1. La idea de las Américas unidas me asalto la mente otra vez. Presiento que los pueblos del sur y del norte tenemos el mismo problema: la dictadura de las grandes corporaciones financieras. La diferencia es que aquí en el norte las manzanas podridas no solo amenazan malograr el cesto interno, también el internacional. La crisis actual es evidencia de ello. Es difícil aquí zafarse de estos, tienen totalmente capturado el Estado y desde allí controlan no solo la dinámica política interna también la de sus clientes. Es más fácil zafarse de las grandes corporaciones en el sur dada la emergencia de nuevos poderes económicos en el mundo.
Creo que una real autonomía frente a la dictadura de las trasnacionales solo será posible si las mentes libres del norte apoyan la autonomía de los estados del Sur. El sur sabe que los pueblos del norte sufren tanto como los del sur y sabe también que aquí hay mucha gente noble y solidaria, que será siempre bienvenida al sur cuando el destino así lo demande. La autonomía y libertad del sur requiere el apoyo de esta gente del norte, con ellos será fácil desamarrar los nudos que los sátrapas del norte y sur han tejido para proteger su pillaje y el greed. Jamás los nativos Uwas de Colombia ni los pueblos de Perú y Ecuador habrían podido enjuiciar a grandes corporaciones por el daño ecológico que causan en el sur sin apoyo de NGOs y lawyers del norte. Aquí empezó la lucha común de los pueblos del norte y el sur contra el común enemigo que tenemos, las grandes corporaciones que expropian aguas y tierras de pueblos nativos y que polucionan y causan severos daños ambientales, sobre todo en el Amazonas, el pulmón de la humanidad.
Tenemos un 2do problema común, la deuda externa y las guerras, ambas drenan la economía y el poder del dólar. Los bancos nacionales del sur están atados a un dólar que cada dia pierde valor y que genera términos de intercambio desigual. Los gobiernos del sur avanzan a la creación de moneda propia, y ya vienen diversificando sus reservas pero tenemos el problema de la banca Federal de los EU que impone condiciones al manejo a la paridad con el dólar. El sur demanda la inmediata condonación de los intereses de la deuda o su condonación total para poder responder a las demandas de crecimiento con desarrollo dentro de la globalización actual. El otro problema adyacente es la militarización de los estados y su subordinación al Pentagono. El proyecto del sur es una región sin guerras ni WMD. No a la deuda y no a las guerras, es lo que une a los pueblos del sur y los del norte contra las grandes corporaciones que se enriquecen con guerras y con la manipulación del dollar.
2. La plataforma mínima de lucha de los pueblos del sur (llamadas pre-condiciones de desarrollo autónomo) incluye cuatro puntos:
a. Cancelación de la deuda externa;
b. Desmilitarización del sur. Ninguna estación militar del Pentágono y devolución de los Falklands y Guantanamo a Argentina y Cuba. Total respeto al proyecto “SUR libre de WMD”;
c. El SUR demanda la urgente desprivatización de recursos y servicios básicos de la región. Entre los recursos que deben ser controlados 50/50 por el Estado y empresas privadas son aquellos que en el mercado internacional tienen valor estratégico como el gas, el petróleo, los minerales, la telefonía y el espacio aéreo-satelital para la comunicación global. Entre los servicios que deben ser desprivatizados y totalmente estatizados están la salud y educación y los que deben ser co-financiados y/o controlados son la vivienda, los parques, el servicio sanitario y la infraestructura vial. Todo esto requiere que el Estado apruebe el impuesto Tobin a toda transacción financiera y que grave aún más el consumo superfluo como el alcohol y el tabaco;
d, Criminalizar la corrupción y la especulación financiera trasnacional, la creación del impuesto Tobin y leyes severas contra los daños ecológicos que provoca la minería, la exploración del gas, petróleo y de radio-activos, si estos afectan a comunidades nativas y pueblos del sur.
2. El objetivo estratégico del sur es crear la unión del sur (UNASUR) sin los problemas que hoy afectan a la unión del norte (USA). La desigualdad en el sur es peor que la del norte y se requiere aqui un sistema político ultra-dinamico que coloque al Estado como gestor económico y controlador de las desigualdades que genera el liberalismo y que a la vez promueva la inversión productiva internacional. Se requiere dotar a los gobiernos de la Union Sur (UNASUR) de mínimos de gobernabilidad democrática. La gobernabilidad y su adyacente la legitimidad son el eje de la democracia y ello supone dotar al gobierno electo de mecanismos de poder para que pueda implementar el proyecto por el cual fue elegido por el pueblo. La habilidad del régimen para generar apoyos y consensos al programa de gobierno y la rapidez para corregir errores , darán cuenta de su efectividad, pero jamás deberán poner en juicio su legitimidad democrática. El respeto a la Constitución y/o su reforma mediante referéndum nacional ; el respeto a leyes internacionales, si estas no vulneran la soberanía interna, la habilidad para generar estabilidad política y el respeto a los derechos humanos son ingredientes que hablan de buen gobierno.
3. La democracia no es un fin en si mismo, es solo un medio para lograr un fin. El objetivo final es crear un sistema de economía post-liberal orientado al mercado interior-exterior y a partir de tres ejes: Estado e Inversionistas (FDI), como gestores mayores y las asociaciones de empresarios medianos y pequeños como autogestores de desarrollo interno. El sistema tiene un solo objetivo mayor, el desarrollo económico-social a partir del interés público (o el de la Nación) y dos objetivos menores, la competencia creativa -no canibalesca- entre empresarios y el respeto a los derechos laborales. Hablamos de una democracia orientada al mercado interno y externo con fuerte control estatal y social. No es exactamente capitalismo ni socialismo lo que se proyecta como sistema sino una combinación de ambos con la autogestión cooperativa y comunal tanto al nivel productivo como en lo referido al manejo de las finanzas. Que ya hay algo de esto en los países llamados BRIC es muy cierto y también en los países escandinavos y en la misma Alemania de Europa. La transición a esta llamada “market-based democracy” es la tendencia contemporánea de mayor dinamismo hoy y a esto debemos apuntar.

A veces la luz se opaca en este país y brotan rayos oscuros, como si surgieran de un hoyo negro en el universo, esos que se tragan la luz, y hay vistazos de un país anulado, sofocado de miedo e ignorancia, o simplemente profundamente desencantado entre tanta promesa incumplida de cambio y, por ser superpotencia, las consecuencias de esto se extienden por el universo.
Una gama demasiado amplia de políticos, religiosos y otros niega el fenómeno del cambio climático; otra rechaza la teoría de la evolución documentada por Darwin; otros se sienten amenazados por mexicanos, centroamericanos, musulmanes, judíos, africanos, gays, lesbianas, ciertos libros, ciertas ideas, etcétera.
Parte del temor proviene de la sensación de vivir en un país donde todo lo que pensaban que era suyo y permanente se deshace frente a ellos por fuerzas que no entienden, sobre las cuales no tienen ningún poder, sean empresas trasnacionales, bancos, políticas económicas hechas por y para otros, que de repente les hace perder sus viviendas, sus empleos, sus granjas. Nadie les explica cómo fue que, jugando con las reglas, quedaron sin nada, como si todo hubiera sido una trampa.
Se arman –más de 200 millones de armas de fuego en manos privadas– con la justificación de que tienen derecho a defenderse ante fuerzas que amenazan sus vidas. La televisión y otros medios no cesan de hablar de las amenazas que provienen del extranjero, como las que nacen aquí adentro del país.
De ahí surgen las milicias armadas de ultraderecha, los millones que integran los movimientos cristianos fundamentalistas y la proliferación de agrupaciones de odio. Según el Southern Poverty Law Center, que se dedica a observar la derecha extrema, hoy día hay 1001 grupos de odio que operan en el país, incluyendo neonazis, integrantes del Klan, nacionalistas blancos y vigilantes fronterizos, entre otros. Reporta que desde el año 2000 el número de grupos de odio se ha incrementado 69 por ciento, nutrido por ira y temor sobre condiciones económicas, el flujo de migrantes y la disminución de la población blanca (que, según el censo, en unos 30 o 40 años pasará a ser una minoría más en este país). El número de milicias se ha incrementado 755 por ciento en los primeros años del gobierno de Barack Obama (en parte en respuesta a la elección del primer afroestadunidense en la Casa Blanca) y ahora suman mil 274, reporta el centro (uno de estos grupos fue involucrado en el atentado terrorista contra el edificio federal en Oklahoma City).
Este crecimiento del extremismo ha sido ayudado por figuras de los medios masivos de comunicación y políticos que han usado sus plataformas para legitimizar propaganda falsa sobre inmigrantes y otras minorías y difundir las teorías de conspiración paranoicas que nutren a estos grupos de milicia, informa el centro.
Otras expresiones de todo esto se exhiben en la ola antimigrante que ha abrumado a la política en estados como Arizona, Alabama y Carolina del Norte. También se expresa en ataques contra la educación, como en Arizona, donde el gobierno estatal ha buscado anular los estudios latinos, o sea, el estudio de la historia de los latinos (mexicano-estadunidenses en ese estado), sus contribuciones, su literatura y sus vínculos y raíces en el hemisferio. El año pasado, el procurador general del estado declaró que un programa de estudios mexicano-estadunidense en Tucson era ilegal conforme a una nueva ley promovida por él cuando era jefe de educación pública del estado, con el argumento de que sólo promueve una identidad separada en lugar de fundirla con la historia oficial (anglo), y que tiene efectos peligrosos. Entre los libros señalados como peligrosos está Pedagogía de los oprimidos, de Paulo Freire. El nuevo jefe de educación pública quiere promover la prohibición de estos estudios en las universidades estatales.
Otros gobiernos estatales han prohibido ciertos libros peligrosos y han obligado a las escuelas a ofrecer, junto con la teoría de la evolución, la versión bíblica de la creación del mundo. En Texas se desarrolla un esfuerzo no sólo para dar una visión cristiana a las ciencias, sino a los textos de historia también, resaltando las figuras ortodoxas cristianas y omitiendo la palabra esclavitud, entre otras revisiones.
Por otro lado, continúan los esfuerzos estatales contra el derecho de las mujeres a optar por el aborto, incluida más violencia (se investigan incendios en dos consultorios de médicos que ofrecen servicios de aborto en Georgia), mientras grupos de defensa de este derecho emitieron alertas a clínicas en todo el país, reportó el Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
A la vez, continúa la ofensiva contra la comunidad gay, con estados que aprueban medidas para prohibir toda unión o matrimonio homosexual, mientras no faltan las expresiones homofóbicas, como la del reverendo Charles Worley en Carolina del Norte, que apenas la semana pasada comentó a sus fieles que las lesbianas y los gays deberían ser confinados en campos rodeados de barreras electrificadas hasta que mueran, ya que no pueden reproducirse.
Hasta hay ecos del macartismo. El mes pasado el representante federal Allen West, republicano de Florida, declaró en un foro público: yo creo que hay de 78 a 81 miembros (del Congreso federal) del Partido Demócrata que son miembros del Partido Comunista. Su jefe de campaña indicó, como evidencia, que algunos habían viajado a Cuba y han elogiado a Fidel Castro, y subrayó que el representante defiende sus comentarios, ya que esa gente se opone al capitalismo y al mercado libre y la libertad económica individual.
Estas son sólo algunas de las fuerzas oscuras que padece este país, junto con las expresiones de luz que también han surgido en rebeliones cívicas en lugares como Wisconsin, o el fenómeno de Ocupa Wall Street. Como en toda crisis, brota lo peor junto con lo mejor. Nunca se sabe quién ganará. Pero bienvenida cualquier luz en medio de las tinieblas estadunidenses.

On Friday, 93% of the U.S. House of Representatives affirmed a resolution escalating America’s already aggressive position on Iran, from “crippling” sanctions to a zero-tolerance policy on nuclear weapons. The Congressional Research Service summarized the bill:
Affirms that it is a vital national interest of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability and warns that time is limited to prevent that from happening. Urges increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran to secure an agreement that includes: (1) suspension of all uranium enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, (2) complete cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding Iran’s nuclear activities, and (3) a permanent agreement that verifiably assures that Iran’s nuclear program is entirely peaceful. Supports: (1) the universal rights and democratic aspirations of the Iranian people, and (2) U.S. policy to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. Rejects any U.S. policy that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear weapons-capable Iran. Urges the President to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability and oppose any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat. (emphasis mine)
The resolution passed the House 401-11, with a few representatives absent and a few abstaining. This means it had massive bipartisan support – for those of you who only consider Republicans to be warmongers: 166 of 190 Democrats voted in support, including some of its ostensibly most progressive members, such as Barney Frank and Rush Holt.
The language used bodes terribly for the United States’ already disastrous and destructive foreign policy. The House affirms not merely that Iran will not be allowed to manufacture nuclear weapons, but that it will not be permitted the capability of said manufacturing. Never mind that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta observedthat Iran is not actually pursuing these weapons; given the extreme and persistent threats from the nuclear-armed Israel and United States, coupled with the U.S. forces surrounding Iran, we would have no right to prevent them if they were.
Further, examining the House’s reasoning for denouncing Iran as a repressive regime highlights severe hypocrisy:
Whereas, on December 26, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution denouncing the serious human rights abuses occurring in Iran, including torture, cruel and degrading treatment in detention, the targeting of human rights defenders, violence against women, and ‘the systematic and serious restrictions on freedom of peaceful assembly’, as well as severe restrictions on the rights to ‘freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief.’
Switch in that paragraph “the United States” for “Iran” and you might think we should be sanctioning ourselves. Regarding the first several accusations, consider this: the United States tortures foreign adversaries by proxy, abuses accused whistle-blowers in prison before trial, detains more prisoners than any country on Earth, and continues to pass state laws assaulting women’s rights.
Perhaps the most hypocritical, though, is the accusation of the repression of peaceful assembly. Just two days after the House passed this resolution, Chicago riot police beat protesters with nightsticks, hit others with CPD vehicles, and used sound canons to disrupt peaceful demonstrators against the NATO summit. So the idea that the U.S. deems Iran a barbaric nation that represses political speech is extremely two-faced at best.
The worst part about the bill, though, is not what policies it specifically introduces or accusations it announces but rather what it signifies more broadly: the U.S. is taking the next step in the war on Iran that has already begun.
For one thing, Israel has already teamed up with a U.S.-backed terror group within Iran to assassinate nuclear scientists, serving both the temporary, practical purpose of inhibiting Iran’s nuclear progress and the long-term, psychological purpose of instilling fear within Iran and its fledgling nuclear program.
More insidiously, the U.S. has imposed severe sanctions on Iran that most describe as “crippling” and that all should describe as acts of war. Just today, the Senate voted unanimously to escalate those very sanctions. While President Obama may say that sanctions are intended to isolate Iran’s leaders in their nuclear position, it is citizens who bear the burden of these economic moves. Look to Iraq for the devastating effects, where a senior U.N. official estimated that U.N.-imposed sanctions in the 1990s killed a staggering 500,000 children under the age of 5. They don’t call ‘em “crippling” for nothing.
We should also look to Iraq to understand how this bipartisan process of escalation works, from sanctions to bombing to occupation. Arguing against sanctions on Iran in April 2010, Rep. Ron Paul recalled how sanctions on Iraq led inevitably to war:
Some of my well-intentioned colleagues may be tempted to vote for sanctions on Iran because they view this as a way to avoid war on Iran. I will ask them whether the sanctions on Iraq satisfied those pushing for war at that time. Or whether the application of ever-stronger sanctions in fact helped war advocates make their case for war on Iraq: as each round of new sanctions failed to “work” – to change the regime – war became the only remaining regime-change option.
This legislation, whether the House or Senate version, will lead us to war on Iran. The sanctions in this bill, and the blockade of Iran necessary to fully enforce them, are in themselves acts of war according to international law. A vote for sanctions on Iran is a vote for war against Iran. I urge my colleagues in the strongest terms to turn back from this unnecessary and counterproductive march to war.
The Iraq war did not begin with the 2003 invasion – it began with the 1990s embargo. Sanctions on Iraq not only killed hundreds of thousands, but they structured the narrative on Iraq to winnow out peaceful options on the path to war. And the same is true of Iran. Now debates on Iran focus on whether Ahmadinejad will relent in his pursuit of weapons, whether sanctions are “working” sufficiently, or where the U.S. and Israel should draw “red lines” for attack.
President Obama called last month’s “negotiations” with Iran that country’s “last chance,” effectively threatening to escalate sanctions or initiate an attack if Iran didn’t cease and desist its nuclear enrichment program entirely. How are those “negotiations”? How is that “diplomacy”? Threatening Iran to completely submit to the U.S.’s will to get nothing in return is not a discussion – it’s bullying.
What would Iran have to gain in that situation? Iran is seeking to defend itself from nuclear-armed bullies surrounding it constantly. Passively complying would only speed up the U.S. plan to replace the Iranian regime with one even more compliant.
But the United States will not relent on Iran – just as it did not relent on Iraq. Examine again the House resolution’s first principle:
…it is a vital national interest of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability and warns that time is limited to prevent that from happening.
Compare that with President Bill Clinton’s 1998 remarks on Iraq:
One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line.
This is how American bipartisanship – or more accurately, duopoly – works. Both parties want war with Iran, the way both parties wanted war with Iraq. It is in both of their interests – appeasing Israel and its chief lobby, AIPAC, and posturing for their respective bases.
Republicans take the hard line on our “enemies,” using blatantly aggressive language, refusing to “apologize for America” and reducing our victims to less than human.
Democrats take the more “pragmatic” approach, adopting “national security” rhetoric based in protecting Americans that disguises the exact same policies. The Senate vote to go to war with Iraq, after all, didn’t barely squeak through on Republican support: it passed 96-4. (Now, 9/11 catalyzed the whole process in Iraq and made dissent even less popular, but the biggest antiwar protest in recorded history couldn’t sway more than four measly votes in the Senate.)
This endless posturing is how President Obama can be accused of being “soft on terror” and simultaneously escalate sanctions on Iran and massive drone campaigns in Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia.
This is why, in the interest of war, sanctions by one party is a huge gift to the other. If Mitt Romney is elected this year, he’ll likely announce that Obama’s sanctions were insufficient and encourage an Israeli attack on Iran behind closed doors. If Obama is re-elected, he’ll continue on the path he’s currently on: allowing Israel to assassinate Iranian scientists, officially recognizing the terror group seeking regime change in Iran, and escalating sanctions that cripple the Iranian people and isolate its leaders.

Obama can do hawkish things as a Democrat that a Republican could not (or at least not without facing lots of trouble on the home front). It’s the flipside of the old “Nixon Goes to China” meme: Obama can do hawkish things without facing (much) criticism from the left, because he still retains their sympathy and because liberals and non-interventionists don’t have a credible alternative (sorry, Ron Paul supporters). If someone like John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, or George W. Bush had spent the past few years escalating drone attacks, sending Special Forces into other countries to kill people without the local government’s permission, prosecuting alleged leakers with great enthusiasm, and ratcheting up sanctions against Iran, without providing much information about exactly why and how we were doing all this, I suspect a lot of Democrats would have raised a stink about some of it. But not when it is the nice Mr. Obama that is doing these things.
So if you vote for Barack Obama because you think that Mitt Romney would put troops on the ground, you’ll only be doing it to make yourself feel better. You’ll be playing right into the partisan posturing that seeks to fabricate a meaningful difference between the two major parties, both with long histories of support for wars of aggression. You’ll be fundamentally misunderstanding how American duopoly works: both parties decry each other for tactically approaching the same policies differently in the interest of electing their own representatives to power. Both parties want war – they just want to play it to their respective bases properly.
If you think Al Gore wouldn’t have invaded Iraq, that Ralph Nader ruined the antiwar movement and George Bush is all to blame, point me to where Gore opposed Clinton’s sanctions on Iraq when he was Vice President. In the meantime, read how Gore argued for regime change in Iraq a few short months before Bush invaded: “Iraq’s search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power.”
If you think Bush’s war was a terrible mistake that warranted John Kerry’s election in 2004, read Kerry on Iraq two months before the invasion:
Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime … He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation … And now he is miscalculating America’s response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction … So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real…
Liberals criticize President Obama for escalating drone strikes, failing to close Guantanamo, aggressively persecuting Bradley Manning, illegally invading Libya, offering cuts to Social Security, and immunizing the war crimes and torture of the Bush administration – but many same liberals say that despite all of these transgressions, the ostensible likelihood of Mitt Romney attacking Iran makes them feel they have to re-elect the president.
If this were true, wouldn’t these liberals be criticizing Obama’s sanctions on Iran? Wouldn’t they have abandoned Clinton, Gore, and Kerry after their comments on Iraq? More to the point, if these liberals despise war so much, why aren’t Obama’s surge in Afghanistan or expanded wars in Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen deal-breakers for re-election?
If you actually don’t want war with Iran, you have to help end duopoly. You can’t support either of the two establishment parties who feed the military-industrial complex and fear-monger voters into submission. We must make it known that the people want peace – meaning no sanctions, no assassinations, no threats of war.
We must make war making and fear mongering unacceptable. Come Election Day, we can vote third party, or boycott the election, or protest to shut down military recruitment centers or drone bases. But we can’t fund or vote for the war parties – our victims can’t afford it. No votes for empire, no money for war. No exceptions.

On Friday, 93% of the U.S. House of Representatives affirmed a resolution escalating America’s already aggressive position on Iran, from “crippling” sanctions to a zero-tolerance policy on nuclear weapons. The Congressional Research Service summarized the bill:
Affirms that it is a vital national interest of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability and warns that time is limited to prevent that from happening. Urges increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran to secure an agreement that includes: (1) suspension of all uranium enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, (2) complete cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding Iran’s nuclear activities, and (3) a permanent agreement that verifiably assures that Iran’s nuclear program is entirely peaceful. Supports: (1) the universal rights and democratic aspirations of the Iranian people, and (2) U.S. policy to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. Rejects any U.S. policy that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear weapons-capable Iran. Urges the President to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability and oppose any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat. (emphasis mine)
The resolution passed the House 401-11, with a few representatives absent and a few abstaining. This means it had massive bipartisan support – for those of you who only consider Republicans to be warmongers: 166 of 190 Democrats voted in support, including some of its ostensibly most progressive members, such as Barney Frank and Rush Holt.
The language used bodes terribly for the United States’ already disastrous and destructive foreign policy. The House affirms not merely that Iran will not be allowed to manufacture nuclear weapons, but that it will not be permitted the capability of said manufacturing. Never mind that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta observedthat Iran is not actually pursuing these weapons; given the extreme and persistent threats from the nuclear-armed Israel and United States, coupled with the U.S. forces surrounding Iran, we would have no right to prevent them if they were.
Further, examining the House’s reasoning for denouncing Iran as a repressive regime highlights severe hypocrisy:
Whereas, on December 26, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution denouncing the serious human rights abuses occurring in Iran, including torture, cruel and degrading treatment in detention, the targeting of human rights defenders, violence against women, and ‘the systematic and serious restrictions on freedom of peaceful assembly’, as well as severe restrictions on the rights to ‘freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief.’
Switch in that paragraph “the United States” for “Iran” and you might think we should be sanctioning ourselves. Regarding the first several accusations, consider this: the United States tortures foreign adversaries by proxy, abuses accused whistle-blowers in prison before trial, detains more prisoners than any country on Earth, and continues to pass state laws assaulting women’s rights.
Perhaps the most hypocritical, though, is the accusation of the repression of peaceful assembly. Just two days after the House passed this resolution, Chicago riot police beat protesters with nightsticks, hit others with CPD vehicles, and used sound canons to disrupt peaceful demonstrators against the NATO summit. So the idea that the U.S. deems Iran a barbaric nation that represses political speech is extremely two-faced at best.
The worst part about the bill, though, is not what policies it specifically introduces or accusations it announces but rather what it signifies more broadly: the U.S. is taking the next step in the war on Iran that has already begun.
For one thing, Israel has already teamed up with a U.S.-backed terror group within Iran to assassinate nuclear scientists, serving both the temporary, practical purpose of inhibiting Iran’s nuclear progress and the long-term, psychological purpose of instilling fear within Iran and its fledgling nuclear program.
More insidiously, the U.S. has imposed severe sanctions on Iran that most describe as “crippling” and that all should describe as acts of war. Just today, the Senate voted unanimously to escalate those very sanctions. While President Obama may say that sanctions are intended to isolate Iran’s leaders in their nuclear position, it is citizens who bear the burden of these economic moves. Look to Iraq for the devastating effects, where a senior U.N. official estimated that U.N.-imposed sanctions in the 1990s killed a staggering 500,000 children under the age of 5. They don’t call ‘em “crippling” for nothing.
We should also look to Iraq to understand how this bipartisan process of escalation works, from sanctions to bombing to occupation. Arguing against sanctions on Iran in April 2010, Rep. Ron Paul recalled how sanctions on Iraq led inevitably to war:
Some of my well-intentioned colleagues may be tempted to vote for sanctions on Iran because they view this as a way to avoid war on Iran. I will ask them whether the sanctions on Iraq satisfied those pushing for war at that time. Or whether the application of ever-stronger sanctions in fact helped war advocates make their case for war on Iraq: as each round of new sanctions failed to “work” – to change the regime – war became the only remaining regime-change option.
This legislation, whether the House or Senate version, will lead us to war on Iran. The sanctions in this bill, and the blockade of Iran necessary to fully enforce them, are in themselves acts of war according to international law. A vote for sanctions on Iran is a vote for war against Iran. I urge my colleagues in the strongest terms to turn back from this unnecessary and counterproductive march to war.
The Iraq war did not begin with the 2003 invasion – it began with the 1990s embargo. Sanctions on Iraq not only killed hundreds of thousands, but they structured the narrative on Iraq to winnow out peaceful options on the path to war. And the same is true of Iran. Now debates on Iran focus on whether Ahmadinejad will relent in his pursuit of weapons, whether sanctions are “working” sufficiently, or where the U.S. and Israel should draw “red lines” for attack.
President Obama called last month’s “negotiations” with Iran that country’s “last chance,” effectively threatening to escalate sanctions or initiate an attack if Iran didn’t cease and desist its nuclear enrichment program entirely. How are those “negotiations”? How is that “diplomacy”? Threatening Iran to completely submit to the U.S.’s will to get nothing in return is not a discussion – it’s bullying.
What would Iran have to gain in that situation? Iran is seeking to defend itself from nuclear-armed bullies surrounding it constantly. Passively complying would only speed up the U.S. plan to replace the Iranian regime with one even more compliant.
But the United States will not relent on Iran – just as it did not relent on Iraq. Examine again the House resolution’s first principle:
…it is a vital national interest of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability and warns that time is limited to prevent that from happening.
Compare that with President Bill Clinton’s 1998 remarks on Iraq:
One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line.

Recently reported in “Brookings Announces Next Move in Syria: War,” it was stated that “by the US policy think-tank Brookings Institution’s own admission, the Kofi Annan six-point peace plan in Syria was merely a ploy to buy time to reorganize NATO’s ineffective terrorist proxies and provide them the pretext necessary for establishing NATO protected safe havens from which to carry out their terrorism from.”
It was also examined in detail, how in 2007, US, Saudi, and Israeli officials admitted they were creating a militant front of extremists for the sole purpose of causing the destabilization of Syria we see today, and ultimately overthrowing the Syrian government. It was noted how these extremist militants had direct ties to Al Qaeda.
Now it is fully admitted that weapons, cash, and logistical support is indeed being provided to terrorist forces in Syria by the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other Gulf States. This, despite a current UN ceasefire the West has continuously berated the Syrian government for violating, indicates that indeed reorganizing, rearming, and redeploying NATO’s terrorist proxies is complete, and another round of destructive violence has begun.
In the Washington Post’s article, “Syrian rebels get influx of arms with gulf neighbors’ money, U.S. coordination,” not only is this admitted, but claims made by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have been confirmed that Syria’s historically violent Muslim Brotherhood, stated in 2007 by Seymour Hersh as being a direct proxy of US-Saudi-Israeli funding and support, is also directly arming and funding contingents of extremists committing acts of terror across Syria.
Areas across Syria that have until now been portrayed as centers for “pro-democracy” protests, racked by violence depicted as “repression” by Syrian troops, are now admitted by the Washington Post to be areas where “material is being stockpiled.”
This includes the flashpoint city of Idlib on the Turkish-Syrian border, in the suburbs of Damascus, and along Syria’s border with Lebanon. And again, in 2007, Seymour Hersh revealed that the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia had planned to array extremists along Syria’s border to commit the very violence now being admitted by the Post today.
The Washington Post openly admits that these weapons, supplies, cash and support, provided by the US and Saudi Arabia are directly responsible for the increased violence in Syria, in the midst of a ceasefire the West has attempted to disingenuously use to defame the Syrian government, hamper its ability to restore order, and indeed, rearm, reorganize, and redeploy their terrorist proxies to begin another attempt at violent foreign-backed regime change:
“The effect of the new arms appeared evident in Monday’s clash between opposition and government forces over control of the rebel-held city of Rastan, near Homs. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebel forces who overran a government base had killed 23 Syrian soldiers.” -Washington Post, May 16, 2012
The Post also admitted that Washington, again, in the midst of a UN ceasefire, was attempting to trigger yet more violence, this time in areas controlled by Syria’s Kurds who have remained out of the predominately foreign-backed conflict.
Paradoxically, the US and Gulf State military support being funneled into Syria to purposefully flare violence in the midst of a UN ceasefire, is continuing even after the Pentagon has admitted Al Qaeda is present and active in Syria, this after terrorist groups claimed responsibility for a series of bombings that have killed mostly civilians.
And in the midst of this admitted attempt to increase violence and chaos, the Washington Post also declared that NATO-member Turkey would be pressured to invoke Article IV of the NATO Charter, allowing NATO to militarily intervene to “stop” violence they openly admit they are creating.
Unlike previous conflicts – the US’ admission is not a hamhanded obfuscation of the their intentions, but an open declaration of intent to provoke a war of aggression – a Nuremberg offense for all involved. In fact, direct parallels between Adolf Hitler’s September 1938 campaign of destabilization in Czechoslovakia, and NATO’s current destabilization of Syria have been made by noted geopolitical analysts.
A historical conviction handed down by the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission, finding former-US President George W. Bush guilty of war crimes, sets a precedent to be used against those committing war crimes today, and of course a model to be expanded upon, including methods and official calls to impose sanctions on organizations and institutions supporting leaders committing war crimes, including both the policy think tanks engineering the war crimes and boycotting and banning the corporations and institutions funding these think-tanks.
This does not require an act by the UN, or your national government. You can begin boycotting these corporations today and thus begin undermining the authority and impunity from which they operate.

Even if the House accepts a proposed amendment by John Conyers (D-MI) to state that the authorization is not a specific declaration of war, the bill still calls for aggressive redeployment of our armed services to begin "credible, visible preparations for a military option."

The first undermines a diplomatic solution with Iran and lowers the bar for war. The second authorizes a war of choice against Iran and begins military preparations for it.
H.Res.568: Eliminating the Most Viable Alternative to War
The House is expected to vote on H.Res. 568. Read the resolution. Section (6) rejects any United States policy that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear weapons-capable Iran. Section (7) urges the President to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability and opposition to any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to Iranian enrichment.
This language represents a significant shift in U.S. policy and would guarantee that talks with Iran, currently scheduled for May 23, would fail. Current U.S. policy is that Iran cannot acquire nuclear weapons. Instead, H. Res. 568 draws the "redline" for military action at Iran achieving a nuclear weapons "capability," a nebulous and undefined term that could include a civilian nuclear program. Indeed, it is likely that a negotiated deal to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran and to prevent war would provide for Iranian enrichment for peaceful purposes under the framework of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty with strict safeguards and inspections. This language makes such a negotiated solution impossible.
At the same time, the language lowers the threshold for attacking Iran. Countries with nuclear weapons "capability" could include many other countries like Japan or Brazil. It is an unrealistic threshold.
The Former Chief of Staff of Secretary of State Colin Powell has stated that this resolution "reads like the same sheet of music that got us into the Iraq war."
H.R. 4310: Authorizing War Against Iran and Preparing the Military for it
While H. Res. 568 undermines our diplomatic efforts and lowers the bar for war, H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 begins military preparations for war. Section 1221 makes military action against Iran a U.S. policy. Section 1222 directs our armed forces to prepare for war.
SEC. 1221. DECLARATION OF POLICY.
(a) Findings- Congress makes the following findings:
(2) At the same time, Iran may soon attain a nuclear weapons capability, a development that would threaten United States interests, destabilize the region, encourage regional nuclear proliferation, further empower and embolden Iran, the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and provide it the tools to threaten its neighbors, including Israel.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as U.S. and Israeli intelligence, have all agreed that Iran does not currently have a nuclear bomb, is not building a nuclear weapon and does not have plans to do so. Both U.S. and Israeli officials also agree that a strike on Iran would only delay their nuclear program and actually encourage them to pursue a nuclear weapon.
Sustained, diplomatic engagement with Iran is the only way to ensure transparency and prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. Rejecting or thwarting any inspections-based deal we are currently seeking with Iran, even when analysts are expressing guarded optimism that a near term deal is achievable, makes pre-emptive military action against Iran more likely.
(7) In order to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, the United States, in cooperation with its allies, must utilize all elements of national power including diplomacy, robust economic sanctions, and credible, visible preparations for a military option.
Pursuing these non-diplomatic options, contrary to popular myth, does not help negotiations. U.S. policy toward Iran for the last three decades has primarily taken the form of economic sanctions, threats and isolation. None of these things has created meaningful change in the behavior of the Iranian government or achieved the transparency we seek. In fact, history has demonstrated that sanctions often preclude war; they do not prevent it. Sanctions hurt the same ordinary Iranians that we claim to support, and undermine their efforts to encourage democratic change in their country. Threatening military action against Iran can only undermine sensitive and critical diplomatic negotiations that could be our last chance to achieve the transparency and cooperation we seek from the Iranian government.
(8) Nevertheless, to date, diplomatic overtures, sanctions, and other non-kinetic actions toward Iran have not caused the Government of Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
The United States, IAEA and Israel have all publically recognized that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program. In a January 2012 interview on CBS' Face the Nation, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta stated unequivocally that Iran is not trying to build a nuclear weapon. This clause further ignores that the U.S. and Iran have barely engaged in direct negotiations. Prior to last month's negotiations, the U.S. and Iran had only engaged in 45 minutes of direct talks since 2009.
(b) Declaration of Policy- It shall be the policy of the United States to take all necessary measures, including military action if required, to prevent Iran from threatening the United States, its allies, or Iran's neighbors with a nuclear weapon.
This is an authorization for the use of military force against Iran. It ignores the warnings of both current and former U.S. top military brass who have spoken in opposition to the use of military force against Iran, including former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and current Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. A February 2012 poll demonstrated that less than 20% of the Israeli public supports an Israeli strike on Iran if approved by the United States. Congress must avoid the same mistakes it made in the Iraq war and reject any language that can be construed as authorizing war against Iran.
SEC. 1222. UNITED STATES MILITARY PREPAREDNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
Section 2 (A) pre-positioning sufficient supplies of aircraft, munitions, fuel, and other materials for both air- and sea-based missions at key forward locations in the Middle East and Indian Ocean;
(B) maintaining sufficient naval assets in the region necessary to signal United States resolve and to bolster United States capabilities to launch a sustained sea and air campaign against a range of Iranian nuclear and military targets, to protect seaborne shipping, and to deny Iranian retaliation against United States interests in the region;
(D) conducting naval fleet exercises similar to the United States Fifth Fleet's major exercise in the region in March 2007 to demonstrate ability to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and to counter the use of anti-ship missiles and swarming high-speed boats.
A plain reading of these provisions in H.R. 4310 taken together with H.R. 568 makes it clear: Congress is setting the stage for war with Iran.

El ajedrez es un juego fascinante y, además, se deriva del viejo shatranj persa. El gran poeta Hakim Abul-Qasim Firdusi (935-1020/1025, se desconoce la fecha exacta de su muerte pero fue entre esos años) en su obra Shahnama (“El libro de los reyes”) se hace eco del origen indio de este juego, el chaturanga, y explica que fue debido a una polémica sobre el enfrentamiento entre dos hermanos al trono que fue resuelta por un grupo de sabios al reproducir sobre el suelo una batalla entre ellos. Los sabios ordenaron la construcción de estatuillas de madera oscura y marfil representando al rey, su general, dos elefantes (“fil”, en farsi), dos carruajes y dos caballeros junto con sus respectivos soldados. Reprodujeron la batalla y sus variantes, en términos reducidos, y así llegó el juego a Persia, hoy Irán, de la mano de Firdusi.
Firdusi es el gran poeta persa por excelencia. Escribió el Shahnama enteramente en farsi, un hecho crucial para el mantenimiento del idioma ante el empuje del árabe que iba en paralelo con la expansión del islam. Firdusi se islamizó, pero mantuvo su lengua. El Shahnama es una gran epopeya, la gran obra nacional iraní, y le llevó 30 años completarla.
Casi 10 años es lo que lleva el llamado “contencioso nuclear” con Irán. La historia parte de los inicios de 2003, cuando el entonces presidente iraní, Muhammad Jatami, ofreció suspender su programa nuclear a cambio de una normalización plena con los Estados Unidos y, por supuesto, el fin de las sanciones que este país mantiene contra la República Islámica desde el triunfo de la revolución islámica en 1979. Hay quien dice que Jatami no hizo su propuesta en el momento idóneo, que se produjo cuando se gestaba la invasión y ocupación neocolonial de Irak y que lo que menos quería el entonces presidente de EEU, George W. Bush, era un acuerdo con su archienemigo. De hecho, dado que EEUU no tiene relaciones diplomáticas con Irán, es Suiza quien representa los intereses estadounidenses en Teherán. Pues bien, Bush llegó al extremo de “reprender” a Suiza por haber, simplemente, dado curso a la oferta de Jatami. A pesar de la negativa de Bush, Irán hizo un gesto de buena voluntad en noviembre de ese mismo año al suspender voluntariamente todas las fases de ejecución del proyecto de enriquecimiento de uranio de Natanz a raíz de un acuerdo suscrito con Alemania, Gran Bretaña y Francia.
La suspensión estuvo vigente hasta el año 2005, al no cumplir los europeos los compromisos suscritos en 2003, y sólo fue parcialmente levantada al reiniciarse el proceso en Isfahan. La reanudación del proyecto nuclear iraní era un aviso de que la situación no se podía postergar en el tiempo, que los europeos tenían que cumplir lo firmado y para no romper la baraja y demostrar que seguía teniendo buena voluntad en el tema nuclear en septiembre de 2005, en la Asamblea General de la ONU, el nuevo presidente de Irán, Mahmoud Ajamadineyad, dio un paso más allá: en un gesto sin precedentes, invitó a empresas extranjeras tanto privadas como estatales a participar en las actividades nucleares de Natanz cuando ésta central fuese reabierta, suponiendo que ello sería el golpe de gracia al temor de los occidentales sobre los fines pacíficos del programa civil atómico de Teherán. Más tarde se concretó que esta participación extranjera en el programa nuclear podía realizarse hasta en un 35%. Los países occidentales hicieron caso omiso de ese anuncio y desoyendo la protesta iraní por los incumplimientos –básicamente consistentes en entregar a Irán el combustible necesario para la investigación médica- exigieron “más transparencia” en el programa nuclear para seguir adelante con el acuerdo.
En consecuencia, Irán decidió que había sido víctima de un engaño y dio por finalizada la suspensión, lo que dio pie al incremento de las sanciones ahora bajo el paraguas de la ONU, en 2006. La historia, desde entonces, es más o menos conocida.
Occidente tiene una larga lista de promesas incumplidas con Irán respecto al tema nuclear. El último, cuando en 2010 Irán llegó a un acuerdo con Turquía y Brasil para intercambiar combustible y tanto Rusia como Francia, este país en menor medida, se mostraron partidarios de aceptar dicho acuerdo pero las presiones de EEUU hicieron inviable cualquier movimiento en ese sentido. Y eso, pese a que el acuerdo partía de los presupuestos pedidos por EEUU. Por eso Irán ha hecho bien en no fiarse de Occidente, en no someterse a las presiones y en continuar desarrollando su capacidad nuclear hasta el punto de conseguir enriquecer el uranio hasta el 20%, límite para los reactores de investigación pero insuficiente para ser utilizado para fabricar bombas atómicas, que precisan un uranio enriquecido al 90%.
CESE DEL ENRIQUECIMIENTO DE URANIO
Este es el movimiento que está jugando ahora Irán en la partida de ajedrez de las reiniciadas conversaciones nucleares el pasado mes en Estambul (13-14 de abril) y que tendrán su continuidad en Bagdad el 23 de mayo. Irán ha iniciado la partida con un gambito, un sacrificio de material para tomar una pequeña ventaja. Aunque es un movimiento que se puede contrarrestar, cuando se acepta el gambito se pierde un cierto tiempo en reorganizar las piezas. Esa es la baza iraní. Su gambito es cesar de enriquecer uranio al 20%, el punto donde fracasaron las anteriores conversaciones. Ahora lo ofrece porque ha demostrado que tiene capacidad para hacerlo y tras haber perfeccionado su tecnología para producirlo pese a los sabotajes (como el gusano informático Stuxnet, con el que se trató de impedirlo) y los asesinatos de científicos nucleares.
Al contrario que en otras ocasiones, ahora Irán está mejor preparado para jugar la partida. Puede ofrecer una concesión porque ya ha demostrado que tiene capacidad para ir más allá y ha enrocado al rey: la central de Fordo, escavada en una montaña, es difícil de bombardear y, por lo tanto, prácticamente indestructible. Esta es la razón por la que Occidente insiste en que Irán debe parar, y desmantelar, dicha central. De nada sirve bombardear otras centrales si se deja una en funcionamiento, puesto que lo más que se hará será retrasar un proceso que es ya irreversible. Esa es la razón por la que se ha vuelto a la mesa de conversaciones.
Todos tienen algo de lo que felicitarse. Occidente, porque considera que las sanciones a que viene sometiendo al país persa le han obligado a sentarse a negociar. Los iraníes, porque han demostrado que no se les puede doblegar. En este sentido, es muy aleccionador el editorial del diario Kayhan, el diario más influyente y directamente dependiente de la oficina del líder supremo religioso, Alí Jamanei: “Hasta ahora, siempre que los americanos hablaban de fomento de la confianza por parte de Irán sólo significaba una cosa, que Irán debe detener cualquier tipo de enriquecimiento; pero hoy en día ya reconocen explícitamente que se puede aceptar un nivel del 3’5-5%. Por lo tanto, la era de la negación del derecho de Irán a participar en el enriquecimiento de uranio ha terminado” (1).
Unos y otros cuentan con elementos para tener razón. Pero lo cierto es que se ha llegado a esta situación en situaciones muy diferentes. Occidente ya no está en disposición de dictar condiciones por mucho que sus propagandistas mediáticos así lo presenten. El hecho de haber tenido que aceptar que la segunda ronda de conversaciones se celebre en Bagdad es, en sí, una victoria para Irán. Tras la postura de Irak en la reciente cumbre de la Liga Árabe, donde se opuso a las pretensiones injerencistas de los países del Golfo en Siria, es un golpe sutil a Occidente y a sus aliados árabes. Incluso es un golpe a Turquía, que había despreciado Bagdad como lugar para la continuación de las conversaciones, por su papel en la crisis siria.
Por si fuese poco, el sexteto (EEUU, Francia, Gran Bretaña, Rusia, China y Alemania) está dividido. Rusia y China han pedido a ambas partes “flexibilidad” y han afirmado con vehemencia su condena a un hipotético ataque contra Irán. Las diferencias entre ellos y los occidentales son cada vez más grandes y ambos países han expresado la legitimidad de Irán para usar la energía nuclear dentro de los parámetros del Tratado de No Proliferación y su derecho a enriquecer uranio para los reactores comerciales y de investigación. Ya lo pusieron de manifiesto cuando el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU adoptó las últimas sanciones, en 2010 (2) y esta es la razón por la que ahora Occidente acepta el desarrollo nuclear de Irán –antes pedía el abandono total- con fines civiles, incluyendo el enriquecimiento de uranio al 3’5-5%. Una muestra de hasta qué punto Rusia y China defienden a Irán es el anuncio del contratista ruso de la central de Bushehr referente a que la planta nuclear comenzará a funcionar a pleno rendimiento “a partir del 23 de mayo” (3). Es decir, el mismo día del reinicio de las conversaciones nucleares en Bagdad. La compañía contratista, Atomstroyexport, no podría haber hecho semejante anuncio sin el visto bueno del gobierno ruso.
Este es un asunto irrenunciable para Irán, puesto que su gran temor es que sin energía nuclear pueda consumir todo su petróleo a nivel nacional, como por ejemplo ha ocurrido en Indonesia, dejando al gobierno sin un excedente de ingresos con los que mantener su libertad de acción frente a las presiones internacionales. Es decir, de ello depende su independencia como país. Como dicen los iraníes, Francia obtiene casi el 80% de la electricidad que consume de las centrales nucleares, por lo que ellos tienen el mismo derecho. Además, las sanciones occidentales, que han sido diseñadas para lograr un cambio de régimen y no para influir en la cuestión nuclear, están afectando a la clase media iraní que, en las elecciones legislativas de marzo, se ha volcado casi masivamente con los candidatos más conservadores y ha hecho de la cuestión nuclear un tema de orgullo nacional. Sorprendentemente, la participación en ellas ha sido del 65% -casi el doble que en las de EEUU para el Congreso, por dar un dato-. Esto pone de manifiesto que hay que olvidarse, al menos por el momento, del famoso “Movimiento Verde” que protestó en las elecciones presidenciales de 2009 argumentando que habían sido fraudulentas y que la sociedad iraní ha girado hacia una posición más conservadora y nacionalista.
La nueva composición del Majlis (Parlamento) ha provocado un realineamiento de las facciones y camarillas, los denominados “principalistas”, alrededor de la figura del líder supremo religioso, Jamenei, y un cierto declive de los más aperturistas, entre ellos el presidente Ahmadinejad. Esto ha hecho que la estructura de poder en Irán sea ahora mucho más homogénea que hace un año. Por eso cobran más valor las declaraciones de Jamenei afirmando que nunca van a fabricar la bomba porque desde un punto de vista religioso las armas nucleares son “ilegales”.
Es evidente que pese al triunfalismo iraní sobre que las sanciones son ineficaces, en especial el corte de compra de petróleo a partir de julio decidido por la UE, plegándose a las exigencias estadounidenses, sí les están haciendo daño. Irán dice que su exportación es incluso mayor que antes de esta decisión -2’26 millones de barriles diarios, como corrobora el portal económico Bloomberg (4)-, pero la dificultad que tiene Irán tras haber sido relegado de la Sociedad para las Telecomunicaciones Financieras Interbancarias Mundiales (SWIFT) hace que tenga problemas para comprar alimentos básicos, como el trigo, ya que no puede utilizar el sistema bancario internacional para el pago. Esta inmoralidad de Occidente, muy similar a lo ocurrido con Irak durante el gobierno de Saddam Hussein, puede provocar si no una hambruna sí un aumento de la mortalidad en los niños. El embajador iraní en Rusia, Reza Sajjadi, hizo no hace mucho tiempo una alusión implícita a ello (5) al afirmar que tratarían de evitar que el embargo de petróleo sea efectivo al cien por cien a partir del mes de julio. En la referencia de Sajjadi no hay que fijarse en el petróleo, sino en el SWIFT. Arabia Saudita ha aumentado la cantidad de petróleo que bombea para permitir a los países europeos sustituir las compras de petróleo iraní, pero los expertos dudan de la capacidad saudita de mantenerlo en el tiempo. Irán tiene poca preocupación respecto a este factor puesto que sus principales clientes son los países asiáticos (64% del total de sus ventas), a quienes hay que sumar bastantes países de América Latina y África. Por lo tanto, la preocupación es otra, el SWIFT.
¿CUÁL ES LA GANANCIA IRANÍ?
El gambito es un movimiento ajedrecístico que proporciona una cierta ganancia. En este caso, y dado que la mayoría de las sanciones impuestas no se han apoyado en la cuestión nuclear sino en el “apoyo al terrorismo” y en las “violaciones de los derechos humanos”, la ganancia iraní será modesta, por lo que la partida continuará desarrollándose. EEUU ha convertido en ley muchas de esas sanciones y eso, con una mayoría republicana tanto en el Congreso como en el Senado, hace difícil que se reviertan. Y menos en un año electoral como éste. Por lo tanto, Irán no puede –y lo sabe- exigir el levantamiento de las sanciones sino el “decaimiento” de ellas. Es decir, que vayan decayendo por sí mismas en una especie de “relajación gradual”. Lo que sí va a exigir es el retorno inmediato al SWIFT.
EEUU, en una etapa marcada por las elecciones presidenciales de noviembre, no va a abandonar la “diplomacia coercitiva” y cuenta con el seguidismo irracional de la UE, incapaz de contar con una política exterior propia. Por lo tanto, y en el mejor de los casos, se mostrarán dispuestos reconocer el derecho de Irán a enriquecer uranio en suelo iraní pero exigiendo límites estrictos sobre el número de centrifugadoras y el porcentaje de enriquecimiento, que puede quedarse en el 3’5%, la fase más baja. Que EEUU está incómodo con la reanudación de las conversaciones y que es consciente que el gambito iraní le coloca en una situación defensiva se escenifica en que el secretario adjunto del Tesoro para el Financiamiento Terrorista (sic), Daniel Glaser, ha efectuado una gira entre los días 3 y 15 de mayo –junto antes de iniciarse la segunda ronda en Bagdad- por Arabia Saudita, Kuwait, Catar, Israel y Emiratos Árabes Unidos para buscar apoyo a la promulgación de nuevas sanciones comerciales y financieras contra Siria e Irán (6). Si uno de los jugadores juega sucio, la partida no llegará a buen puerto, pero sí se desarrollará hasta esas elecciones presidenciales estadounidenses. De ahí que ahora todos los actores –incluyendo a Israel- mencionen la fecha del 2013 como el año clave en la cuestión nuclear iraní.
Con el gambito iraní la partida cambia de casillas y los movimientos se centrarán en el cierre de Fordo, que es la gran exigencia israelí, por lo que son los iraníes quienes, indirectamente, tienen en sus manos el resultado de las elecciones estadounidenses y la relección de Obama. En las anteriores elecciones presidenciales, el 78% del voto judío fue al Partido Demócrata y, hoy por hoy, son mayoría los judíos que dentro y fuera de Israel se oponen a cualquier ataque a Irán. El reciente anuncio de Netanyahu sobre la posibilidad de un adelanto electoral en Israel al mes de septiembre, justo antes de las presidenciales estadounidenses, -aparcado momentáneamente tras un acuerdo de última hora con el Kadima-va en la dirección de intentar reforzar su mayoría de gobierno y presionar así tanto a Obama como a la comunidad judía de EEUU. Este acuerdo de última hora israelí también tiene como finalidad mostrar a EEUU la “unidad nacional” del estado sionista contra el país persa. Irán se ha cansado de las críticas occidentales, se ha negado hasta ahora a hacer concesiones y ha respondido a las amenazas con más amenazas, como el cierre del estrecho de Ormuz. En contra de las versiones occidentales sobre la imposibilidad de dicho cierre por la acumulación de navíos occidentales en el Golfo Pérsico, hay un factor con el que no se cuenta y que, a la postre, será definitivo para equilibrar la balanza: los submarinos. En una partida de ajedrez no se puede ir de farol.
Informes estadounidenses consideran que Irán tiene una veintena de submarinos de todo tipo, especialmente de la clase Qaaem o Fateh, considerados “semi pesados”. Es decir, son algo menores que los tradicionales, con capacidad reducida para llevar torpedos o misiles pero con una mayor movilidad. Son una evolución de los “mini submarinos” de que dispone Corea del Norte. Si se tiene en cuenta que el Golfo Pérsico no es muy profundo, que está lleno de restos de naufragios a lo largo de los tiempos y que los grandes submarinos occidentales difícilmente pueden maniobrar allí, los iraníes cuentan con una ventaja que puede llevar a las tablas en la partida. Irán está aplicando la misma táctica que Corea del Norte cuando dice que convertirá Seúl en “un mar de fuego” si es atacado. En este caso, el Seúl iraní son las monarquías del Golfo.
El nerviosismo en ellas es cada vez más evidente. Han perdido la apuesta siria, han visto cómo la siempre ineficaz Liga Árabe, que habían tomado al asalto y con la que habían arropado su estrategia injerencista y sectaria en Libia y Siria, se está desmoronando y a punto de desaparecer –de ahí que cada vez hablen menos de ella y más del Consejo de Cooperación del Golfo- y ahora ven con estupor cómo la “calle árabe” se resiste a entrar en su juego sectario. Es significativo que el 82% de los egipcios manifieste que prefiere la ayuda económica de Irán a la de EEUU, según una encuesta de la estadounidense Gallup (7). No es casual que unos pocos días después de hacerse pública dicha encuesta Arabia Saudita haya ofrecido 500 millones de dólares a Egipto “para cubrir el déficit presupuestario” (8) y ello en unos momentos en los que las relaciones entre los dos países no atraviesan sus mejores momentos tras el cierre temporal de la embajada saudita en El Cairo por las protestas ciudadanas ante el encarcelamiento de un abogado egipcio que había demandado a los saudíes por el maltrato de los presos egipcios en el reino árabe, estimados en unos 400. El Arabia Saudita hay un millón de trabajadores egipcios. Es muy probable que en el momento de publicarse este artículo la embajada saudita se haya abierto de nuevo porque el clima enrarecido de Egipto perjudica claramente a Arabia Saudita, y eso no puede permitírselo la monarquía wahabita.
Los saudíes están rápidamente posicionándose ante lo que puede ser el golpe definitivo a su estrategia sectaria si hay algún tipo de acuerdo con Irán. Pretenden reforzar los niveles de cooperación entre los países del Golfo y llegar a “la unión política” (9), para lo que plantean la federación con Bahrein (10) como “primer paso”. Si se concretan estos planes, la Liga Árabe habrá muerto formalmente y el mundo árabe comenzará a andar por otros caminos. Y no será sólo por las luchas de sus pueblos, con mayor o menor acierto, sino también por la resistencia de Irán convertido ya en la potencia incuestionable de la zona.

El ajedrez es un juego fascinante y, además, se deriva del viejo shatranj persa. El gran poeta Hakim Abul-Qasim Firdusi (935-1020/1025, se desconoce la fecha exacta de su muerte pero fue entre esos años) en su obra Shahnama (“El libro de los reyes”) se hace eco del origen indio de este juego, el chaturanga, y explica que fue debido a una polémica sobre el enfrentamiento entre dos hermanos al trono que fue resuelta por un grupo de sabios al reproducir sobre el suelo una batalla entre ellos. Los sabios ordenaron la construcción de estatuillas de madera oscura y marfil representando al rey, su general, dos elefantes (“fil”, en farsi), dos carruajes y dos caballeros junto con sus respectivos soldados. Reprodujeron la batalla y sus variantes, en términos reducidos, y así llegó el juego a Persia, hoy Irán, de la mano de Firdusi.
Firdusi es el gran poeta persa por excelencia. Escribió el Shahnama enteramente en farsi, un hecho crucial para el mantenimiento del idioma ante el empuje del árabe que iba en paralelo con la expansión del islam. Firdusi se islamizó, pero mantuvo su lengua. El Shahnama es una gran epopeya, la gran obra nacional iraní, y le llevó 30 años completarla.
Casi 10 años es lo que lleva el llamado “contencioso nuclear” con Irán. La historia parte de los inicios de 2003, cuando el entonces presidente iraní, Muhammad Jatami, ofreció suspender su programa nuclear a cambio de una normalización plena con los Estados Unidos y, por supuesto, el fin de las sanciones que este país mantiene contra la República Islámica desde el triunfo de la revolución islámica en 1979. Hay quien dice que Jatami no hizo su propuesta en el momento idóneo, que se produjo cuando se gestaba la invasión y ocupación neocolonial de Irak y que lo que menos quería el entonces presidente de EEU, George W. Bush, era un acuerdo con su archienemigo. De hecho, dado que EEUU no tiene relaciones diplomáticas con Irán, es Suiza quien representa los intereses estadounidenses en Teherán. Pues bien, Bush llegó al extremo de “reprender” a Suiza por haber, simplemente, dado curso a la oferta de Jatami. A pesar de la negativa de Bush, Irán hizo un gesto de buena voluntad en noviembre de ese mismo año al suspender voluntariamente todas las fases de ejecución del proyecto de enriquecimiento de uranio de Natanz a raíz de un acuerdo suscrito con Alemania, Gran Bretaña y Francia.
La suspensión estuvo vigente hasta el año 2005, al no cumplir los europeos los compromisos suscritos en 2003, y sólo fue parcialmente levantada al reiniciarse el proceso en Isfahan. La reanudación del proyecto nuclear iraní era un aviso de que la situación no se podía postergar en el tiempo, que los europeos tenían que cumplir lo firmado y para no romper la baraja y demostrar que seguía teniendo buena voluntad en el tema nuclear en septiembre de 2005, en la Asamblea General de la ONU, el nuevo presidente de Irán, Mahmoud Ajamadineyad, dio un paso más allá: en un gesto sin precedentes, invitó a empresas extranjeras tanto privadas como estatales a participar en las actividades nucleares de Natanz cuando ésta central fuese reabierta, suponiendo que ello sería el golpe de gracia al temor de los occidentales sobre los fines pacíficos del programa civil atómico de Teherán. Más tarde se concretó que esta participación extranjera en el programa nuclear podía realizarse hasta en un 35%. Los países occidentales hicieron caso omiso de ese anuncio y desoyendo la protesta iraní por los incumplimientos –básicamente consistentes en entregar a Irán el combustible necesario para la investigación médica- exigieron “más transparencia” en el programa nuclear para seguir adelante con el acuerdo.
En consecuencia, Irán decidió que había sido víctima de un engaño y dio por finalizada la suspensión, lo que dio pie al incremento de las sanciones ahora bajo el paraguas de la ONU, en 2006. La historia, desde entonces, es más o menos conocida.
Occidente tiene una larga lista de promesas incumplidas con Irán respecto al tema nuclear. El último, cuando en 2010 Irán llegó a un acuerdo con Turquía y Brasil para intercambiar combustible y tanto Rusia como Francia, este país en menor medida, se mostraron partidarios de aceptar dicho acuerdo pero las presiones de EEUU hicieron inviable cualquier movimiento en ese sentido. Y eso, pese a que el acuerdo partía de los presupuestos pedidos por EEUU. Por eso Irán ha hecho bien en no fiarse de Occidente, en no someterse a las presiones y en continuar desarrollando su capacidad nuclear hasta el punto de conseguir enriquecer el uranio hasta el 20%, límite para los reactores de investigación pero insuficiente para ser utilizado para fabricar bombas atómicas, que precisan un uranio enriquecido al 90%.
CESE DEL ENRIQUECIMIENTO DE URANIO
Este es el movimiento que está jugando ahora Irán en la partida de ajedrez de las reiniciadas conversaciones nucleares el pasado mes en Estambul (13-14 de abril) y que tendrán su continuidad en Bagdad el 23 de mayo. Irán ha iniciado la partida con un gambito, un sacrificio de material para tomar una pequeña ventaja. Aunque es un movimiento que se puede contrarrestar, cuando se acepta el gambito se pierde un cierto tiempo en reorganizar las piezas. Esa es la baza iraní. Su gambito es cesar de enriquecer uranio al 20%, el punto donde fracasaron las anteriores conversaciones. Ahora lo ofrece porque ha demostrado que tiene capacidad para hacerlo y tras haber perfeccionado su tecnología para producirlo pese a los sabotajes (como el gusano informático Stuxnet, con el que se trató de impedirlo) y los asesinatos de científicos nucleares.

La nueva composición del Majlis (Parlamento) ha provocado un realineamiento de las facciones y camarillas, los denominados “principalistas”, alrededor de la figura del líder supremo religioso, Jamenei, y un cierto declive de los más aperturistas, entre ellos el presidente Ahmadinejad. Esto ha hecho que la estructura de poder en Irán sea ahora mucho más homogénea que hace un año. Por eso cobran más valor las declaraciones de Jamenei afirmando que nunca van a fabricar la bomba porque desde un punto de vista religioso las armas nucleares son “ilegales”.
Es evidente que pese al triunfalismo iraní sobre que las sanciones son ineficaces, en especial el corte de compra de petróleo a partir de julio decidido por la UE, plegándose a las exigencias estadounidenses, sí les están haciendo daño. Irán dice que su exportación es incluso mayor que antes de esta decisión -2’26 millones de barriles diarios, como corrobora el portal económico Bloomberg (4)-, pero la dificultad que tiene Irán tras haber sido relegado de la Sociedad para las Telecomunicaciones Financieras Interbancarias Mundiales (SWIFT) hace que tenga problemas para comprar alimentos básicos, como el trigo, ya que no puede utilizar el sistema bancario internacional para el pago. Esta inmoralidad de Occidente, muy similar a lo ocurrido con Irak durante el gobierno de Saddam Hussein, puede provocar si no una hambruna sí un aumento de la mortalidad en los niños. El embajador iraní en Rusia, Reza Sajjadi, hizo no hace mucho tiempo una alusión implícita a ello (5) al afirmar que tratarían de evitar que el embargo de petróleo sea efectivo al cien por cien a partir del mes de julio. En la referencia de Sajjadi no hay que fijarse en el petróleo, sino en el SWIFT. Arabia Saudita ha aumentado la cantidad de petróleo que bombea para permitir a los países europeos sustituir las compras de petróleo iraní, pero los expertos dudan de la capacidad saudita de mantenerlo en el tiempo. Irán tiene poca preocupación respecto a este factor puesto que sus principales clientes son los países asiáticos (64% del total de sus ventas), a quienes hay que sumar bastantes países de América Latina y África. Por lo tanto, la preocupación es otra, el SWIFT.
¿CUÁL ES LA GANANCIA IRANÍ?
El gambito es un movimiento ajedrecístico que proporciona una cierta ganancia. En este caso, y dado que la mayoría de las sanciones impuestas no se han apoyado en la cuestión nuclear sino en el “apoyo al terrorismo” y en las “violaciones de los derechos humanos”, la ganancia iraní será modesta, por lo que la partida continuará desarrollándose. EEUU ha convertido en ley muchas de esas sanciones y eso, con una mayoría republicana tanto en el Congreso como en el Senado, hace difícil que se reviertan. Y menos en un año electoral como éste. Por lo tanto, Irán no puede –y lo sabe- exigir el levantamiento de las sanciones sino el “decaimiento” de ellas. Es decir, que vayan decayendo por sí mismas en una especie de “relajación gradual”. Lo que sí va a exigir es el retorno inmediato al SWIFT.
EEUU, en una etapa marcada por las elecciones presidenciales de noviembre, no va a abandonar la “diplomacia coercitiva” y cuenta con el seguidismo irracional de la UE, incapaz de contar con una política exterior propia. Por lo tanto, y en el mejor de los casos, se mostrarán dispuestos reconocer el derecho de Irán a enriquecer uranio en suelo iraní pero exigiendo límites estrictos sobre el número de centrifugadoras y el porcentaje de enriquecimiento, que puede quedarse en el 3’5%, la fase más baja. Que EEUU está incómodo con la reanudación de las conversaciones y que es consciente que el gambito iraní le coloca en una situación defensiva se escenifica en que el secretario adjunto del Tesoro para el Financiamiento Terrorista (sic), Daniel Glaser, ha efectuado una gira entre los días 3 y 15 de mayo –junto antes de iniciarse la segunda ronda en Bagdad- por Arabia Saudita, Kuwait, Catar, Israel y Emiratos Árabes Unidos para buscar apoyo a la promulgación de nuevas sanciones comerciales y financieras contra Siria e Irán (6). Si uno de los jugadores juega sucio, la partida no llegará a buen puerto, pero sí se desarrollará hasta esas elecciones presidenciales estadounidenses. De ahí que ahora todos los actores –incluyendo a Israel- mencionen la fecha del 2013 como el año clave en la cuestión nuclear iraní.
Con el gambito iraní la partida cambia de casillas y los movimientos se centrarán en el cierre de Fordo, que es la gran exigencia israelí, por lo que son los iraníes quienes, indirectamente, tienen en sus manos el resultado de las elecciones estadounidenses y la relección de Obama. En las anteriores elecciones presidenciales, el 78% del voto judío fue al Partido Demócrata y, hoy por hoy, son mayoría los judíos que dentro y fuera de Israel se oponen a cualquier ataque a Irán. El reciente anuncio de Netanyahu sobre la posibilidad de un adelanto electoral en Israel al mes de septiembre, justo antes de las presidenciales estadounidenses, -aparcado momentáneamente tras un acuerdo de última hora con el Kadima-va en la dirección de intentar reforzar su mayoría de gobierno y presionar así tanto a Obama como a la comunidad judía de EEUU. Este acuerdo de última hora israelí también tiene como finalidad mostrar a EEUU la “unidad nacional” del estado sionista contra el país persa. Irán se ha cansado de las críticas occidentales, se ha negado hasta ahora a hacer concesiones y ha respondido a las amenazas con más amenazas, como el cierre del estrecho de Ormuz. En contra de las versiones occidentales sobre la imposibilidad de dicho cierre por la acumulación de navíos occidentales en el Golfo Pérsico, hay un factor con el que no se cuenta y que, a la postre, será definitivo para equilibrar la balanza: los submarinos. En una partida de ajedrez no se puede ir de farol.
Informes estadounidenses consideran que Irán tiene una veintena de submarinos de todo tipo, especialmente de la clase Qaaem o Fateh, considerados “semi pesados”. Es decir, son algo menores que los tradicionales, con capacidad reducida para llevar torpedos o misiles pero con una mayor movilidad. Son una evolución de los “mini submarinos” de que dispone Corea del Norte. Si se tiene en cuenta que el Golfo Pérsico no es muy profundo, que está lleno de restos de naufragios a lo largo de los tiempos y que los grandes submarinos occidentales difícilmente pueden maniobrar allí, los iraníes cuentan con una ventaja que puede llevar a las tablas en la partida. Irán está aplicando la misma táctica que Corea del Norte cuando dice que convertirá Seúl en “un mar de fuego” si es atacado. En este caso, el Seúl iraní son las monarquías del Golfo.
El nerviosismo en ellas es cada vez más evidente. Han perdido la apuesta siria, han visto cómo la siempre ineficaz Liga Árabe, que habían tomado al asalto y con la que habían arropado su estrategia injerencista y sectaria en Libia y Siria, se está desmoronando y a punto de desaparecer –de ahí que cada vez hablen menos de ella y más del Consejo de Cooperación del Golfo- y ahora ven con estupor cómo la “calle árabe” se resiste a entrar en su juego sectario. Es significativo que el 82% de los egipcios manifieste que prefiere la ayuda económica de Irán a la de EEUU, según una encuesta de la estadounidense Gallup (7). No es casual que unos pocos días después de hacerse pública dicha encuesta Arabia Saudita haya ofrecido 500 millones de dólares a Egipto “para cubrir el déficit presupuestario” (8) y ello en unos momentos en los que las relaciones entre los dos países no atraviesan sus mejores momentos tras el cierre temporal de la embajada saudita en El Cairo por las protestas ciudadanas ante el encarcelamiento de un abogado egipcio que había demandado a los saudíes por el maltrato de los presos egipcios en el reino árabe, estimados en unos 400. El Arabia Saudita hay un millón de trabajadores egipcios. Es muy probable que en el momento de publicarse este artículo la embajada saudita se haya abierto de nuevo porque el clima enrarecido de Egipto perjudica claramente a Arabia Saudita, y eso no puede permitírselo la monarquía wahabita.
Los saudíes están rápidamente posicionándose ante lo que puede ser el golpe definitivo a su estrategia sectaria si hay algún tipo de acuerdo con Irán. Pretenden reforzar los niveles de cooperación entre los países del Golfo y llegar a “la unión política” (9), para lo que plantean la federación con Bahrein (10) como “primer paso”. Si se concretan estos planes, la Liga Árabe habrá muerto formalmente y el mundo árabe comenzará a andar por otros caminos. Y no será sólo por las luchas de sus pueblos, con mayor o menor acierto, sino también por la resistencia de Irán convertido ya en la potencia incuestionable de la zona.

La retórica de Obama sobre same-sex-marriage es un acto de oportunismo
político que en absoluto cambia el contexto socio-económico e ideológico
que afecta a las parejas del mismo sexo. Es una retórica más de las muchas
que jamás vinieron acompañadas de políticas concretas que las reafirmen y
las hagan creíbles. Cuando Obama tuvo poder para hacer algo por brindar lo prometido en salud educación y derechos sociales, el prefirió beneficiar a las grandes corporaciones que financiaron su candidatura.
Cuando su poder le fue recortado por la nación, Obama uso más retorica para afirmar supuestas buenas intenciones pero inefectivas pues ya no tenía mayoría en las instancias de poder en Washington. Su retórica devino manipulación artera mientras en temas “hot issue” que si afectan al pueblo americano firmo pactos y contubernio con la oposición a la que hoy critica.
Hemos visto por tanto el continuismo más indecente de Bush y los neo-cons en lo que se refiere a salud educación y seguridad interna y externa. La economía sigue siendo tan inestable como ayer. Nada se hizo para limitar el poder de las grandes corporaciones ni sancionar a quienes usaron métodos especulativos ilícitos para generar una crisis no solo interna sino internacional de la que aún no salimos y que de hecho ha empeorado. Al contrario, el apoyó a los crooks con los bailouts, impagos aun. La política continuista de Bush y Obama han generado una bomba de tiempo que pronto habrá de estallar: la explosiva desigualdad social que las FFAA jamás podrán controlar sin generar una guerra interna.
Hay recortes al medicaid and medicare que todos sufrimos directamente, hay una inflación oculta que viene devaluando nuestro poder de compra en el mercado. La manipulación interna de cifras estadísticas y las distorsiones sobre la realidad exterior por la prensa corporativa, ocultan trampas letales para EU y la comunidad internacional. El apoyo directo e indirecto a la guerra en Syria -antesala de la guerra en Iran-, tiene ya un efecto e inmediato, la suba del precio del gas. Los altibajos en los precios de la gasolina son efecto del intervencionismo USA afuera y si el war-monguerism avanza y la guerra en Iran se desata, los efectos de la guerra serán aun mas desastrosos para la economía nacional. Solo las grandes corporaciones que especulan con el comercio del petróleo y su refinación se benefician del war-monguerism que alienta Obama.
Que felicidad pueden entonces brindar las palabras huecas de Obama sobre same-sex-marriage?. Nada, vivimos la continuación de la debacle que iniciaron los neocons, pero esta vez con una política es aún mas criminal si se agregan los campos de concentración o prisiones clandestinas que se siguen
descubriendo. Mas aun si continua el asesinato de muchos civiles inocentes con los DRONES de Obama.
Todo esto ha minado la credibilidad en este régimen para que nos fiemos
hoy de las retoricas de Obama. Lo que no hay son politicas concretas para detener las guerras abroad que nos averguenzan a todos los americanos (haría bien Obama en devolver el premio nobel de la paz que el ha desecrado, esto es peor que el escandalo de Clinton con la Monica, quien desecro al Federal. El de Obama es un crimen que jamás quedara impune, siempre habrá un Juez en el mundo dispuesto a pedir su captura cuando concluya su mandato. Obama es ya un criminal de guerra que tarde o temprano será sentenciado en cortes internacionales junto a la SS Hilary Clinton por los crimenes en Libya y por los drones en Pakistan y Afganistan donde muchos inocentes civiles perdieron
su vida.
Las parejas del same-sex-marriage jamás podran vivir felices con estas ataduras de conciencia en sus mentes. Basta de exportar muerte y miseria en nombre de la libertad y la democracia, lo que ni siquiera internamente se respeta. Las parejas del mismo sexo que realmente se aman no pueden colocar su amor por encima del amor a toda la humanidad que está siendo aterrorizada por los drones de Obama. Vivimos en un mundo interconectado e inter-dependiente y ningún americano puede vivir con la conciencia tranquila y limpia cuando un gobernante siembra desolación y muerte en nuestro alrededor.
Los LATNOS NO VAMOS A VOTAR POR OBAMA, el racismo que sufrimos ha empeorado y nuestras casas siguen siendo saqueadas por los desalojos que ordenan los
Bancos que Obama apoya y con su política de migración. Los LATINOS EXIGIMOS CAMBIO EN EL SISTEMA ELECTORAL Y REAL CHOICE IN DEMOCRACY. ESO SUPONE UNA 3ra OPCION ELECTORAL. No queremos más al dirty couple en el poder.
Para nosotros los demócratas y republicanos son lo mismo y este matrimonio es inmundo y criminal; es exactamente lo opuesto al noble amor que se pretende defender con la retórica oportunista de Obama. En el same-sex-marriage hay real amor, en el dirty couple de demócratas + republicanos hay solo negociados corruptos y podridos, el de los super-packs para mencionar un caso inmediato. La compra-venta de elecciones por grandes corporaciones es un crimen contra la democracia sancionado como ilegal en la India y varios países europeos. Pero hay muchos mas negocios turbios detrás de los super-packs, se especula que hay lavado de dinero del opio que viene de Afganistán y de carteles de Mexico y Colombia y que en estos arreglos bajo la mesa están Obama y los neo-cons. Eso los convertiría en reales enemigos de la nación americana, si una investigación independiente prueba la hipótesis. Los enemigos de nuestro país no serian entonces los islámicos como alegan los neocons, Obama y los sionistas de Israel, sino las mafias corruptas de grandes corporaciones que operan dentro y fuera del país.
Por esto decimos que la retórica oportunista de Obama es lo mas indecente que puede haber en la política actual, fue el quien avalo los super-paks.
LOS LATINOS TAMPOCO VAMOS A VOTAR POR LOS REPUBLICANOS que nos inundaron con su hipocresía medieval sobre derechos de la mujer, con su war mongerism desenfrenado, su racismo e islamofobia y con sus demencias zionista y fasistoides. Votaremos por RON PAUL pero solo si se aparta de la inmundicia política de los republicanos conservadores (estos están condenados a la derrota por mas dinero que ponga Mit Romney). Votaremos por Ron Paul solo si lidera una ALIANZA POPULAR INDEPENDIENTE CONTRA EL DIRTY CORRUPTED COUPLE.
Lo que importa hoy es cortar las barras de la celda o prisión en la que se mantiene cautivo al electorado americano. Los los partidos que se alternan en el poder y que son financiados por las mismas corporaciones son la prisión o trampa política que hay que romper hoy. Esta seria la mejor herencia política que puede dejar Ron Paul a la historia del sistema americano. Lo posterior puede ser continuado por su hijo u otros tantos líderes dispuestos a generar real democracia independiente de las grandes corporaciones en nuestro país.
Nuestro país reclama urgente la reconstrucción del sistema político y económico. Queremos una democracia orientada al mercado pero con fuerte control civil organizado, con el impuesto Tobin a toda transacción financiera en las bolsas y en Wall street, con un Glas Steagle Act reformado y fuerte, con un nuevo dólar independiente de las mafias banqueras, con consumismo responsable y con apoyo al capital productivo mediano y pequeño. Por esto el neoliberalismo del Washignton consensus debe ser desmontado, el Patriot Act y su Homeland Security también debe ser desactivado y desmontado. Queremos reformas a todo nivel y eso solo será posible si salimos de la trampa del dirty couple.
Si Ron Paul no es capaz de liderar este mov por real democracia independiente de las grandes corporaciones, la tarea quedara pendiente para el futuro mov. popular que seguro forjara en la lucha nuevos líderes. Si Ron Paul traiciona al pueblo y solo nos busca acomodar dentro del GOP, entonces la respuesta sera a. el voto en cada Estado por libertarian y socialistas; b el llamado a LA ABSTENCION ELECTORAL. Pronto lo definiremos y en ambos casos el resultado será una victoria pírrica de Obama, sin poder real como hoy, por tanto,mas continuista, mas ineficaz y aun mas decadente. Total: peor crisis.
Asegurar real felicidad para el same-sex couple supone crear un nuevo contexto político y económico para todos los americanos. Decir que ellos serán felices en el actual contexto es pura retórica hueca, de oportunismo cínico y cobarde.

Lo que importa hoy es cortar las barras de la celda o prisión en la que se mantiene cautivo al electorado americano. Los los partidos que se alternan en el poder y que son financiados por las mismas corporaciones son la prisión o trampa política que hay que romper hoy. Esta seria la mejor herencia política que puede dejar Ron Paul a la historia del sistema americano. Lo posterior puede ser continuado por su hijo u otros tantos líderes dispuestos a generar real democracia independiente de las grandes corporaciones en nuestro país.
Nuestro país reclama urgente la reconstrucción del sistema político y económico. Queremos una democracia orientada al mercado pero con fuerte control civil organizado, con el impuesto Tobin a toda transacción financiera en las bolsas y en Wall street, con un Glas Steagle Act reformado y fuerte, con un nuevo dólar independiente de las mafias banqueras, con consumismo responsable y con apoyo al capital productivo mediano y pequeño. Por esto el neoliberalismo del Washignton consensus debe ser desmontado, el Patriot Act y su Homeland Security también debe ser desactivado y desmontado. Queremos reformas a todo nivel y eso solo será posible si salimos de la trampa del dirty couple.

BEIJING, May 1 (Xinhuanet) -- For the first time in 40 years, seats in the Syrian parliament will be up for grabs by multiple parties in the country’s much-postponed elections, now scheduled for May the 7th.
Previously, only parties that belonged to the National Progressive Front were allowed to stand for election. More than 7,000 candidates from more than eight parties will be competing for 250 seats in parliament.
Streets in Syria are decked with candidates’ election campaign banners and posters, with most of the slogans emphasizing national unity, greater youth participation and peaceful change. Many Syrians believe the upcoming elections can bring vitality to the country and pave the way for reforms.
They also hope new parliamentarians will be more responsive to people’s needs. Others say they’ll go to the polls to show support for strengthening the country.

This quest, as there is less and less to exploit, leads to mounting repression, increased human suffering, a collapse of infrastructure and, finally, collective death. The World Health Organization calculates that one in four people in the United States suffers from chronic anxiety, a mood disorder or depression—which seems to me to be a normal reaction to our march toward collective suicide.
When the most basic elements that sustain life are reduced to a cash product, life has no intrinsic value.
Rebuilding older vision of community, one based on cooperation rather than exploitation, will be as important to our survival as changing our patterns of consumption, growing food locally and ending our dependence on fossil fuels. The deities they worshipped were not outside of or separate from nature.
The demented project of endless capitalist expansion, consumption, senseless exploitation and industrial growth is now imploding. Corporate hustlers are as blind to the ramifications of their self-destructive fury as were Custer, the gold speculators and the railroad magnates. They seized Indian land, killed off its inhabitants, slaughtered the buffalo herds and cut down the forests.
The conflation of technological advancement with human progress leads to self-worship. … Walter Benjamin argued that capitalism is not only a formation “conditioned by religion,” but is an “essentially religious phenomenon,” albeit one that no longer seeks to connect humans with the mysterious forces of life. The recent outcry by the American Media complaining of mass riots over the Russian election has gotten me thinking. Do the youth in Russia protesting understand exactly how free they are compared with the American's slandering them? Consider the facts.
1. AMERICA'S FREE PRESS
Six Corporations control the American press (Walt Disney, General Electric, News Corporation, Viacom, CBS, and Time Warner), whether in print, or on the television. They even used the frequently derogatory term bloggers to refer to free publications that do not follow their talking points. In covering the protest in Russia the supposedly freest press in the world even saw many programs using false footage, such as those from riots taking place in the European Union, and mimicking those of the Occupy and Tea Party movements happening coast to coast in America.
2. AMERICA'S FREE SPEECH
If you think you can say anything you want if you're an American consider the American president recently authorized the assassination of an American citizen who was known for recording tapes and CDs denouncing America's policies as immoral, and oppressive.
3. AMERICA'S FREEDOM OF RELIGION
Frequently in the last several decades children have had to rely on parents taking schools to court to avail themselves of the right to pray; Churches and Mosques are frequently having to show up in court to preserve their rights to call people to prayer, ring bells, or even maintain a cross that happens to be visible from a public highway.
4. AMERICA'S FREEDOM FROM TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION
American's Pay Almost 50% of their income in Taxes, and work the longest hours of any country in the world.
While Americans insist their tax burden is low, once one tallies the taxes on products, housing, transportation, and hidden taxes employers must pay on behalf of employees Americans work 6 months of the year before they see any profit for their labor.
The average American has 2 weeks of paid vacation, and 3 personal or sick days for unexpected absence at work. Many are so afraid of becoming unemployed they do not avail themselves even of these. Expecting mothers in most American jobs are expected to work to within a month of their expected due date and return to work in 6 to 8 weeks. With the effect of so many families where both parents work the prices of American products are such that only if one member of a married couple is independently wealthy it is impossible for them to survive on an income of a single worker. Women are not free to stay home and help raise children, and increasingly many children are raised by daycare workers, and school teachers.
5. AMERICA'S OPEN AND TRANSPARENT COURTS, AND CORRUPTION FREE POLICE
While other nations are changing the terminology of Militia to Police, America is enacting laws to the opposite. More and more anti terrorism legislation is targeting 'special instances' where American Citizens can be denied indefinitely rights to an attorney, and be held without being charged with a crime. Further these special situations call for moving ruling on whether these Americans have committed any crime into Military courts which are not subject to the constitutional protections of traditional American courts.
6. FREE ELECTIONS
International observers are not allowed at American elections, in fact foreigners present at American elections thought to be spying can be charged, and deported and not allowed to return to the United States. Increasingly exit polls conducted on those exiting voting sites in America show disparity with officially reported results; and Americans have little means to investigate why.
The electoral college system in America is legally able to elect whomever they choose for president regardless of whom Americans vote for, and it is legally possible, and has happened recently more than once, for the winning candidate for the presidency to lose the majority vote.
While in regional elections there are sometimes 3 or 4 parties on the ballot who occasionally elect a small number of representatives to local or state governments, on the national level it is nearly impossible for any party other than Democrat or Republican to be on the ballot. In several states laws prevent any other party from even applying regardless of how many people endorse the candidate. In several states write-in candidates, those not officially on the ballot, can only be counted if the candidate has been added to an acceptable list of write ins. Ron Paul, who was not on the Ballot in New York was also not allowed onto the write-in list despite massive support which certainly resulted in numerous write in votes for his name. This would be akin to only votes for United Russia or the Communist Party being counted.
7. FREEDOM TO PROTEST
The police in numerous cities have violently reacted to the Occupy Movements in the United States where protesters angered by the United States Government favoring wealthy corporations over citizens who individually are increasingly making so little money they are statistically included in poverty lists. Old women have been sprayed with gases and physically assaulted by police looking to cover up massive unrest. The United States hasn't used rubber bullets against protesters as Georgian president Sakashvili did multiple times in recent years but with John McCain, former candidate for president, and still Senator, stating on multiple occasions his empathy for the Georgian president how long will it be before the increasingly military-like, replete with more powers and weapons previously only available to the military, police begin using those on protesters as well?
The same media that criticizes Gay Pride parades being barred from central Moscow on the grounds it would be disruptive and unmanageable, are fine with the same excuse being used when protesters from one party show up unannounced at conventions of rival political parties. Protesting outside of 'designated protest areas' distant from these conventions is grounds for arrest.
8. FREEDOM TO KEEP AND BARE ARMS
Americans have a false belief that most nations do not allow individuals to keep arms or use them against those threatening their life or property. Many non-Americans are mistakenly of the belief that any American can walk to the store and buy a cart full of automatic machine guns. The fact is most countries, with the notable exception of the United Kingdom, allow a person to keep weapons for self defense and hunting, the Russian Federation included. In America Americans cannot purchase or for the most part have access to use automatic weapons. While many states allow for Americans to carry concealed pistols, these generally require difficult to acquire permits involving the endorsement of long time acquaintances of those applying. The prevalence of guns in crime stems not from American laws, but from illegal purchases of guns, as it does in other countries. The American government in fact engaged in selling thousands of illegal weapons which officials now confess are likely to be used in crimes for decades in a failed attempt to gather information about narcotics rings, and mafia organizations.
With all of this in mind I'd like those who consider America to be any freer than its neighbors, or even free at all to consider the original Bill of Rights, designed to keep America a 'free country', and whether they are in fact doing so, or whether the American government has simply disregarded them completely.
THE BILL OF RIGHTS (THE FIRST TEN AMENDMENTS TO THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION):
* FIRST AMENDMENT - ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE, FREE EXERCISE CLAUSE; FREEDOM OF SPEECH, OF THE PRESS, AND OF ASSEMBLY; right to petition Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
* SECOND AMENDMENT - MILITIA (UNITED STATES), SOVEREIGN STATE, RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.[56]

* TENTH AMENDMENT - POWERS OF STATES AND PEOPLE. The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
I do not observe these facts out of an interest to dissuade protesters in East Europe, or indeed anywhere else in the world, from pursuing a free and transparent government that protects the interests of those it represents. Instead I ask that they consider what can be the true intentions of those so loudly calling foreign nations un-free. With Time Magazine calling the protestor the 'Person of the Year'; what are they doing to help American's maintain their freedom? Not much. Mean time their parent company, as well as News Corporation, have used on numerous occasions falsified or modified footage to deride other nations as un-free, and oppressed.
What can be more oppressed than a people lied to by their press, over worked, and over taxed, unable to elect representation outside the established two parties, which are of course only one party better than a dictatorship, all the while being told they are the freest nation on Earth?

* THIRD AMENDMENT - PROTECTION FROM QUARTERING OF TROOPS.
No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
* FOURTH AMENDMENT - PROTECTION FROM UNREASONABLE SEARCH AND SEIZURE.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
* FIFTH AMENDMENT - DUE PROCESS, DOUBLE JEOPARDY, SELF-INCRIMINATION, EMINENT DOMAIN.
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
* SIXTH AMENDMENT - TRIAL BY JURY AND RIGHTS OF THE ACCUSED; Confrontation Clause, speedy trial, public trial, right to counsel
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
* SEVENTH AMENDMENT - CIVIL TRIAL BY JURY.
In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.
* EIGHTH AMENDMENT - Prohibition of excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment. Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
* NINTH AMENDMENT - Protection of rights not specifically enumerated in the Constitution. The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
* TENTH AMENDMENT - POWERS OF STATES AND PEOPLE. The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
I do not observe these facts out of an interest to dissuade protesters in East Europe, or indeed anywhere else in the world, from pursuing a free and transparent government that protects the interests of those it represents. Instead I ask that they consider what can be the true intentions of those so loudly calling foreign nations un-free. With Time Magazine calling the protestor the 'Person of the Year'; what are they doing to help American's maintain their freedom? Not much. Mean time their parent company, as well as News Corporation, have used on numerous occasions falsified or modified footage to deride other nations as un-free, and oppressed.
What can be more oppressed than a people lied to by their press, over worked, and over taxed, unable to elect representation outside the established two parties, which are of course only one party better than a dictatorship, all the while being told they are the freest nation on Earth?
