NEOLIBERALISM IS ACCUMULATION BY DISPOSSESSION

NEOLIBERALISM IS ACCUMULATION BY DISPOSSESSION

Free and democratic capitalism have been replaced by fraud
See THE ‘NEW’ IMPERIALISM: ACCUMULATION BY DISPOSSESSION. By DAVID HARVEY

To David Harvey the central features of neoliberal financial system are:
1- Privatization and commodification of public assets (transferring property from public ownership to private ownership);
2- Financialization (governmental deregulation which has made the financial system one of the main centers of redistributive activity. Stock promotions, Ponzi schemes, structured asset destruction through inflation, asset stripping through mergers and acquisitions, dispossession of assets via raiding of pension funds and their decimation by stock and corporate collapses by credit and stock manipulations).
3- Creating and manipulating crises (by suddenly raising interest rates that force poor nations into bankruptcy; or by forcing them into structural adjustment programs that legitimize chronic  debts, tributary dependency and econ subordination of client regimens to the empire; or by forcing them to singing  FTA with dollar currency, all of this under the control of the U.S. Treasury, World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
4- State redistributive policies and prices-manipulation (the former is done by changing the tax code to profit returns on investment rather than incomes and wages and the later, price manipulation in favor of big corporations,  is documented below).

Energy Prices Manipulated

The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission says that JP Morgan has massively manipulated energy markets in  California and the Midwest, obtaining tens of millions of dollars in overpayments from grid operators between September 2010 and June 2011.
As shown below, Wall Street has manipulated virtually every other market as well – both in the financial sector and the real economy – and broken virtually every law on the books.

Interest Rates Are Manipulated

Bloomberg reported in January:
Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc was ordered to pay $50 million by a federal judge in Connecticut over claims that it rigged the London interbank offered rate.

The Libor interest rate scandal in perspective:
  • Even though RBS and a handful of other banks have been fined for interest rate manipulation, Libor is still being manipulated. No wonder … the fines are pocket change – the cost of doing business – for the big banks

Why? Because the system is rigged to allow the big banks to commit continuous and massive fraud, and then to pay small fines as the “cost of doing business”. As Nobel prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz noted years ago:
“The system is set so that even if you’re caught, the penalty is just a small number relative to what you walk home with.

The fine is just a cost of doing business. It’s like a parking fine. Sometimes you make a decision to park knowing that you might get a fine because going around the corner to the parking lot takes you too much time.”

Experts also say that we have to prosecute fraud or else the economy won’t ever really stabilize.

But the government is doing the exact opposite. Indeed, the Justice Department has announced it will go easy on big banks, and always settles prosecutions for pennies on the dollar (a form of stealth bailout. It is also arguably one of the main causes of the double dip in housing.)
Indeed, the government doesn’t even force the banks to admit any guilt as part of their settlements.

Because of this failure to prosecute, it’s not just interest rates. As shown below, big banks have manipulated virtually every market – both in the financial sector and the real economy – and broken virtually every law on the books.
And they will keep on doing so until the Department of Justice grows a pair.

Currency Markets Are Rigged
Currency markets are massively rigged. And see this and this.

Derivatives Are Manipulated
Indeed, many trillions of dollars of derivatives are being manipulated in the exact same same way that interest rates are fixed: through gamed self-reporting.

Oil Prices Are Manipulated
Oil prices are manipulated as well.

Gold and Silver Are Manipulated
Gold and silver prices are “fixed” in the same way as interest rates and derivatives – in daily conference calls by the powers-that-be.
For both gold and silver commodities there were, on average, no comparable price changes at any other time of the day. These patterns are consistent with manipulation in both markets.

Commodities Are Manipulated
The big banks and government agencies have been conspiring to manipulate commodities prices for decades.

The big banks are taking over important aspects of the physical economy, including uranium mining, petroleum products, aluminum, ownership and operation of airports, toll roads, ports, and electricity.

And they are using these physical assets to massively manipulate commodities prices … scalping consumers of many billions of dollars each year.  More from Matt Taibbi, FDL and Elizabeth Warren.

Everything Can Be Manipulated through High-Frequency Trading
Traders with high-tech computers can manipulate stocks, bonds, options, currencies and commodities. And see this.

Manipulating Numerous Markets In Myriad Ways
The big banks and other giants manipulate numerous markets in myriad ways, for example:
  • Engaging in mafia-style big-rigging fraud against local governments. See this, this and this
  • Shaving money off of virtually every pension transaction they handled over the course of decades, stealing collectively billions of dollars from pensions worldwide. Details here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here
  • Pledging the same mortgage multiple times to different buyers. See this, this, this, this and this. This would be like selling your car, and collecting money from 10 different buyers for the same car
  • Pushing investments which they knew were terrible, and then betting against the same investments to make money for themselves. See this, this, this, this and this
  • Engaging in unlawful “Wash Trades” to manipulate asset prices. See this, this and this
  • Bribing and bullying ratings agencies to inflate ratings on their risky investments
The criminality and blatant manipulation will grow and spread and metastasize – taking over and killing off more and more of the economy – until Wall Street executives are finally thrown in jail.
It’s that simple …

RUSSIAN TIT for TAT IS COMING ON FRANCE, US, ITALY & GERMANY

RUSSIAN TIT for TAT IS COMING ON FRANCE, US, ITALY & GERMANY

IN MY OPINION this is the story of a naked piracy; the Russian retaliation stand to reason. Hugo Adan

FRANCE BANKS PLAY RUSSIAN ROULETTE & Why EUROPE is scared of sanctions against RUSSIA. Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/01/2014

INTRODUCTION by http://www.zerohedge.com

While everyone is by now fully aware just how dependent Europe is on Russia's energy supplies 1 (and most are aware of the "nonsense" that the US will fill any gap if Russia steps up its actions 2 - which Barroso said wouldn't happen because "Russia has self-interest not to play the energy card") but few are truly aware of the scale of contagious debt-driven defaults that could occur if the US (and a reluctant Europe) decide to undertake more aggressive economic sanctions, which, as Germany's Europe minister stated today, "are on the table." As the following chart of Europe's domestic bank exposure to Russia show, Roth's warning that Russia's retaliation could mean "anything is possible," is a major problem for the Germans, Italians, and most of all - The French.

The Graphic: DOMESTIC BANK EXPOSURE TO RUSSIA, You can get in the website above,   OR in http://blogs.cfr.org/geographics/2014/04/30/frenchbanks/#more-2248

Germany is nervous...
ECONOMIC SANCTIONS `ON THE TABLE'; RUSSIA COULD RETALIATE: ROTH SAYS `ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE' IN UKRAINE CRISIS

Because they know what happens if this house of cards falls down...

In the fourth quarter of last year, with tensions rising between Russia and the West over Ukraine, U.S., German, UK, and Swedish banks aggressively dialed down their credit exposures in Russia... but levels remain huge...  [see graphic above]

But as the graphic above shows, French Banks, which have by far the highest exposures to Russia, barely touched theirs.  At $50 billion, this exposure is not far off the $70 billion exposure they had to Greece in 2010.  At that time, they took advantage of the European Central Bank’s generous Securities Market Programme (SMP) to fob off Greek bonds, , effectively mutualizing their Greek exposures across the Eurozone.  No such program will be available for Russian debt.

As much of France’s Russia exposure is illiquid, such as Société Générale’s ownership of Rosbank, Russia’s 9th largest bank by net-asset value ($22 billion).

With the Obama Administration and the European Union threatening to dial up sanctions on Russia, is it time for U.S. money market funds and others to start worrying about their French bank exposures?

The bottom line - it's all well and good to let the people starve, freeze, or stagnate amid a lack of energy supplies... but start fucking our banking exposure … Russian sanctions just got real.. said  Tyler Durden in http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-05-01/france-plays-russian-roulette-why-europe-scared-sanctions-against-russia

OBAMA’S INVISIBLE CRIMINAL WAR

OBAMA’S INVISIBLE CRIMINAL WAR

“Wanton killing of innocent civilians is terrorism, not a war against terrorism”. Noam Chomsky

KILLER DRONES AND OBAMA’S INVISIBLE WAR.   By Ismail Salami. May 01, 2014

In the midst of a crisis which has in recent weeks created a political chasm between Russia and the United States, there is an ongoing carnage in the name of combating terrorism against Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Somalia.

The story of the CIA-led killer drones which are killing women and children on a daily basis is a tale accorded inexcusably scant attention in media. Indeed it is being ignored.

Just recently, the US director of national intelligence James Clapper ordered US senators to remove a provision from a major intelligence bill that would require the president to publicize information about drone strikes and their victims.

The bill originally required the president to release a yearly report clarifying the total number of “combatants” and “noncombatant civilians” killed or injured by drone strikes in the previous year.

Reports clearly indicate the number of drone attacks on Muslim countries has increased tremendously since Barack Obama took office in 2009. Quite ironically, the man who was initially compared to Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize nine months later.

I for one always presumed that George W. Bush was a political retard who thought he was burdened with a messianic mission and that he felt he had to save the world. Quite naturally, the election of a colored president in the US engendered some false hope that there might appear tangible political upheavals in the country in its approach towards the world in general and toward the Muslim world in particular.

To the dismay of many, this dream was however shattered altogether to be ensued by an era of apocalyptic darkness and escalating mass murders in the international arena.

According to the New America Foundation, a Washington-based public-policy institute, Obama authorized 193 drone strikes in Pakistan alone from 2009 to 2011, that is, over four times the number of attacks that President George W. Bush authorized during his two terms.

To date, the liar-in-chief has only acknowledged that the United States has killed four Americans in drone strikes. According to The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Obama has launched over 390 covert drone strikes in his first five years in office and thousands of civilians have been killed in the strikes.

The drone warfare is indeed a war in disguise, a form of war meant to lull American public who are manifestly fed up with their government’s military interventions on the one hand and to vindicate their gory policies through a mechanism of invisibility on the other.

Contrary to their claims that the drones are only used to wipe out the al-Qaida elements in different parts of the Muslim world, their strikes have however proven to kill civilians. Women and children are unfortunately among the routine victims of their ‘targeted’ assassinations.

For the US government, war has taken a new shape, ranging from cyberwar to drone strikes, from assassinations to other forms of covert operations.

It is agonizingly sad to see that certain governments including Pakistan and Yemen have been even collaborating with the CIA, providing them with the space for their inhumane intrusion.

A known victim of the assassination drones attacks is Pakistan which had long declined to admit to the truth that it has long been aware of the attacks and that it has even helped the US government. In 2011, ex-Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf acknowledged that his government clandestinely signed off on US drone attacks. It was actually part of a deal by Washington to help retain the Pakistani strongman in power.

A cable sent in August 2008 and later posted online by Wikileaks, then-US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson mentioned a discussion about drones during a meeting that also involved Malik and then-Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

"Malik suggested we hold off alleged Predator attacks until after the Bajaur operation," Patterson wrote. "The PM brushed aside Rehman's remarks and said, 'I don't care if they do it as long as they get the right people. We'll protest in the National Assembly and then ignore it.' "

Yemen’s president Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi has also confessed that he “personally approves every US drone strike in his country and described the remotely piloted aircraft as a technical marvel that has helped reverse al-Qaeda’s gains.”

Further to that, there are third-party governments which are aiding and abetting Washington in carrying out its massacre of the civilians in Africa by allowing them to use their military sites in the country. According to a report by the German Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, the Stuttgart-based supreme command of the United States Africa Command (US Africom) and the Air Operations Center (AOC) at the US air force base in Ramstein, in the state of Rhineland Palatinate, are directly involved in the drone attacks.

With a morbid mind, former US president George W. Bush, who was incapable of truth, commenced a series of invasions and military expeditions in the Muslim countries, caused inconceivable human losses and left a legacy of horror and bloodshed which came to be followed by his successor Barrack Obama. Then in order to keep up appearances and beguile the American public, Obama who was essentially expected to behave differently took the wars from the battlefields to the towns and exacted an irretrievable toll on the civilians under the banner of fighting terrorism.

By all standards, Obama is a brazen criminal and those who collude with him in perpetrating these acts of atrocity are no better. All of them are indeed under the watchful eyes of God and they shall meet their dismal reckoning.

As Noam Chomsky once said, “Wanton killing of innocent civilians is terrorism, not a war against terrorism.”

U.S., E.U. SANCTIONS ON RUSSIANS AMID UKRAINE CRISIS HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON THE GROUND.

U.S., E.U. SANCTIONS ON RUSSIANS AMID UKRAINE CRISIS HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON THE GROUND.

“No one will stop buying oil or gas because of these sanctions”

Russia declines started before any sanctions were announced.
Targeted officials receiving rewards for their black-list status

By Michael Birnbaum.
[Here only extracts]

MOSCOW — The sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle were supposed to roll back the chaos besetting eastern Ukraine. But here in Russia’s blossoming capital, such a retreat is nowhere to be seen.

Some targets of the sanctions are sitting down for softball interviews on Kremlin-controlled TV channels. Moscow’s stock market rebounded Tuesday for the second day in a row after the latest round of sanctions turned out to be weaker than expected. Chaos is spiraling in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists stormed a regional government building in the roiling city of Luhansk on Tuesday. And tens of thousands of Russian troops remain arrayed on Ukraine’s border.

Russian officials have acknowledged that the sanctions will affect the economy, particularly the technology and defense sectors. But some of the targets have rolled their eyes, saying the United States and Europe are only inflicting wounds on themselves.

Obama administration officials say that Putin may be hesitant about a full-blown invasion of eastern Ukraine because of the threat of wide-ranging freezes targeting the banking and energy sectors, which would wreak havoc on Russia’s economy.

“We believe that [sanctions] can affect Russia’s calculus over time,” a senior administration official told reporters in a background conference call this week. The Moscow stock market is down 13.2 percent for the year, and the ruble is down 7.6 percent against the dollar — but those declines started before any sanctions were announced.

In Moscow, life continues largely as before….  Ahead of a long holiday that begins May 1 and for many Russians will extend until after Victory Day on May 9, news channels have given as much weight to packed tourist flights heading to the newly Russian-controlled Crimea — an autonomous Ukrainian region until last month — as they have to the sanctions.

Russians “are not really feeling those sanctions…  Instead, Russian officials have said that pressure from the sanctions would come at a more leisurely pace.

“The gravity of these measures is absolutely obvious to us,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Tuesday in an interview with Gazeta.ru, a news Web site. He said they were a “revival” of a Cold War sanctions regime in which “countries of the West effectively dropped the Iron Curtain on deliveries of high-technology products to the Soviet Union.”

Some targeted officials, meanwhile, appear to be receiving rewards for their black-list status. Gennady Timchenko, who sold his stake in the Swiss-based oil trader Gunvor last month hours before being hit by U.S. sanctions, was appointed head of the Russian half of the Russian-Chinese Business Council on Tuesday, the Izvestia newspaper reported.

Administration officials must also contend with the risk that sanctions that hurt the Russian economy will also affect those of Europe and the United States, yet another limit on the speed and power of the effort. The Monday listing of Igor Sechin, the head of oil giant Rosneft, will complicate his company’s business relationship with Exxon Mobil, which is exploring the Arctic region with the Russian company.

But sanctions targeting individuals rather than industry sectors are unlikely to have a big effect on behavior, said Kirill Rogov, a senior researcher at the Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy in Moscow. “No one will stop buying oil or gas because of these sanctions” he said.
