killing, whether bin Laden was armed or unarmed, whether there was a “fire fight”, if an alleged wife was involved, the burial at sea, whether to release “graphic photos”, etc. The mainstream corporate media---following approved CIA/White House narratives---is spewing and regurgitating a tidal wave of red herrings that add to the inconsistencies.

Seasoned observers will not be fooled, no matter how many Obama lies, doctored photos, fake footage, lurid new testimonials and CIA pronouncements are pushed forth. As put simply by Paul Craig Roberts:

“As the alleged body has been dumped into the ocean, nothing remains but the word of the US government, which lied about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and al Qaeda connections, about yellowcake, about Iranian nukes, and, according to thousands of experts, about 9/11. Suddenly the government is telling us the truth about bin Laden’s death?”

The “war on terrorism” is a fabrication, war propaganda that continues to serve as the eternal pretext for global resource war. That 9/11 was a false flag operation---that the official story is a lie and cover-up---has been definitively proven in numerous investigations, such as Mike Ruppert’s Crossing the Rubicon, Michel Chossudovsky’s America’s “War on Terrorism”, the work of Paul Thompson, and others.

Osama bin Laden is a product and asset of the CIA. "Al-Qaeda" is a covert operation, a "database" of intelligence legends, exhaustively detailed in the work of Chaim Kupferberg (Part 1 and Part Two). Pakistan’s ISI, a virtual branch of the CIA, was central to 9/11 and a player in subsequent “terror” operations. It is not surprising that Pakistan and the ISI is at the heart of the “death of bin Laden” as well.

The “death of bin Laden” changes nothing about the factual record that indicts (among others) Bush/Cheney, Anglo-American military-intelligence, and elite war/oil interests.

Tragically, none of this matters. The minority of individuals with unscrambled brains is not the target of this imperial charade.

Euphoria, brainwashing, and “imperial mobilization”

Barack Obama, who has spoken incessantly over the years about wanting to “unite” America again “just as it was after 9/11”, has been granted his moment to “unite” the masses again, but do an even better job of population control than Bush/Cheney (who, in their clumsiness and hubris, partially “squandered” their “political capital”). The swaggering Obama will “get it right”. He is a better actor, the more devious and mendacious corporatist who was selected for this specific purpose.

Obama has been itching to be the "Osama killer" since before he was elected.

The 9/11 “shock effect” remains fully potent, as evidenced by the frenzy, euphoria, and stomach-turning jubilation of crowds of Americans joining in celebration orgies over a fictional murder of the fictional Osama bin Laden, a fictional revenge. Even the “intellectuals” and “experts” are treating this charade as if it is real. Corporate media headlines have declared that “the world has changed”, and the masses love it.

The post-9/11 era has spawned an entire generation of vicious and ignorant drones, whose moral compass has been shaped by war, lies, violent entertainment, and brainwashing. The future American police state will be built upon this new culture of thuggery. This is "Obama's Animal Farm".

The final atrocity

To add a grotesque and sickening final insult, the swaggering Barack Obama will grandstand at New York’s Ground Zero, in a staged celebration of a fictional murder, on the hallowed ground where thousands of people actually died at the hands of the US government and its covert operatives.

Obama even invited George W. Bush to share his “victory lap”.

This act of exploitation will dispel all illusions about the criminal nature of this liar who has done Bush/Cheney one better by stooping even lower into the depths of depravity.

WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF DEATH AND INJURY BELOW

May 04, 2011 "Reuters" -- Photographs acquired by Reuters and taken about an hour after the U.S. assault on Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan show three dead men lying in pools of blood, but no weapons.

The photos, taken by a Pakistani security official who entered the compound after the early morning raid on Monday, show two men dressed in traditional Pakistani garb and one in a t-shirt, with blood streaming from their ears, noses and mouths.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, sold the pictures to Reuters.
None of the men looked like bin Laden
. President Barack Obama decided not to release photos of his body because it could have incited violence and used as an al Qaeda propaganda tool, the White House said on Wednesday. [This article continues, open the website above]

NOW : Reed this comments:

1. “Notice the lethal childrens water gun laying behind one of the bodies. Clearly the SEAL Team was reacting to the danger this weapon posed since it could have been filed with the Dr. Evil instant SEAL evaporator liquid.”

2. “What Rothschild-owned Reuters and no one else can be confident about is where the photos were taken and whether Bin Boogie-Woogie was anywhere in the precincts. What an absolute croc. I'm tired of this farce. Instead, I want to have spray about government debt ...

According to Dick Cheney "Reagan proved deficits don't matter". For a brief summary of US public debt, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_U.S._...

But of course, what Cheney meant was “I am very rich and I have assets in Dubai and Switzerland and when I leave this job I will still be richer than God, and able to transfer my assets to other countries, so... the national debt does not matter to me." And so it can be said for the American leadership as a whole. National debt means nothing to them because it is not THEIR debt.

But it doesn’t end there. The whole of Europe is in debt up to its eyeballs.
How is it possible that after 200+ years of unprecedented growth in human history, everyone, everywhere is drowning in debt? The question deserves to be taken very seriously. As it goes to the very heart of the money system we live under. To understand it better, I recommend Ellen Brown’s book the ‘Web of Debt’ which takes as its starting point the modern fable The Wizard of Oz. Written in 1900, the W of O was in fact a financial allegory choc-a-bloc with symbolism which relates the then all-American struggle between the ‘gold bugs’ and the ‘populists’ of the era. But it is a struggle which goes back a long way before that to the very origins of money itself …

However tawdry their origins, the creation of new media of exchange -- coinage appeared almost simultaneously in Greece, India, and China -- appears to have had profound intellectual effects. Some have even gone so far as to argue that Greek philosophy was itself made possible by conceptual innovations introduced by coinage.[…] To put the matter somewhat crudely: if one relegates a certain social space simply to the selfish acquisition of material things, it is almost inevitable that soon someone else will come to set aside another domain in which to preach that, from the perspective of ultimate values, material things are unimportant, and selfishness -- or even the self -- illusory.” - David Graeber … http://blog.longnow.org/2010/04/22/debt-the-first...

Americans are at their most vulnerable
They are vulnerable because they are gullible
They are gullible because they are ignorant
They are ignorant because they are deliberately misinformed.
They can be deliberately misinformed because they don't question what they are told

-------------------------------

When Obama announced Osama Bin Laden dead, it was established as a fact - the truth. Where truth is concerned, it clearly matters where you were born - or else the truth does not matter.

In a 2007 interview, a former Pakistani born president (twice) and a leading opposition candidate favored to win the 2008 general Pakistani elections, Benazir Bhutto, claimed that Omar Sheikh had murdered OBL in an extraordinary interview (see link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnychOXj9Tg), she did not get [re] elected -- she was assassinated. Her allegations were buried by the mainstream media along with her.

Without a doubt, the American-born US President's announcement of OBL's death will extend Barak Obama's occupancy of the White House for another four years. Neither Bhutto nor Obama produced a corpse to back their claim, yet it appears that nationality has its privileges -- that of establishing the truth.

A pertinent question arises: Why would the U.S. put an expiration stamp on the Osama card when it had served the empire so well?

Inarguably, OBL had proven his value. Even in his 'death', he continues to serve the American Empire. We have been duly warned that "U.S. intelligence officials believe Osama bin Laden made a propaganda recording shortly before his death and expect that tape to surface soon." (see here) The possibility of a future tape, puts the Obama administration in the comfortable fall-back position and enable false flag operations when necessary. What dedication. Is it any wonder that OBL was granted his dearest wish -- to die in battle (and not murdered by a fellow Moslem, or sickness, or ..)?

Although OBL was with our consciousness well before 2001, the events of September 11 gave him a new prominence - and for years thereon, he knew when to be silent and when to speak out (apparently the trend will continue after his death). Admittedly, this inordinate ability to speak or be silent took some training - or persuasion.

For three years after 9/11, OBL denied being behind the attacks stating: "Following the latest explosions in the United States, some Americans are pointing the finger at me, but I deny that because I have not done it. The United States has always accused me of these incidents which have been caused by its enemies. Reiterating once again, I say that I have not done it, and the perpetrators have carried this out because of their own interest," (CIA FBIS: Usama bin Laden Statements 1994-2004 , Wikileaks, September 14, 2008). Perhaps the pounding of Afghanistan and Iraq deafened him into submission - or substitution.

In October 2004, a videotape of OBL is broadcast in which he assumes responsibility for 9/11. (The still photo from the 2004 video is worthy of scrutiny. It closely resembles the still image presented alongside Obama on today's C-Span. Although the hair coloring varies, there are two consistencies: the same wide and uncharacteristic nose and the same exact outfit see link - minute 5:25). After three years of only audio messages, in 2007 (after his first publicly announced death), a new videotape of OBL emerged -with a dyed and trimmed beard to please his global audience (see link). This picture is an exact duplicate of the two above mentioned pictures.

It was this incredible image of OBL that prompted me to write my first article about the man. I could not fathom a man devoted to a vigorous practice of fundamental Islam defying the Islamic ideology pertaining to vanity - especially while living in his snug cave. His black trimmed beard was unorthodox. Although he sported a shorter beard, he had set his sight far -- he was analyzing and criticizing the US Democratic Party's moves.

On January 6, 2008, I wrote a second and brief article questioning OBL's absence in the face of Israel's massacre in Gaza. I should have been more patient. Eight days after my article was posted on various sites, a recording accompanied by a still photo of Bin Laden superimposed over the al-Aqsa mosque was delivered. It was heartwarming to know that Gaza had not been forgotten. OBL's audiotapes continued to surface. The man truly kept abreast of current events. In 2010, OBL even asked for the boycott of American goods for not addressing climate change. Way to go OBL!

Contrary to the latest revelations about OBL's living conditions in luxury and probably with the knowledge of Pakistanis, it had always been thought that OBL sent audio messages because he was in a cave or on the run. Now at least, with his demise, we are shown pictures of his corpse. Regrettably, it has been brought to light by The Guardian that the picture of the corpse presented as proof of his demise seems to be old, recycled pictures. Notwithstanding this shortsightedness, we have been deprived of further photo opportunities in an attempt to respect Islamic rituals. US intelligence tell us that OBL's body was dumped into sea in accordance with Islamic burial demands of a 24 hour burial time frame. It is always refreshing to hear that Islam is respected after the many wars against Islamic countries.

So back to the main question:
Why did the United States decide to expire Osama bin Laden at this juncture?

It would be naive to think that the logic behind the expiration stamp is restricted to promoting the incumbent president and uniting a dissatisfied nation (two thirds dissatisfied or angry with the government see link) and rally the people around the flag. It is equally naive to think that the world needed to be distracted from the reality that an attempted assassination of a foreign leader which led to the murder of his family members was a factor. Nor can one attribute this event to the justification of the illegal and immoral CIA-drone killings in Pakistan. There must be more than meets the eye!

Perhaps for the time being, America is so confident in its latest lethal weapon - the pro-democracy cyber dissidents, that it decided to trade the 'war on terror'' with humanitarian imperialism brought about with the help of its cyber dissidents. Such grand gestures of 'humanitarian intervention' to promote democracy require the public consensus. Write OBL's death certificate and the 'good' against evil fight is back on - confident that 'good' will prevail.

No doubt the renewed thrust of the empire into the Middle East to justify democracy, assassinate, and plunder is not new; but the method is novel - democracy's cyber warriors.

Atilio A. Boron, Rebelión MAY 3-11: http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=127653

http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=127669

Enrico Piovesana, Peace Reporter. May 3-11

Lealo Ud:“10 Years Too Long: Rep. Barbara Lee Renews Calls for End to Afghan War After Killing of Osama bin Laden

http://www.democracynow.org/2011/5/3/10_years_too_long_rep_barbara

• AMY GOODMAN: We turn now to our ongoing coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden and the future of the so-called "war on terror." On Monday, the Obama administration released new details of the operation that killed bin Laden at a compound in Pakistan. The White House says bin Laden was shot in the head and chest but that he himself did not return fire. Four others were killed in the raid: three men and one woman. One of bin Laden’s wives was wounded. U.S. officials told the Reuters news agency that while bin Laden would have been taken alive had he surrendered, the Special Forces that carried out the mission were instructed they were on a, quote, "kill operation."

• The raid has further strained ties between the U.S. and Pakistan. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers are calling for a review of billions in aid to Pakistan in light of the revelation bin Laden was living inside a heavily fortified compound in a wealthy Pakistani suburb. Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf criticized the U.S. for attacking the compound without Pakistan’s knowledge, calling it a violation of Pakistani sovereignty.

• Republicans meanwhile have begun to seize on the news intelligence for the raid was partially gathered at U.S. secret prisons in Eastern Europe. In a sarcastic post referring to Obama’s ban on Bush-era torture methods, Congressmember Steve King of Iowa tweeted, quote, "Wonder what President Obama thinks of water boarding now?"

• Here in New York, celebrations continued Monday with crowds of people gathering at Gound Zero, the site of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. At the White House, President Obama said bin Laden’s killing had united the nation.

ANOTHER VERSION THE BEST!!

BERNANKE EASY MONEY: TO BE CONTINUED

http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/breakout/bernanke-lying-bet-against-fed-dollar-peter-schiff-152631496.html

GDP is falling, unemployment is rising, inflation is up and the dollar is down -- and Ben Bernanke is talking his way through it in a way that history has not previously allowed.

Longtime Fed critic and financial doomsayer Peter Schiff is known for a lot of things, but one thing he's not known for is mincing words. And when the CEO of Euro Pacific Capital appeared on Breakout this morning, he didn't disappoint as he launched into a caustic critique of our capital markets and all dollar-denominated investments.

In a rant that was eerily similar to one I posted yesterday on Twitter, Schiff went right for the jugular.Noting that a Bloomberg article called Wednesday's Bernanke press conference a "success," Schiff said that, "As the Fed chairman spoke, the dollar was getting crushed, gold surged to a new high. How do you call that a success? That's like saying the Titanic had a successful crossing just because some passengers happened to make it to New York."

"[Bernanke is] lying," Schiff continued. "The more the Fed insists that inflation is transitory, the more its reputation becomes transitory."

So when King Macke anointed Schiff the new head of the Fed and pressed for him for an action plan, he offered a three-pronged reply: Admit mistakes made in the past, raise rates and stop buying U.S. Treasurys.

"If the Federal Reserve simply had some discipline and raised interest rates," Schiff said, "that would force Congress to cut spending because they'd have no way to cut these bonds."

So how do you put your money to work in this environment?

"My investment strategy is based on the Fed continuously doing the wrong thing," Schiff said. "What you have to do is avoid U.S.-dollar denominated investments. People need to own precious metals like gold and silver, they need to own commodities, they need to own foreign bonds, foreign stocks."

By now, Schiff-watchers are well-acquainted with his anthem mortis, but for those who are unfamiliar with his outlook and philosophy, you're in for an ear-scorching diatribe of doom.
